With a new President and CEO joining the club soon, and with 'old' players like Judd, Carrazzo, McLean (not that' old but plays old), Waite and Scotland (already gone) in the twilight of their careers (Judd and Carrazzo have hardly played all year) I think it's fair to say the club is at the cross roads.

I think it's pretty obvious Malthouse will be tasked with rebuilding the list, and thank God he is the because he has proven he knows how to build lists.

Whether his game plan stacks up we won't know until he gets the right cattle . Right now the list is going through a transformation with the old players hitting the wall and kids like Buckley, Menzel, Docerty coming through.

With free agency , Gibbs not yet signed (could land an early pick), and some old players nearing the end, it is really is an interesting time for the club. The draft is supposed to be strong so I really hope the club make the most of the draft and the opportunity to replenish the list what with old players vacating ther posts soon.

It's not all doom and gloom because Port Adel showed you can turn it around quickly if you bring good players to the club and rebuild the midfield through the draft and shrewd trades.

I guess the concern is whether the club, who have been and still appear to be to some extent stuck in the dark ages, will rebuild the smart, modern way. Hopefully they won't think one player (another Judd) will be the savior. Hopefully they won't trade picks away. Hopefully they recognize midfield is the key in modern football. Hopefully they relies depth is more important than a $1M player. Obviously a balance needs to be struck and one could argue our midfield needs a player like Dangerfield and our spine needs a Frawley. I guess free agency is a wonderful thing in that regard.

Personally I hope they can cash in their older players, and use any cap space savings to bring in some free agency talent, and then cross our fingers our new recruitment manager does well in the draft. We will certainly have one high pick.

I'm torn on Gibbs. I understand he is nearly across the line but until the deal is signed sealed and delivered nothing is certain especially with a new President and CEO coming soon. I agree with Mick who said we need big bodied midfielders like Bryce. But I think everyone agrees now zbryce is not an elite talent and mightn't have a lot of improvement left in him so I do wonder if we are better off letting him go and getting another high quality kid with a high comp pick we get for letting Bryce go. Not too fussed either way as the flip side is we do lack depth and Bryce at least provides us with a good if not great midfielder. We have enough of a base to build on so getting a high pick for Bryce is not necessarily a necessity. I can see both sides to this coin.

It's certainly a critical time for the club though. Time to rebuild to some extent. Let's hope the new President, CEO and recruitment manager don't stuff it up.

Gibbs is at least staying in Victoria. His partner posted a picture of their new place saying she couldn't wait to use the kitchen. They're not going anywhere.

Just waiting for the board to tick off on deal.

We need to stop using Gibbs in hypothetical trades/free agent moves etc. It's not happening. He's staying.

He could be moved to another Victorian club though ??

Why trade Gibbs?

We need more class not less.
Shame Bryce didn't play last night. With Murphy getting the hard tag like Judd, he should be braining them like Murphy did three years ago. Arguably the main reason we're not a top eight side and consistent. Yarran is showing him up with his consistency, defensive side and tackling. Gibbs nails a tackle after jogging in quicksand in an earlier contest. Yet he deserves a bigger bake than Waite after he gave a free and "decapitated" O'Brien with a poor tackle.

Easier to say Kreuzer, Robinson, Mclean, Garlett and Lucas need to go. :straining:

Yet Kreuzer and Robinson only know how to play one way. Flat out.

Mclean still puts in the effort,

I actually thought Gibb's should have gotten the high fend off free for the O'brien tackle.

No doubt that Gibb's needs to lift again but he has been great in recent games.

Never suggested that we trade Kreuzer. Robbo only had 12 touches though and shows why our 2nd stringers need to be moved on or replaced.

Murphy is a jet - he is fast and is learning to break hard tags using his speed - Gibbs doesn't have to be and never will be hard tagged - he is a relatively slow runner- who has always used his brain and footskills to compensate. It isn't an accident that Ratten played Gibbs as a defensive smart rebound kick capable HBF - he could also play as a defensive HFF because he is a great kick. Bell/Cripps/Curnow will develop into much better inside mids - Bell and Curnow have huge tanks and speed to go with size.

Reckon we should use Gibbs as a Hodge type utility. Play him back when needed and put him in the midfield when he has a favourable match up.

Gibbs is still our 2nd best midfielder. Why would we trade?

If he went via Free Agency, we would get a very good first round pick for him in a draft chock full of gun key position players.

We need KPP more than we need Gibbs if we are going to progress our list to something capable of challenging the Top 4.

Gibbs is a big part of the future. would not trade for near on any reason unless it landed us one of the top 3 key forwards in the league. and lets face it that isn't happening. I would be sending some guys in for surgery over the next 3 -4 weeks and looking for a top 4 draft pick. Been very impressed with our recruitment the last 2 years so get the list fit and ready for next year and beyond and trust in Mick and Co.

Is that well documented 3 year deal already up?!

Everything's coming up Malthouse!
Yep this is the final year.

There was an article a couple weeks back saying he wants to play on but I'm not fussed anymore.

Need to recycle the older players but keep the required senior leaders.

Jarrad on his day is an exceptional footballer and sadly we have very little coming up to replace him so he doesn't have any real competition for his spot.

Duigan, Carrazzo, Scotland will in my opinion be certainties to leave at year's end (Carrazzo maybe on the rookie list like Scotto?). Really hope Judd stays another year in case we finally put it together in 2015. Get the feeling Ellard will be traded along with Armfield too. Two of Bootsma, Watson and McInnes in line too.
