We will see a lot of changes over the next month or two, so to keep us busy, thought I would start a thread on what our Round 1 2019 team looks like. We will obviously pick our team based on what we have, but as players come and go, we can all make changes.

We are linked to a lot of existing players. With many being contracted, we will have to give players or picks to get them. This will obviously change our thoughts on draft picks. For example, gaining Shiel, losing Cegs, Miles going elsewhere, May in, etc. My first cut is therefore:

FF: Bruest - Ceglar - Roughie
HF: Puopolo - Gunston - Impey
Ce: Shiels - Howe - Smith
HB: Birchall - Burton - Sicily
FB: Hardwick - Frawley - Stratton

Ru: McEvoy
RR: O'Meara
Ro: Mitchell

I/C: Burgoyne, Henderson, Worpel and Morrison

How do you see it?

Having an early look at a round 1 best 22 with trades obviously still to go through and a lot of other things to happen between now and then

B: Stratton, Frawley, Hardwick
HB: Birchall, Sicily, Morrison
C: Smith, Mitchell, Scully
HF: Burgoyne, Gunston, Wingard
F: Puopolo, Roughead, Breust

FOLL: McEvoy, O'Meara, Shiels
INT: Henderson, Impey, Ceglar, Worpel

Colour coded to the ripeness of a banana
Pretty green = under 23
Pretty ripe = 23-29
Extra ripe = 30 and over

I like this team but think with Scully in, Hendo is out for Howe or Cousins to give us more contested ball winners.

Hoping to see Brand push Chip out too but that's for another thread.

Reckon a few changes per the above. Plus hopefully we have Nash, Pittonet, Hanrahan, Scrimshaw, Brand, cousins pushing for a start

Would love by years end moore to come in for puopolo, brand for frawley and nash for rough. If that happens our team suddenly doesnt look old at all.

This isn’t our best 22. But it’s trying to highlight the transition we are in and what is left to do. If we dropped Roughead, poppy, Burgoyne and Frawley (our oldest players with the shortest time left as best 22) we can still field a strong side. The underlined players have been named here as the replacements. For the record, I think it is too soon for Lewis but without roughy I’d hope he can play some games in that role next season.

The bolded players are the next ones to consider for replacement. I think smith will play into his mid thirties. Freak athlete. The rest have 1-3 years. Probably lose 1-2 of this group in each of the next two years. Sitting at box hill we have O’Brien (as a defender - yes I still
Have hope!), cousins, glass, Nash that have been blooded. If we find one or two there plus our underlined players above continue to develop, we don’t need much more to round out the rebuild.

Provided everyone is fit for round one:

Hardwick - Frawley - Stratton
Birchall - Sicily - Burgoyne

Big Boy - Mitchell - O'Meara
Smith - Shiels - Scully

Wingard - Gunston - Impey
Breust - Roughie - Puopolo

Bench from: Ceglar, Henderson, Morrison, Worpel, Scrimshaw, Howe, Brand, Glass, Nash, O'Brien, Schoey, Cousins, Mirra
Writing this all out show me that we still have a deep squad, despite our dearth of quality KPP. The glaring holes are at CHB, CHF and to a slightly lesser extent FB and FF.

Backline :
Hardwick Frawley Impey
Sicily Stratton Birchall

Midfield:
Smith Mitchell Scully
McEvoy O’Meara Shiels

Forwards :
Burgoyne Gunston Wingard
Breust Roughead Puopolo

Int.chg :
Worpel Morrison Henderson Howe

Goes to show what I’ve been saying, our inside mid stocks are quite strong as long as jaeger keeps injury free and Worps and Howe improve.
Mitchell
O’Meara
Shiels
Worpel
Howe
Burgoyne.

Assuming Graham Wright doesn't play funny games from now until 8.30pm and no other best 22 player is traded out...

You reckon hanrahan? Interesting. I hadn’t picked him to be next into the side despite his good showing in the BH finals. I’ll keep my eyes more open.

I doubt Scrimshaw will be in for round 1, but I will give Scully and Birchall the benefit of the doubt. We will miss Burton's pace down back if Birchall doesn't return.

IN: Wingard, Scully, Birchall, Brand
OUT: Burton, Duryea, Nash (still learning the game needs more VFL time)

B: Stratton, Frawley, Hardwick

If you don't play Shoe I reckon Sicily goes forward.

I’ll be very surprised if Scrimshaw plays much.

Not many, if any, weak links there. Be interesting to see how we go with a Cegs, Nash and Schoey

With the rule changes for 2019, endurance and speed will be vital, as will tall timber.
