Big Roger = Most improved full-back in the comp

Let's be honest with each other here, Firrito was thrown into the position when Jon Hay decided to hang up the boots, so I think we can cut him and the team some slack.

Glass & Lake are near the top of the list for spoils, and both take the best opposition backman, and both have been playing (in Lake's case, until recently) without a real CHB. Scarlett without Egan playing also desreve praise.

Merrett is up there for spoils, near, if not top. Leading the league for 1% too. Doesn't have experience around him too, alot of Brisbane's backline, is under 24. (Begley, Merrett, Drummond, MacDonald, Patfull). Brisbane haven't had the easiest draw, so conceeding 2.25 goals/game is a brilliant effort.

Carroll's shocking average largely reflects our around the ground capitulation. On his own, he isn't a terrible defender when in form. Only a few years ago he was borderline AA and made the WA team of the year.

Let's look at Firrito as a case study.

What the article published in the HUN today demonstrates is the strength that media perceptions can hold within our game, and how important it is for a player to be seen to be as part of a successful side, particularly defenders.

For example, in 2007 Firrito's numbers and form were no better than they are at the same stage this year. Many Roos fans may argue he has been better in fact as I've heard many of them comment that he'd be up there in their best and fairest so far. However, there is one important difference. In 2007 the Roos were the feel good story of the year, played great football and were successful on- field. Firrito was seen to encapsulate everything the Shinboner spirit was about and got a great deal of positive media, including being considered as an All- Australian. In 2008, the Roos haven't had the success, the media is negative and all of a sudden, remember his form from both years has not really varied at all, he has become a bit of a scapegoat.

Enough said. This is why All- Australian selection is a farce, because the media has become such a significant influence for a selection panel that have varying associations and access to certain teams, players and match coverage.

if u didnt know stats lie
most of those players play on the most dangerous forward each week so a 2.5 goal return isnt to bad. i think u need to urs ur nogen a bit before you post stats that you havent even taken the time to think about and put in into perspective

No it's up to us to use the noggin to interpret the statistics presented.

It's an interesting concept if it is 100% accurate, but what happens if say, Franklin sucks Carlile up the ground, Carlile gets lost at HFF and instead zones off to harry a ball-carrier/receiver before zoning onto Roughead at CHF, meanwhile Franklin has doubled all the way back to the square where Chaplin has belatedly zoned off Roughie to take him and ultimately Buddy gets the goal following a contested grab?

Does this count as Carlile's negative goal or Chaplin's?

You could say this type of natural swapping would even out over the course of a season, but it's not really accurate is it.

It is one of those stats which you can never find any substantiation for or any explanations to queries like Dyers. Is it just an urban myth which some SEN guy makes up to suit an argument?

In addition to this, goals from free kicks are awarded against the defender on the forward, not the player who gave away the free kick

example from this year. Champion Data say that Fevola kicked 2 first half goals on James Frawley. Fevola kicked both those goals from free kicks. But Frawley doesn't have any frees against for the entire game

Mentioned in the HS today that Tayte Pears conceeded the most goals of any player last year with 51.

If anyone has a top 10 that would be much appreciated.
I saw that to and figured i would find something on here about it.
Don't know where to find last years figures but this table was listed on Page 1 in relation to 2008 (up til mid year)

Reverse Coleman
PLAYER CLUB GAMES GC AVE
Michael Firrito (N Melb) 12 38 2.67
Brian Lake (W Bull) 12 30 2.50
Josh Gibson (N Melb) 9 29 3.22
Nathan Brown (Coll) 12 29 2.42
Will Thursfi eld (Rich) 11 28 2.55
Darren Glass (W Coast) 12 28 2.33
Daniel Merrett (Bris) 12 27 2.25
Nathan Carroll (Melb) 7 26 3.71
Antoni Grover (Frem) 10 26 2.60
Toby Thurstans (Port) 11 26 2.36
Paddy Ryder (Ess) 12 26 2.17

In comparison Pears played 23 games. Played at Full back every match. 51 goals for the year makes his average 2.21 which doesn't look too bad.
