The reality check we all needed

THE Arrogance is coming back according to ratts.
We've done our time in the cellar and it's only
a matter of time before we're back around the mark.

What arrogance mate?? This playing group is so far removed from "those" arrogant teams of the 70-80-90's its not funny!
The slate was wiped clean at Princes Park in 2002,Kouta was the last link to a premiership side and now he's gone!
This team represents fundamental generational change at the Blues.
Opposition supporters branded us arrogant ,but I'll reply with a quote from Muhammad Ali "It aint braggin' if you can do it!"
As for the future,I'm not even putting a ladder position in my mind.I would just like to see the building of a team with a gameplan,a vision, and a way forward out of the darkness.
Whatever we win, we win and whatever we lose,we lose
Go Blues

And another thing, why are people so blinded by "youngest list" stats???
What is the diff. between us and the next 4-6 teams?
I'll tell you, between a few days and six months older statistically.
FA when the teams run on the ground

I have said this a few times. If we can get 10 wins, this will see us finish in the 9th - 12th position, which is a pretty good outcome from where we are coming from, and will give us a good launching pad into 2009.

I'm about here in my expectations to be honest.

That being said, if a few things go our way, it is a slight posibility that we might make the 8... in 8th position and we wouldnt be in the finals for long.

Exactly!!

The fear of optimism and hope amongst most Carlton posters could not be further from the old Carlton arrogance.

Timid is our new arrogant

After we win our next flag in 2k10, then I think that the old arogance will come back. For the next couple of years, while the team gets more experience and we start winning more, the standard feeling for a Carlton supporter will be optimism.

I think that the opposition supporters are just afraid that the club is getting better and they are remembering all the kickings they gave us while we were down and out ;)

I said fear of optimism Dramoth, not optimism!!

That's my whole problem with most Carlton supporters these days, they're scared to think we may just win a game!!!

Fear of optimism and hope, this is what we have been reduced to

Why not get excited? We're at the tail end of this period the club has just gone through, and we have a list full of young guns that have amazing capabilities/potential. Top eight this year, no. Excitement generating around the club and getting behind our boys as much as possible, hell yes.

Exactly. We have every right to get excited about our team this year. We aren't expecting miracles, just improvement from the boys.

Tbh, i think the huge difference will not be Judd, will not be Stevens, will not be anybody we've drafted. I think the huge difference will be Brett Ratten. The fact that the boys respect him, and want to play under him will have a huge impact on our performances.

Brett Ratten's speach on Sunday afternoon at the Family Day was, I think, the reality check we all needed... myself included. We shouldn't be expecting miracles this season. We have officially the youngest list in the AFL and with lack of experience we shouldn't be expecting our team to go too far. Really, if we all have our hopes set on, say, 11th position if Carlton exceed this expectation we will still be happy. If they don't exceed it then they have finished closer to our expectation of 11th then, say, 8th.

We shouldn't be putting so much pressure on our young guys. I do think they will do well this season but one think i can't stand is another season full of disappointment, which is why we should be lowering our expectations.

Thoughts?

I said last year that i didnt think we'd make the 8 (hawthorn) and i'd be satisfied if we didnt just as long as we improved.

We had a super year and now its hard to quell expectation.

You boys god help us will be right amongst it... its a good thing having Vic Clubs up and about and winning :)

But be so cautios and limited with the excitement?

Why must the alleged excitement be immediately qualified with "top eight this year, no." -that's hardly exciting.

At least try, "top 8 this year, who knows? maybe just maybe...?"

That's a classic display of the fear of optimism I'm talking about.

True excitement should not know such limiting and cautious boundaries.

Ratts actually said that in an interview.
Something about the 'arrogance' being back at Carlton.
I don't necessarily think he was referring to the oxford dictionary
definition of arrogant, but perhaps the
'confident, rock solid, no one can beat us' Carlton arrogant.
There's a bit of a difference i guess.
At the end of the day we all just wanna see a really strong
team with confidence and attitude.
The basis of which I can see being built as we speak.
