The Rest

Is there a reason so many are against the idea of resting players?

I mean, the club is clearly of the belief that it's important. They just call it "management"

We have the oldest list in the comp, it makes sense to rest some of those players where we can
Yes.
More than one.

These are professional athletes trained for the job. Let them do their job. I want the best most capable team out every week that is set to win. I don’t want to flirt with form.

The other reason is that so many rest suggestions are actually based around wanting to fit in a rookie or favoured project player and are put forward to support that agenda.

It’s inane and makes for a boring repetitive thread.

Let the professionals do professional things. We are in very good hands right now.

But managing players is a part of the entire approach no?

We also want our older players in good nick for the most important time of the year

To play devil’s advocate, I would argue that a very strictly system driven team would be first in line to manage/rest players because they truly believe in their system

The North game has already proven that. Our system is as near to selection proof as you can get which means we have a unique opportunity that most clubs (bar probably Geelong) don’t.

So why not give someone like Checkers - who gets battered every week, a bit more of a rest to let his body rest up

Not entirely against resting if a player is genuinely sore, though post bye I'd prefer to play the best team possible to keep banking the wins.

Feels strange to say given we're 11-2, though we're yet to have continuity with our best 23 with McStay, Maynard, JDG, Schulz and Moore all missing a few games.

In a perfect world, I'd love our season to pan out like 2023. Bank the wins, lock in a top 2 spot and then go into preservation mode for the last 2-3 games of the season. Using round 24 against Melbourne as a nice confidence boost going into finals (similar to Essendon in 2023).

Having a look at the draw for the next month and the likely results of all the matches, we should have Top 4 locked in after the Gold Coast Round (even if we lose to them)

We really need to keep pushing until we nail top 2.

Obviously?

I'm just saying that for the more immediate future, Top 4 can get locked away.

The next step would obviously be Top 2

Not much of what you said counters the argument for rest

Hang on.
This is a recovery from injury. He’s not fit.

We’ve all seen Checkers play through pain and adversity. He can do it. He’s trained to do it. He wants to do it.
If he can perform to a standard that makes him best 23, he should play.
If that means his longer term prognosis is jeopardised or he won’t be able to contribute, that’s not rest. That’s recovery from injury.

And what I take umbrage with are the inane suggestions to rest players who don’t require it, especially when it’s presented as a sound basis for including a fan favourite or prospect who our selectors deem to not yet be starting 23 ready.

Injuries, match ups and suspensions will play their part and provide opportunities.
Mitchell’s plight made way for Long.

I want to see West play as well. It excites me.

But I want him, and the team, set up for success. I want him playing:
a) when he’s ready
B) when he’s starting 22 worthy
C) when it contributes to winning the game.

We’re contending, not rebuilding.

Fact is selection does need to consider the balance between here and now and the future.
Fact is Collingwood basically win 3 more games it's the premiership
And have 11 weeks to.prepare accordingly.
So yes everyone in the best 23 should be getting a rest.
Daicos × 2 pendles side b Cameron Elliot Hill Houston Moore Maynard and all the important players should only play 3 of the next 6.
Absolutely no need for anyone to be carrying a niggle in September.
In fact I'd consider a mini pre season for maybe the top 5-8 players.
Send them to.qld or Darwin for heat training away from the cold to get them super fit for September.
Play them the last 4 games to have them.ready in peak form for finals.

Three more games? We need to secure top 2 which means winning 18 games plus. That’s seven more wins.

Huh?

16 wins = top 2 in 2024, 2022, 2019 and 2018. In 2023 and 2021 that was 17.

It seems that Run n Spread was referring to Fly's messaging. 14 wins essentially guarantees a finals campaign. From that milestone, work towards locking in top 4.

The best way to stay football fit is to play continuously. If you gave them a mini pre season, they would be super fit but not match fit.

I want to be sure of top 2. Keep banking wins until it’s guaranteed. We will need to rest players between the Brisbane and Hawthorn game given the five day break.

Clayton Oliver example #1. Was spoken about being super fit in preseason and trained the house down.

Come round 1, he looked like a plodder.

2023 should be the blueprint. We kept winning until we essentially had top 2 sewn up and then we went into heavy training blocks in preparation for finals.

We should be doing the same. Lock up top 2 and go into preservation mode while the rest of the top 8 (minus Geelong probably) kill each other for a top 4 spot.

A resting dimension has I think been missed and we need to address it urgently.

With Bruzzy returning to the backline, we face the risk that the clanking of his massive stainless steel balls as he makes his way across the turf could induce tinnitis in unsuspecting fellow defenders.

We need to institute a proactive resting and hearing protection campaign for the rest of the backline involving mandatory sessions in a sensory deprivation tank and time at a pilates retreat run by Trappist monnks.
