Nah Chris Moreland is a better prospect then Maxwell, couple of reasons. 1. His one year younger. 2. His a better player. 3. He knows the game and already skilled and developed.

Maxwell is well behind the 8 ball giving his age and knowledge of the game.

Tell that to Myke Pyke who didn't even grow up with the sport in his country. Better still, Dean Brogan played high level basketball and made the switch to play in a premiership.

I honestly reckon 90% of players in the AFL would have beaten them and given most of them don't have stand out natural ability, I reckon it's fair to say they were pretty poor.
Have you ever done surf lifesaving? Board paddling is one of the most taxing parts of an ironman, and kneeing on the board to paddle is a skill that takes a while to develop.

An Irishmen, a basketballer and a footballer walk into a bottom 3, the footballer gets delisted.
Because Jackel has no outstanding traits that would see him have a long AFL career. Exactly what midfield would he crack? His skills seem to be a major letdown.

The other two are younger, more athletic have far more scope for improvement. Jackel will be a local footy star, but isn't cut out for AFL.

If Kane Lucas was on The Recruit he'd have been delisted in the first week. However, how does Padraig still manage to scrape through over proper footballers?

I can't believe we have an irishman, a former basketballer (albeit a very likely type), a top level volleyballer ahead of genuine country football stars. Bemusing really

Don't really see the point in the players versing Shane Warne's all star team? If these guys are supposed to be challenging for a spot in a AFL teams best 22 surely they will just beat up on them like the previous games.

TV Ratings.

Just started watching this show tonight and it's entertaining despite having a few problems.

1. They shouldn't have included anyone over 24. It's just unrealistic that any AFL club would be interested in someone that age. AFAIK Podisadly is literally the only person in history to be drafted after age 24. Semmel and Jackal are very good players but are no chance. Rhys Maxwell is probably the best prospect on the show but at 25, even he will struggle.

2. Not enough actual footy.

3. International recruits should be on a separate show, they are just a distraction. 2-3 years away.

But anyway it is pretty clear that Johann Wagner and Maxwell are the 2 best prospects now that Waylan has gone, but given Maxwell's age, Wagner has to be the obvious favourite.

Nailed it really.

Sam Dwyer, Brett Goodes

Ben Hudson was 25 when we recruited him I'm fairly sure

Genuine country footy stars don't necessarily have the traits that will help them succeed at AFL level. Plenty of dominant local footballers like Jackel have been drafted over the years (normally a bit younger too), but rarely last longer than their initial contract.

Why would Jackel succeed at AFL level?

Some do have the traits to succeed though but don't get the opportunity to display them. Played a lot of country footy against Josh Jenkins. The kid dominated our league but was not on an AFL radar until a mate sent a DVD of some of his highlights in to a show Hutchy had re: country footy. Liam Pickering picked it up and forwarded to clubs.

Maxwell is 23. And also, Podsiadly, Brett Goodes and Stephenson I'm pretty sure are the only players to be drafted over age 24. And the last two only had one season worth playing.

There are others than just those 3 that have been drafted over 24.

Yeah a few have been pointed out like Dwyer and Callinan. I was wrong.

Updated power rankings

1. Wagner - but a slight chink in his armour with this back injury news
2. Goss
3. Maxwell - poor game but still a likely type with his coachablity
4. Moreland - seems to be the most polished of the country footballers
5. Foster - lacks physicality and athleticism looks only good not great. With the right physical approach he could be Mike Pyke, with the off the charts athleticism he could be Stef Martin, it seems at the moment he is neither
6. Semmel -age still a big worry if he's not a clear class above
7. Padraig - just doesn't seem to want it enough

Which is exactly why there's such an emphasis on athletes rather than footballers. Most footballers that age have been within the system. It's the guys from outside the system that might provide value.

Regardless, there are plenty of players above 24 running around in state leagues that would be competent AFL players. They're just not seen to have enough upside to warrant drafting.

Semi-competent. Like a lot mentioned already in this thread - Sam Dwyer, Dickson, Gordon, Goodes, Terlich, Hutchings, Howlett - guys who only fill the bottom few spots in the team.

The Barlow's are few and far between. There are some good role players like Lee Spurr and Baguley. Hibberd has some class, Zorko. I'm trying to think how many late picks ups are actually classy top line players.
