Geelong midfielder David Spriggs has come through the first major test of his comeback in an intra-club practice match in Newcastle, the club's base for this week's AFL community camps.

Spriggs missed the entire 2002 season with a knee injury, but he appears ready to reclaim his place in the Cats' line up.

The exciting Spriggs showed no ill effects from the injury that sidelined him all of last year as he made a solid contribution during the hit out.

"David played his first game back and got through it without any worries," Geelong spokesman Billy Brownless said after the game.

While all eyes were on Spriggs, a number of the club’s youngsters pushed early claims for a berth in the Cats opening Wizard Home Loans Cup clash with the Western Bulldogs.

Matthew McCarthy, who helped the Cats reserves team to the 2002 VFL premiership, played well in a forward role. Brownless also noted that the club’s draft picks had impressed with their form and the speed with which they had picked up coach Mark Thompson's game plan.

"During the week we’ve gone through some different set plays and we were keen to put those into practice and it was a good opportunity to see the new guys and the rookies in action," Brownless said.

"Andrew Mackie played well in a half as did Tom Lonergan. Tim Callan kicked a lovely running goal using his good pace, and Brett Moloney runs pretty hard and straight at it. He was very good."

Geelong chose not employ the new rules that will be in effect during the Wizard Home Loans Cup, concentrating on preparing for the home and away season.

Other players to stand out included Peter Street with two goals, Joel Corey and Corey Enright. Coach Thompson utilised the entire list apart from James Bartel who sat out after rolling his ankle in a pick-up game of basketball.

This is great news regarding David Spriggs. He was sorely missed last year in our midfield and hopefully will remain injury free to help the Cats make the finals.

I was down at Lorne a few weeks back. I still can't believe you'd jump off that wall while sober and hurt yourself...

I've always thought Spriggs is a bit too small but if he builds up the muscle that shouldn't be a problem for him.

Looking forward to seeing the #6 back on the field.

That is great news for you people, have to admit I have a soft spot for him, hopefully he gets through the season OK.

It's basically like having a new recruit to the team. I just hope he's worked on his kicking skills as they weren't that flash at times in his first 2 seasons.

He would want to have improved his skills and ball winning ability if he expects to earn a game in the same midfield as Ling, Corey, Enright, Kelly and Chapman.

Agreed.

And if Spriggs is able to make it back into our midfield with the quality of young kids mentioned above, (add Ricco to that list) this can only be a good thing for our club. The same applies to James Bartel as well, still only very young but could step up into a midfield role.
