Lucas has shown enough since he has been back that he really should be a regular in our 22 for the majority of the season.
Just the coolness under pressure to get that handball to Bucks was clinical.

Sure he has aspects of his game he needs to work on, but it's baby steps with Kane in the short term.
Thats the thing... he has come from a long way back and appears to be making some good steps to becoming, while not an elite level player, a very good one. We recognised that in his first few games at the club and we all thought he had a very bright future and then he got injured and things went a fair bit pear shaped for him.

One thing that I do know... if WCE or Freo come knocking for him after the end of this season, they will have to pay a bit more than what they offered a couple of years ago!

Why has he been a fringe player his whole career then? He did get poorly managed in his early years, but he's been around for some time now.

He does have certain deficiencies to his game, there's no doubt about that. However I certainly can't agree that one of those areas is workload, for the reasons I stipulated above.

Lucas looked great early in his career but some pretty significant injuries cut him down quickly. Over the past few years he's really struggled to get over them & has, in effect, had to completely change his running technique which isn't an easy thing to do and takes time to establish and get used to.

That would explain the inability to cement his spot in the senior side. What started as a difficult task was made nigh on impossible at the time.

He now appears to be over those injuries and is being afforded some continuity in his game. You can't improve if you don't have that, and now that he does, the improvement in his game is clear. In particular, his strength and tackling look to have improved significantly on what we saw from him last season.

Kane has had a tough few years but the kid can play. Some have already lost hope but I won't be writing him off just yet.

I acknowledge that he has had injuries and struggled over the years, but from what I've seen, it has been his work ethic on-field. I can't really think of a game where we were struggling in the last and his fitness and running really lifted us. I understand he is one of the best runners at the club but that doesn't always translate to on-field. I think his tackling in the past is a reflection of this. Tackling isn't about strength - it's about determination and willing to throw yourself in harms way. It's good to see he has fixed this - which suggests (to me) he has boosted his work rate.

I never wrote him off, and I'm still not writing him off. I completely agree he deserves a good run at it. I think Mick rates him and he will get the best out of him.

Can definitely play - just hoping the past few weeks haven't been a tease.

Definitely has loads of ability.

I take it you missed most of the last quarter against the Doggies where Lucas appeared to be involved in everything?

But yeah, I think that Mick is getting the best out of him... Mick along with Buttifant seems to be getting a bit more out of most of the guys in terms of willingness to throw themselves in.

In the last 2 weeks we have seen both Lucas and Tuohy throwing themselves into marking contests where they knew they were going to get smashed, but went in anyway.

In the past means prior to this year.

We all know about his performances this year, especially the past 2 weeks.

Pretty safe to say that prior to this year, he has been disappointing.

Last year he wasnt to bad, but just didnt have the confidence in his body that would allow him to attack the ball and the player the way he has been so far in the last couple of games. It's good to see him start getting back to his first season form with us where he wouldnt second guess himself and he would take the game on. 2 years of mismanaged injuries and having his coach lose faith in him almost wrecked his career at the blues.

I personally think that it's great the way that he is slotting into the side nicely even though we already have 2 other players in the side who can play in the same positions and take on the same roles as him.

Lucas continuing to improve will have a big impact on our team I recon.

A mid who can spread from contests and is a pretty good kick. His tackling has improved thank god.

Need him to stand up to give our midfield some serious depth. I can see him being a bit of a Sidebottom type, that mobile and skilled player who complements the big guns of the midfield like Murphy, Gibbs and Thomas. Hopefully he becomes more consistent than Sidebottom though.

Unlike Rosa, I think Lucas is capable of some super high-skilled stuff that make you go "wow, not many in our team could pull that off". He has vastly improved his effectiveness in games (still has to keep working hard though) and is getting some consistency too. By the end of the year I reckon there's a good chance he will have won everyone over and become a lock.

And Lucas has a knack of drifting forward and kicking goals.

I want to see

Lucas, Menzel, Docherty and Buckley in the best 22 by seasons end

Replacing the likes off
Scotland, Robinson, Ellard, McLean etc

Docherty - Scotland
Menzel - Ellard
Buckley pushes Simpson up to the midfield.
Curnow - Carazzo although both can play in the midfield due to Curnow finding another yard of pace from somewhere.

Log jam with Cripps, Graham, Lucas, Cachia, Holman competing with Mclean and Robbo for spots.

Just need some quality KPP's coming through and another classy mid or two.

His kicking has improved dramatically over the last two weeks. Confidence? He's been taking the first and best option too.
And the best bit... he will actually correctly assess an option and take the best when disposing of the ball. In that passage of play that lead to Buckley scoring the equaliser he had a couple of other options, but spotted Buckley unmarked and used him.

A couple of our other 'foot soldiers' would have just taken the first option and put them under the pump and we would have equalised at that point and turned the game completely.
