Redman ‘lightly knees’ Ryan in ribs while Ryan is on the ground.
Ryan gets up, remonstrated and then flips Redman the bird.

To date Redman has been fined $1000.

Be interesting to compare sanctions if applied to both parties.

Did anyone else notice the umpire who paid the 50m penalty against Ryan gave him a dressing down complete with finger pointing/wagging afterwards? Pretty sure the AFL take a dim view of players pointing at an umpire, surely the same applies to the reverse situation. Can't say I've ever seen it happen before which makes me wonder why Ryan was singled out.

Ryan's a repeat offender with the pointing, just needs to cut it out.

It's dumb, you can wave like a lunatic, swear generally (just not at the umpire) and plead like a toddler, but you can't point. And rightly or wrongly it's cost us a 50m penalty both times.

The issue was the umpires response to Ryan, not the validity of the 50m.

Umpires can not ignore the demonstrative visual as all can see it. I thought the free was dodgy but its one game i will never watch again so I am not reviewing it

I understood your point, I just don't think it matters. Umpires can be condescending and paternalistic at the best of times.

Insinuating it's a race thing is a massive stretch. I think the umpire was probably annoyed at Ryan who can arc up at the umpires, was having a mare, became over demonstrative and the umpire responded in kind.

In which case he should have given himself a 50m penalty. He was just like Ryan so should be penalised. I also don't think its too much of a stretch to imply racism given the unusual nature of his response. Subconsciously, or otherwise, it was a questionable response.
