Richmond West Coast friday night was scheduled back in December. In fact the first 9 rounds were so the floating fixture is only relevant from Rounds 10 on.
No excuse. Two sides who missed finals last year. You didn’t need to be a rocket scientist to predict how s**t the eagles were going to be given the way they ended last season.

The first, second and Third criteria when selecting prime times games for this floating fixture is simply this:
- will the game still be likely to be in the balance at the start of the last quarter?

If the answer to that question is “unlikely” then the AFL and seven should put a line though it no matter how big the clubs involved are.

Blowouts on prime time tv are so much more damaging to the AFL brand than any lack of exposure for its preferred sides.

Why don’t they seem to understand this? Casual sports fans want to watch competitive games. Last night was great. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire last quarter. Maybe the second time this season it’s happened.

At least, in the latest release from R16-19, there is some semblance of sanity to the fixtures chosen with all of the top sides this year getting some exposure against each other.
See - It’s not that hard to do AFL is it?

they (ch7) still don't like have an Interstate team hosting a Victorian team on Friday nights. It's very uncommon! (granted, round 16 has Lions/Dogs on Thurs night, and round 17 has Swans/Dogs on Fri night, but these are exceptions rather than the rule)

The rolling fixture was heralded as a chance to ensure the best fixtures were on Free to air tv every week.
There are basically 2 or 3 big TV games each week. Thursday night, Friday night and Saturday night.
Instead of picking the best performing sides the AFL have placed big Victorian sides in the key slots repeatedly despite they stinking the place out every week. Essendon, Collingwood, Hawthorn etc.

Essendon should not be inflicted on anyone other than KAYO viewers until 2023. So sick of watching these useless wasters in big game slots every duckin weekend.

Instead we have to watch them next weekend against Richmond, and on a FRIDAY night for their next game against Carlton.

In 2 weeks time there is probably one of the most anticipated game of the season, Melbourne v Freo, 1 v 2, and it’s on KAYO at 4:30 on a Saturday with the mighty Gold Coast v Hawthorn getting the plum Saturday night slot on seven that week.
This was scheduled just 2 weeks ago.
Inexcusable from Travis Auld and his fixtures committee.

The following clubs should not get near a FTA game for the rest of the season:
West coast
Collingwood
Essendon
Hawthorn
North melbourne

Why are we not seeing Brisbane, Melbourne, Fremantle, St kilda, Sydney, Carlton, in games against EACH OTHER?
These are the leagues best teams and yet we have to watch this shite served up by Essendon every duckin week?
It’s the worst set of fixtures on primetime so far this year to open a season that we have EVER seen.
Travis Auld couldn’t organise a piss up in a brewery.
Lol we haven’t had a Thursday or Friday night game. We’ve had one Saturday night and about 6 Sunday afternoon games. Don’t think we should be included in this

Viewers in SA and WA get to see their teams on FTA every single week. Can’t see why they’d be in a position to whinge.

Sure, there’s been a few too many prime time Essendon games lately. It’s been fun to watch them play so poorly but maybe time to relegate them to some other time slots. Nothing to get knickers in a knot about though.

Collingwood has a pretty s**t draw and we deserve it. No complaints. That’s what Kayo is for.

But supporters of those clubs that don’t live in that state see nothing.
Being a docker in melb if I didn’t pay for fox footy I’d see 1 game a year on tv if I was lucky.
Yet if I went for an over exposed vic club like Essendon and lived in the west I could see them 7-10 times a year for free.

The irony of this coming from a pies fan.
The most over exposed side in the entire league the last decade despite not even having a flag to show for it.

Every team in the afl should have at least one nationally televised FTA game on the main broadcaster per season on a Friday night and one per season on a Saturday night. It should be written into the broadcasting contract as a requirement by the AFL.
That’s 2 games a season for everyone.
Fair and reasonable and still leaves plenty of scope over 23 rounds to prioritise bigger games.
It would change very little anyway as it pretty much happens for every team in the league already apart from Gold Coast and freo the last few years.
Even north get the Good Friday game on Seven every year.
It would avoid those horrible (indefensible by any fair minded fan) situations where a club like Fremantle go six years without a Friday night FTA game.
It’s a national comp, treat it like one.

It’s not about me I’m fortunate.
It effects the clubs capacity for growth.
There is a reason companies sink billions on exposure through advertising because it works.
The AFL like with gambling money cling to these old vfl clubs playing the short game, think without them and the money they bring the league won’t survive.
I believe quite contrary.
they should be playing the long game and 18 healthy clubs(through promotion and exposure) will bring in 10folds the revenue when the hard works done.

What time does the Good Friday game @ Marvel start?

I don't think you can classify it as a "Friday night" game.

The WA clubs and SA clubs get more FTA exposure in their home states than any of the Vic clubs get.

Yes, you would be right that non-victorian clubs have more access to free-to-air tv IN THEIR OWN STATE
However, by doing so, it leads to 7 putting Victorian clubs onto free-to-air football more often as they know they'll still get the non-victorian teams onto 7 in their own state maximising ratings.

However, sponsors know this. If I sponsor Port Adelaide I get 300k on foxtel and 150k on 7 in SA. However, if I sponsor Melbourne, I get on 650k around the country in primetime football. I have a 40% bigger reach by investing my money with Melbourne.

So even though the FANS get better with the current deal. The clubs are worse off via sponsorship.

I mean, not arguing either way but this is factually wrong - 1x Thursday and 2x Friday for Collingwood (plus ANZAC Day which is preferable over those slots).

Edit: as in when a Hawks fan says they haven't had a prime time slot, Pies fans can't say "likewise us"

That’s just how it works. Some teams are bigger than others. Port arent often on Victorian FTA because nobody wants to watch them.

I could use one of the lesser Victorian teams like North in that example instead of Port and youd get the same result. Or I could use the Eagles and….. hang on…. They are one of the wealthiest clubs in the competition……

I’m talking the entire season - but sure you’re objecting to our clashes against St Kilda, Brisbane and the Western Bulldogs being prime time? Is the premise of the OP not that those sides deserve to be playing in prime time?

You gotta be taking the piss right?

2022 Collingwood fixtures:
Round 1 - Friday primetime v St kilda (seven)
Round 3 - Saturday primetime v Geelong (seven)
Round 5 - Thursday primetime v Lions (seven)
Round 6 - Anzac Day primetime v Essendon (seven)
Round 9 - Friday primetime v bulldogs (seven)

In the first 9 rounds of 2022 alone, you have been shown in primetime slots on channel 7 more times than Fremantles entire 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 first 15 games put together. No joke.

Just let that one sink in for a minute.

ANZAC Day as an event that has been built up over the past thirty years by the two clubs involved is obviously an exception.

Outside of that, you’re bemoaning us having prime time clashes against other top eight sides?

Also, Freo are broadcast into Perth FTA every week, no matter how pedestrian the bullshit football they served up in those non-finals contending years has been. Of course they’re not getting broadcast into a national market that has no vested interest in them given their historically poor performances and low levels of support outside of Western Australia?

In the next seven Rounds Collingwood plays just one Saturday night blockbuster against the Suns who no doubt are rapt to be getting prime time exposure for a change. You do realise when interstate teams play in prime time slots they usually have an opponent? No Friday games. Plus a traditional Melbourne game on QB … the other five are twilight zone time slots. AFL seem to be working their scheduling as advertised.
