We have the video of the original & loved it just hope the new one is the same at least I wont have to rewind it all the time cause I missed part of the subtitles why they use white writing is beyond me very hard to read at times.

Thanks for that just looked up the times it is only being shown at 9.45pm today & tomorrow so might wait till next weekend we prefer to go to the afternoon sessions leave the nights for partying.

No, really! I actually heard it was based on the Wagner's Das Niebelung (sp?), as per the Ring trilogy.

Um no, it's a remake of a Japanese movie of the same name. When people watch a certain video they then get a phone call saying they have a week to live. Naomi Watts' character gets the call and has to solve the mystery before she is killed.

Yeah that's the one I was thinking of, and yes, Wagner's was an opera, the general thread of which has been re-used in many later plots.
What I didn't realise is that you were talking about a remake!
The original Ring (the Jap. horror) is great! Couldn't imagine anyone else doing it justice.

That is my concern the original was so good I was wondering how the westerners could make it as good at least their wont be subtitles maybe I am a slow reader but I have to rewind or pause frequently so I can read what theyre saying.

IMO the original ring was great because of such an original script the hollywood version although not very much different in terms of the script is still able to match the Japanese version mainly on the basis of still providing great fear & suspense with a few clever twists to the original script.
Film's visual & lighting design is great with some interesting outdoor settings which enhances the fear factor even more.
Hans Zimmer has also done a reasonable job with the background music especially the one which goes with the deadly video tape.
What a freaky movie, finally got to see it today.

The German epic poem the Nibelungenlied was the raw material from which Wagner chiselled out his unlistenable "Ring cycle" (no thats not a setting the washing machine for rinsing crusty jocks).
That story is probably where Tolkien derived the idea of a magic ring that makes you invisible.
It might be a Finnish musical based on one of ABBA's hit songs.
Or maybe its a documentary by the Tokyo based Geelong fan club about that red headed tagger, number 45, Cameron someone...
