We are the boys from old FITZROY,
we wear the colours, maroon and blue.
We will always fight for victory,
and we'll always see it through.
Win or lose, we do or die,
in defeat, we always try.
FITZROY, FITZROY,
the club we hold so dear.
PREMIERS, WE'LL BE THIS YEAR!!!!

Did anyone know the tune for our club song, La Marseillaise, was actually written by a French poet-soldier, named Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle, who wrote it after a night out on the turps?

Apparently he found it on his desk the next morning & didn't know where it had come from.

True Story. Makes you even more proud to have it as our theme song, don't you think?

Maybe some of the poet-soldiers on this forum have had similar experiences.

I actually tried to get Fitzroy to use the slogan "The Roys Are Back In Town" for their marketing back in 1990. Unfortunately they couldn't afford the copyright, so we ended up with James Manson's "Power of the People" instead. Nothing against James' song, but it wasn't quite as catchy as Thin Lizzy's.

So they actually had to pay if they wanted to use the slogan "The Roys are Back in Town"??? Well, it's close to the song title, but still . . .!!! After all, adding the word 'Roys' gives it a context all of its own - and considering the fact that "back in town" is just as much a footy term as it is a reference to Thin Lizzy, it seems pretty over the top that they would have had to pay to use the copyright. Just another example of corporate greed gone wild I suppose.

I only ever heard J.Manson's song once. It was played on TV one night, I think during the pre-season. I can't remember what year it was though.

Well, Jim joined us in '93, so it would probably have been '94 or '95???

Speaking of the LaMarseillaise, well back in Year 11 (1996) we were studying the French Revolution, and as we walked into class one day, the teacher was playing the above tune (I can't be bothered trying to spell it again

) and asking us what it was, and EVERYONE was coming in saying, 'Sir, why are you playing the Fitzroy song????'

So in one corner we had a teacher ripping his hair out, and a chorus of the Lions song in the other.

It was just one of those moments.

And both songs are much better than the proposed theme song of the 'North Fitzroy Kangaroos', which I believe was going to include SOME of Fitzroy's words to the tune of "Join in the chorus."

I couldn't think of anything suitably grand to show my joy at the appearance of the Fitzroy board on Big Footy, so I will simply say GO ROYS!
