The Richmond 'Poison'

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

The great kids thing is a bit of a myth about the Doggies. That is a veteran team with the bulk of its players over 23 - exactly what Wallace was talking about when he said we would need more time to build.

Shaun Higgins (19), Ryan Griffin (20), Farren Ray (21), Adam Cooney (21), Will Minson (22), Cameron Wight (22).

When we are only playing one teenager and 6 guys under 23 we will be a lot more competitive too.

Foley, Polak, Raines, Deledio, Pattison, McGuane, Howat, Tambling, Schulz, Polo and Moore half our team under 23.

We only had 11 guys on the field with 50+ games.

imo the bulldogs are overrated, brad johnson is a GUN and carries them every week

Wow when you put it like that I think it just goes to show that Richmond are several years away from being a "decent" team.

The poison I speak of is the one that turns promising players into badly skilled veges, turns footy brains into mush and robs them of any passion for the club.

It's been going on for years, we poison them, and players never recover.

Brad Ottens and Aaron Fiora automatically come to mind, these guys go to new clubs, but still play as if they were wearing a Richmond jumper.

If, IF, we had of drafted Matthew Pavlich, would have turned into the gun he is now, or would he be an overhyped 'stupid' player?

Port Adelaide may have found the cure, I didn't see David Rodans game, but from all reports he was impressive. Did they have to do a brainwash a la 'A Clockwork Orange'.

I am hoping that the current crop, the Polos, the Deledios, the Tamblings, don't turn into another bunch of jokes.
LMAOO @ this thread

LMAOO because it is both humorous and right on the money

Over-hyped stupid players .... LMAOOOO @ our list as long as your arm in this dept.

LMAOOO @ the clockwork orange reference

I reckon it they need to do a little of Bobby D`s work in "Awakenings" ... that movie where they give this bloke who has been in a vegetative state for years a new "syrum" that turns him into a Rhodes scholar .

I have decided to reside in a vegetative/hybernation type state myself until we win a few games games that actually mean something . I mean seriously ... why do we continually work ourselves up into a lather every year to be fed the same piffle on an annual basis .

This post goes without saying that you don`t write the year off on the back of one performance , having said that ... i reckon that one hurt TW

Wouldn't go that far - but without Hahn, West and Cross winning the footy ... Giansiracuasa, McMahon, Gilbee, Murphy, Power, Ray and Eagleton wouldn't look 1/10th as good.

so your saying inside mids are important

Always have.

Have also pointed out that they are very hard to find and that your suggestion of using a lot of late-round picks on them wouldn't have produced results because there haven't been inside-mids available to us.

This thread for example where I suggested someone like Hislop sould be taken

I pointed out last season how the Eagles had abandoned taking talls with early picks (which they went and changed) but had stocked up with inside guys.

All I have said is that simply because we WANT inside guys, doesn't mean that they are AVAILABLE. That spending a lot of late-round picks on them wouldn't have produced much because very few of quality have been around for us.

Also that in Tuck, Polo, Foley we are beginning to address the need. We can't recruit a ruckman, tall defender, tall forward and inside midfielder with a single pick as you seem to wish we did.

yeh thats all well and good but the facts remain

2004 - polo
2005 - nothing
2006 - connors

of course they are hard to find but 2 in 3 years is a joke

But that is just the point - it isn't. If you are looking at under-23 inside midfielders you'll struggle to find 4-5 in any draft, let alone 4-5 to one club.

i disagree re your comments on wce talls.11 of their 16 talls have come in either the first second or third round with the majority of the rest coming thru the rookie system.they also have been prepared to turn over plenty of big blokes 2004 they had 18 genuine talls on the books and before that they had 20 odd. they have always targrted talls and they have in the main targeted big bodied hard at it medium sized onballers.after delisting trading4 talls last yr they drafted 6 to their list. this includes rookies.they just dont let their tall stocks dwindle or let their list structure become awry to much.as soon as their tall stocks were getting low they fixed the problem in one go. the only weakness they have in their talls atm with gardiners dparture is a developing ruckman. im sure that will be rectified next yr. carlton last yr took 5 talls in the one draft they recognise the importance of a well structured list and how to go about it the same cannot be said about miller and co at the moment.
it is also wrong of you to say that inside players were unavailable or talls for that matter. like everybody else eaqrly in each draft we had a choice.in the main we chose to ignore kpp and hard at it inside types with our early picks.instead we have targetted mostly lightly framed hbf types with our early picks ignoreing both kpp and binside types while we were at it.

No matter how talented Eade is as a coach, I think he would have struggled with our lot.

Look at the Doggies, they have got real talent. They have got great kids, but just as important, they have star senior players - Johnson, Darcy, Smith, West, Grant.

What stars do we have that compare to them???! none.
We have Richo my friend. Dont pigeon hole him with the others.

Seriously though we have talented players at our disposal. On paper we easily have a top 8 list. Easily.

Its a mixture of getting players on the park, bad mentality, gameplan (and inability to stick with one for four quaters) and fitness.

Opposition coaches would easily put Richardson, Brown, Newman, Couglan, Deledio, Polak, Simmonds, J. Bowden, Johnson, Foley, Raines and Tuck in their best 22. We complain alot about duds but we dont really have all that many. When it comes down to it most of us would keep P. Bowden, Hartigan, Hyde, Pettifer, Polo, Schulz, Tambling,Thursfield and White if given the choice. That leaves unproven players such as Casserly, Connors, Collins, Edwards, Hughes, McGuane, Meyer, Reiwoldt, Peterson and Oakley-Nicholls.

While the dury is still out on Krakouer, Kingsley, Jackson and Moore, the only 'duds' we can say we have is Tivendale, Gaspar and Hall. Tivendale is a walk up start every week and wins alot of ball and Gaspar, who isnt great but both players have their role on the field which I can live with.

The point im eluding to is that we have a decent playing list in the hands of an unconvincing and unproven coaching staff. Could go either way!

Didn't do 'em much good for Chris Naish.

As for the Eagles, Merenda was even more useless in a blue and gold guernsey.

Has anyone taken from Richmond actually flourished at another club?

Craig Lambert was handy with the Lions/Bears. Jason Torney has been above average at some stages with the Crows.

Stewie Maxfield
Brad Ottens:D (well the cats seem to like him)

Anyway if they did well at another club that begs the question of why did we get rid of them in the first place?

LMAO at the bitter and twisted types who think this is a good thread. Oh dear! You need to smell the roses people. Our team is composed of mainly a bunch of third and fourth year kids, and, at present, we have no ruckmen able to step onto the park and are missing a KEY midfielder and small forward/midfielder (our best player). On top of that our captain (and no. 2 mid) had an absolute shocker. Considering that they were pretty good, I thought.

Is all this Wallace and Miller's fault? Ha, ha ha!;)
