The 'Recruit'

I understand people seeing Waylen's defeatist attitude, but I felt that in a short time with Voss' he was getting better. He did not blame others and was a team player. The guy just needs a father type person behind.

Rookie list is for projects and insurances like Hudson for Collingwood last year.

Went and watched Gossy play today and wouldn't have touched it more than 5 times, was very dissapointed in his performance. Makes me think about the standard of all 'the recruit' players if Gossy is meant to be one of the best.

In his defence, he is playing injured in attempt to get his team to finals. And i don't think any forward for Xavier would have done well today.

Be reminded he kicked 80 in the comp last year. Can afford a bad day.

given there is only a handful of players left, which other players complete the team when they play a game of footy?

how much actual football development do vossy and co actually put into these guys? 90% of the show seems based around other non-football related activities.

this show had so much potential but has failed big time

i reckon it would be great to have an indigenous academy at each club.guys from remote areas who can be nurtured like international rookies. Not on the main list, maybe 3 per team.

There should be a Sydney style academy for the Kimberley and Pilbara. Plenty of talent up there but very few people are drafted from north of Geraldton

King Eddie has picked who he wants for Collingwood next year already. He's planned who he wants eliminated in each episode, leaving his choice the clear 'star' ready to draft to the Collingwood Football Club. Well done Eddie.

Disagree, that's a western attitude only.

If Waylen can kick goals, lay tackles, follow the gameplan and have his teammates believe in him (ie. he's accepted), then he should try and do all those things but should not be banished if his mentality restricts him because he thinks they're stupid and pointless.

However, I doubt he thinks gymming is pointless, since there's a direct cause and effect with your performance on the field.

Hypothetically, if we found out that Gary Ablett wanted to be treated differently from the group due to cultural worldview and said he wanted to eat McDonalds every week, but kept up his form, what do you do? The only risk is for less talented teammates to follow suit... But what if they are accepting of him being different to them? We're taught to 'treat everybody the same' but what if they're not the same?

It's challenging, but at the moment I think AFL people oversimplify it by expecting indigenous players to conform to a western city culture way of living rather than allowing them to integrate.

I think you're underplaying the elite athlete component of being an AFL player. I guess it is a type of 'western city culture' - after all, AFL players have to live in western cities. But it's mostly about training at a level that allows you to play at your best, or at the very least at the level where you're competitive. It's not the 1970's anymore, you can't just get away with rocking up on pure talent and having that get you through a season. It's about running until you vomit, playing and training through pain and doing a shitload of things you don't want to do. Waylen isn't so special that he can avoid doing that stuff and expect to get a kick. He just won't be able to kick goals, lay tackles and follow the gameplan if he doesn't do all that other stuff - and it's a lot harder than paddling on a board.

Late in a game, scores are tied and your opponent gets the ball in the centre. You're a couple of metres behind and absolutely knackered - you can't run any more. But if you don't catch him, your team loses the game. What do you do? Play the culture card?

That's why it's a lot more complex than simply saying it's a western attitude issue. It's not.

Sad to to see Waylan go,liked him first time I seen him so much up side.
This Maxwell bloke looks a goer good to see clubs are looking at small basketball types insteed of tall project ex basketball ruckmen types. We have a small ex basketbeller on the rookie list from all reports hes picking it pretty well.

Not sure if srs

AFL
The 18 club recruiters have been told the winner of #TheRecruit will have the power to choose which club he plays for.
25/08/2014 12:05 pm

Recruit - I choose Adelaide!

Crows - We don't want you.

Recruit - Ok then Port

Power - Pass

Recruit - How about the Swans then?

Swans - Keep going

etc...etc...

It will look very suspect if he chooses Collingwood.

Category B rookies have always been able to choose their club haven't they? It's just a bit suspect in this case given these guys mostly aren't international or other sport prospects but guys who have played a decent level of footy then been coached up by AFL system people.

Also I don't understand why the recruiters vote 3-2-1 then pick if they want to draft they guy. They should say if they want to draft any of them first then vote.

I'm still thinking Wagner will win, and being a South Australian my pick is he signs with Port after working with Burgess. They do have a tough team and touch forward line to break in to but a medium forward could actually complement the talls and smalls they have.

So basically a club puts it's hand up if it wants the winner and if a few clubs do as well, then the winner can pick?

I don't think it's fair if the AFL just dump a bloke on your list that you don't want.

That has to be in the context of the player making his own choice of clubs that want him, not that he can lob at any club he wants

I.e. nit subject to a bidding or draft process
But who wouldn't want him? Maybe Sydney if they are absolutely right on the salary cap they might not be able to get the 50k wage in. But for most other teams if they have the money and salary cap why wouldn't you take a free player (list wise). They've been trained up in AFL standards and are likely fitter and just as skilled as most 18 year old rookies so it's not like they'll be a huge drain on coaching or development costs. Nothing wrong with free pubicity either.

But is it fair a guy can just choose his club where the only other people who can usually do that are free agents or international/sporting converts.

Usually with category B rookies the clubs have to go and find the players and take the risk on them. Geelong had to find Blicavs (although Cam Guthrie's dad found him for them). Carlton have to search through Ireland to find good Irish prospects.

In this case the TV show has done all the work finding, evaluating and developing the talent and then a club gets a free player based on what they can offer him. It might've been fairer to award him to the lowest finishing club on the ladder who wanted him.

Clubs will vote 3-2-1 in a secret ballot before the winner turns the tables in the AFL-sanctioned draft — and The Recruit’s AFL Category B rookie contract won’t cost his team a draft pick.

After the winner is chosen, all clubs must decide to “draft” or “pass” and those wanting the player will form the pool of clubs he can choose from.

Most likely only a couple of clubs will be interested anyone so not sure how else you could decide which club gets the player.

I don't see any issue with 'the recruit' picking which club he wants to go to and also the club not accepting the player in question.

The club that does get picked, pretty much gets an additional player for free on their list compared to the other 17 teams. It wouldn't surprise me too if 'the recruit' wages were covered by AFL and not by the club. Similar to the whole Karmichael Hunt/Izzy Folau wage situation, the AFL will justify the wages paid as a marketing expense even acknowledging that ' the recruit' would only be on the basic rookie wage.
