Geelong midfielder David Spriggs has come through the first major test of his comeback in an intra-club practice match in Newcastle, the club's base for this week's AFL community camps.
Spriggs missed the entire 2002 season with a knee injury, but he appears ready to reclaim his place in the Cats' line up.
The exciting Spriggs showed no ill effects from the injury that sidelined him all of last year as he made a solid contribution during the hit out.
"David played his first game back and got through it without any worries," Geelong spokesman Billy Brownless said after the game.
While all eyes were on Spriggs, a number of the club’s youngsters pushed early claims for a berth in the Cats opening Wizard Home Loans Cup clash with the Western Bulldogs.
Matthew McCarthy, who helped the Cats reserves team to the 2002 VFL premiership, played well in a forward role. Brownless also noted that the club’s draft picks had impressed with their form and the speed with which they had picked up coach Mark Thompson's game plan.
"During the week we’ve gone through some different set plays and we were keen to put those into practice and it was a good opportunity to see the new guys and the rookies in action," Brownless said.
"Andrew Mackie played well in a half as did Tom Lonergan. Tim Callan kicked a lovely running goal using his good pace, and Brett Moloney runs pretty hard and straight at it. He was very good."
Geelong chose not employ the new rules that will be in effect during the Wizard Home Loans Cup, concentrating on preparing for the home and away season.
Other players to stand out included Peter Street with two goals, Joel Corey and Corey Enright. Coach Thompson utilised the entire list apart from James Bartel who sat out after rolling his ankle in a pick-up game of basketball.
