Did this guy cost us a flag.

He entered his coaching career at the end of 2002 and this is what he did

Traded Hunter for pick 35:thumbsu:(not a bad effort)
Traded Penny for pick 17:thumbsdown:(i wish he could have been convinced to stay but in the end his body couldn't hold up)
Wanted Walsh at pick 4:thumbsdown:
Wanted Basset at pick 35:thumbsdown:

Now this is where it really gets bad.

2003

Guided us to a respectable 16th:thumbsdown:
Traded Brown for pick 6 & 20:thumbsu:
Gained Veale for Alvey and pick 6:thumbsdown:
Gained Koops for pick 19:thumbsdown:
Gained Street for pick 20:thumbsdown:
Gained Morgan for pick 34:thumbsdown:
Picked Rawlings in PSD:thumbsdown:
Didn't allow Clayton to pick Hudson in the draft as Rohde didn't think he could play AFL:thumbsdown:

He guided us to a respectable 14th in 2004 before being sacked for some unknown reason.

Picks 4,6,19,20,22,34 and 35 in the national draft.
Pick 1 in the PSD
Getting Hudson to the club four years earlier.

This probably would have made our current team better.

Hindsight is awesome isn't it.

Must be said that the 2003 Draft was easily the worst in the last 10-15 years, so having all those picks wouldn't have made as big a difference, although certainly better than Koops, Street, Morgan, Veale and Rawlings.

You know, I kinda think Rohde was the "coach we had to have", to steal a term from the "PM we didn't want".

I actually initially though Adam Morgan was a good pick up. I also kinda liked Streety, As for the rest........................

How about we take the chance to move on, considering it's five years later and all.

It's pretty ugly! But without Rohde the Mastermind would we have had the chance for Cooney, Griffen any others?

2003 is disgusting! Which ever way you look at it.

Hindsight is awesome but for the sake of the thread lets put some names to the picks, As i think Rohde did what was best for Rohde and not the club in trying to keep his job.

2003 we could/should have had.
Pick 1 Cooney
Pick 4 Ray/McLean a better option
Pick 6 Bradley/ Chaplin
Pick 19 Mundy/Dyson/Pettigrew
Pick 20 Butler/ Adcock
Pick 22 Thurley/Hudson
Pick 34 Peel/ Rischitelli
Pick 35 Hall / Fisher

and PSD pick 1 would have been Stevens if for not Veale Deal.

Now keep the pick and draft even 1-2 of these player how things could be just goes to show NEVER trade for the sake of trading, but as said Hindsight is awesome.

Its probably fair to say that our trading in 2003 wasn't at worlds best practise.

But how much does luck and timing play a part? For instance, if Nathan Brown had done the runner in 2004 instead of 2003, how much of a different result would we have had? Or would Rhode still have made a dogs breakfast of it?

I just think that there is some element of luck in all of this. If you have good picks in good drafts then you are set up, but you can be unlucky and have good picks in dud drafts and not get the benefit that you might expect.

Why?

1997 was 12 years ago and it constantly gets brought up and analysed and talked about...

It's good for the soul
1997 isn't all based on one person and the mistakes one person made. It gets attention from Bulldogs supporters because of the fact we were one kick from a Grand Final.

Rohde came, he stuffed up, now we've parted ways. Dwelling on mistakes made on the trade table by someone who's no longer at the club is pointless, because in retrospect every club would have made trade errors in the past 5 years. The discussion will only frustrate people.

What was most dissapointing in my opinion was the late development in guys such as Gilbee, Gia, Bobby Murphy, Hahn etc. Although these guys are great, they should of come good much earlier of which Rohde didn't help at all. Although I like the Bulldogs board I feel they made the wrong decision when Peter Rohde became coach of the doggies.
