The official quote was "I would not recruit a Aboriginal player unless one of his parents is white".

In no way is this comment acceptable and cannot be associated with the AFC in anyway.

If he said, "the transition of aboriginal players from very remote areas to an AFL club is a difficult task to undertake" then I believe this would have been acceptable.

I think Rendell likes to play on his reputation of being a straight shooter, but there is a time and place - in a work meeting where you're representing your employer ain't it.

This thread is not a vessel for posters to argue with each other about what constitutes racism and what doesn't, or what should or should not be acceptable. That debate cannot possibly end well.

As to Rendell, this is a very disappointing day for the club. Professionally, he is a big loss. I'd really like to hear his side of the story before making my judgement, but that direct quote reads very poorly. If (and I stress, if) it reflects his opinion, then he was not the right person to stay on as recruiting manager anyway.

Just a disappointing incident all round. The Crows had no choice though - the AFL was going to make an example Rendell anyway, rightly or wrongly.


I'm sure Ogilve will do a fine job stepping up to the plate, but I wonder if we're looking long-term for the eventual replacement for the top job, or if we're just going to leave Ogilve there and find a new underling?

I still believe he was taken out of context as he's had no problems drafting indigenous players before. I have had a few conversations with him in the past and he really is a great guy, but is an open book. This is what got him in trouble.

Interesting how Jurrah can Machete someone's face and get support from the AFL and Melboure FC, but Rendell says one thing that is probably a reasonable point but poorly articulated (in a "private conversation") and he immediately gets the sack (or would have if he didn't jump first).

I'm sure he meant the extreme example like Jurrah who come from very remote communities and wouldn't know the first thing about our city culture let alone learning about nutrition, team meetings, curfews, press conferences, school visits etc. Where as if they had at least one parent who has been exposed to these things the chances of the player being exposed to it and his ability to cope would be increased.

Surely common sense says if the kid has come from some remote place in the bush where there is no infrastructure, no rules, no guidelines and no structure it is too big an adjustment. Look at Jurrah. It hasn't worked. He's still mixed up in the 'rules of the land' (tribal war) which is a totally different set of rules.

Common sense, but you just can't say it.

We don't have even close to the full facts here. We can't make a fair adjudication of Rendell's actions yet, let alone the AFL's actions.

If the facts are as presented so far, then Demetriuo had absolutely no choice but to take action.

Not sure if that meant though that there was any thought of a blanket 'let's not recruit white kids from Bonbeach' though...

If recruiters are going to play the percentages, as you say, then by completely ruling out indigenous kids without a white parent, just because, is complete nonsense and in the long term completely detrimental.....

I think everyone knows what he was trying to imply, it's just the way he said it makes it look so bad. Disappointing as he was doing a pretty good job. He should've kept his trap shut (not the Matt Rendell way though) or worded it differently. Unfortunately his honesty/straight shooting has cost him his job and will probably effect his future employment aspirations.

Yes had to go ......the meeting was on a sensitive issue given recent Jurrah events and trends in issues. It required a sensitive response not an honest response.

That said, MR makes a racist remark and is sacked ..... a player makes a racist comments and he goes to mediation

Me thinks double standards

January correct but the sensitivity level went up a level after Jurrah and what the league believes the fall out may be .......Wonamerri, Krakouer, Milera ...

The meeting supposedly took place in January. Which begs the question of why this has just surfaced now.

Supposedly it took a couple of weeks to get "the facts straight". Not sure how it could have taken that long when it was simply one person's word against another, or why it took over a month for the "getting the facts straight" process to occur.

Does seem a bit odd, that's for sure. Still, as much as it's an inconvenient time for the club, it's better now than round 1, I guess.

2) disgraceful conduct by Misfud to ask for feedback on a particular issue because they have concerns about what going on, to then dob them in and leak info from a private official AFL meeting

3) good luck getting Clubs to honestly discuss why there are changes in recruiting now without fear of being hung out to dry

4) Clearly inspired by Jurrah, Taylor, Wonna, Sampi, Rioli and all the other examples lately, in a risk business you can't be surprised that they weigh up all risks, regardless of how unsavoury it may be. Don't ask Don't tell will be the next AFL mandate.

5) What would the AFL have done if he said 'I don't recruit Irish kids because in 25 years they've all been shit bar 2 and its an expensive waste of time'?

6) he did the right thing and resigned, so the CLub weren't forced to sack him but if I were Triggy privately I'd be taking a sledgehammer to Vlad for making it a story. They could have handled it behind closed doors, now the AFL have a PR nightmare cos they know that a number of Clubs are expressing concern.

I agree with comments but the meeting wasn't private ....it was an official AFL meeting to investigate club attitudes to recruiting ........MR should have realised he WAS NOT just speaking to an old mate

Rendell makes an honest comment to some dude (i.e. not public, not to the media, just to a bloke he thinks might be interested in the opinion).

That dude goes and makes it public, and the shitstorm begins.

Rendell is forced to resign, and idiots on here label him a racist... for making an honest comment in private which is not actually racist.

If the above is all true, then I reiterate my thesis that this country is slowly losing it.
