Interesting. He looked hopeless a month ago but then it seemed he flicked the switch.
The power of editing.

He was always dominant, which was why he was barely shown during the first few episodes he appeared on. Despite being 'reality TV', it's scripted. Padraig was always going to be drafted, but the narrowminded Australian public wouldn't like an Irishman to be recruited before three Aussies, hence his departure.

Good on Geelong for picking him up - he's a beast of a player.

Have you actually seen him play other than on the show? and if so, at what level?

If he was so dominant then why would the other contestants vote for him to leave?

Anyone who watches the show - could you please shed some light on Padraig.

How was did he stack up against the other contenders in the show? What are his attributes?

Thanks
He joined the show late. Was cast as the fat (comparatively), lazy and dumb Irish 204cm bloke. But then they got in to some non footy challenges and he really lifted his work rate and showed he was a competitor.

They never showed much of his actual football ability. They showed a bad turnover kick but we never got a long look at his kicking to see just how good/bad it is. He took a few marks and they mainly showed him rucking against Bradie, the 204cm queenslander who had played a years footy up there. They split the contests.

Pretty much you are getting a 204cm 21 year old who has some athleticism (but unlikely to be a standout) and has a real go competing. Good sized frame on him as well. Once he's had a couple of preseasons I think he'll be solid without being cumbersome.

I should probably clarify. He was dominant in his native sport, but from what I've heard from contestants in interviews, as well as those involved in the show, those skills translated well into AFL football.

As mentioned by contestants in the show each week, as the show went on, the voting was less about who wasn't as strong a competitor, but more about who's more of a threat. I guess the same reasoning people use on Survivor, Big Brother, and other reality shows like that. Subjective response though, feel free to make up your own reason!

No more or less than the big american you guys picked up.

If your clubs has the money why wouldn't you always have at least one category B rookie on your list?

Our big American 211cm and very athletic. Padraic is 204cm and only slightly athletic.

This thread has been magic for bringing out all the internet warrior buffoons, and making a mockery of them.
Good luck to Padraig and any of the guys on the show who get a chance no matter how slim.
I know there are a couple of others too who have had discussions about rookie spots.
I actually met Padraig a couple of weeks ago and he had a flight home looming and was not overly keen so he would be thrilled with this opportunity.

Padraig sounds like a waste of time

As I understand it, Blicavs will have to come off the category B list this year (not before time) and we still have Michael Luxford (former Aus basketballer, but mid/small forward size) as a cat. B. So essentially, it's us taking a punt on Lucey, finding another rookie from a non-Australian Rules background, or having one less player on the list. At his age, I think he's an intriguing prospect.

Does make a bit of a mockery of the show though, since the winner is unlikely to get anything better than the guy who finished fourth or fifth. It was always going to be the case though.

Geelong has signed Irishman Padraig Lucey, from Fox 8's 'The Recruit' on a two year deal. Not entirely shocked that someone has taken a punt but I didn't think he was that good, from what was shown on TV. Thoughts?

EDIT: Whoops. Turns out the Recruit thread is already discussing this. Mods, do as you please.

has a lot of upside as he is new to the game. in an environment like geelong its a worthwhile punt.

The same is true of all reality talent shows nowadays. There is always more than 1 person deserving when you cast such a wide net. Quite a few people have got record contracts from the musical shows despite not winning too.

I'm really happy with this signing. The ruck has been a massive problem in September in each of the past two years, but that's because Simpson and McIntosh have not been available. So it's pointless to get a ruckman that's about as good as they are, is middle-aged by AFL standards and will be expecting to play AFL week-in/week-out, then have two of your three 'pretty good' AFL rucks running around in the VFL, if they're all healthy. It would be a waste of a list spot and probably a waste of money.

What Geelong needs is a young, cheap, big and reasonably athletic ruckman, that will be quite content rolling round in the VFL for a couple of years, but potentially has the scope to play in the seniors in that time and could then go to another level by around 2017. It would be a very steep learning curve (doesn't sound like he even played for Heidelberg), but would be worthwhile for him to get a taste of it in the NAB games next year.

That's true. At least, in this case, it's still entertaining to watch (it is literally the only reality show I've watched consistently in years) and the motives for going on are pretty pure (i.e. more than 'I want to be famous and this is the easiest way').

How many ruckmen do you have now?
Simpson, McIntosh, Blicavs, Vardy and now Padraig?
