If you get the basics in place these things can turn around really fast.

FWIW I think we started to do this around 2006/7 and were really well placed cica 2010. We then extended contracts for fringe players that should have been moved on and reverted to short-term measures like Brock. (I can see the logic in getting him though)

We're not coming from as far back this time.... won't take as long

The clean out last year and the one that is coming this year will allow us to come back a lot quicker. We just need to clear out the monied up powerbrokers who will constantly drag us back to the quick fix era and then we can move forward again. Bringing in Ratts in 2k6/7 was more about bringing pride back to the club and getting the players playing for the coach again. Then they started to get too comfortable with things and we started to slack off again.

We need a constant injection of hunger or else people are going to get sated with the way things are and will take it easy.

You might say that Chapman was moved on by the Cats because they doubted his hamstrings etc, but I think some of it was managing the age cohorts within their list. Chapman's performance arcs were dipping in terms of consistency, (his best was still excellent), but he wasn't going to be able to contribute at a high level on a regular basis going forward. I think the Cats made the call to ensure that they had sufficient list rotation and players coming through at various ages and stages of development to minimise performance downturn.

It's a great example of how to manage a list to ensure renewal.

Continue to build the list. Continue to bring in talent. Continue to identify areas of development.

Our day will come if we stay strong and patient and continue to support our lads. After all, if we throw in the towel, then why shouldn't they?

Yarran was our "weapon", Buckley was exciting, Menzel was impactful. Youth is definitely the answer, whether you call it a rebuild or not. We should aim to re-tool significantly and surge again probably late in Murphy's career. It will not be Waite, Judd, Carrazzo, Simpson that take us forward. They cannot improve.

But Bell, Cripps, Curnow, Menzel, Buckley, Yarran, Henderson, etc can!
