After tonight's game from Paddy and Marshall, I've got to thinking, there seems to be a glut of high quality ruck craft going on not only at the bounce but also around the ground.

  • Todd Goldstein, is he finding career form?
  • Max Gawn, captaincy duties has not nulled his influence. Vying for no 1 in the comp at the minute.
  • Sauce Jacobs, was good last night, not reached his heights but is looking good.
  • Paddy and Rowan, this ruck duo is causing problems for oppo teams - tonight was evident.
  • Brody Grundy, is Brody Grundy - a bit behind Maxy at the minute, as far as impact goes - not much, however consistently good.
  • Pittonet for the blues, is he threatening Kruezer as no 1 at the blose? (Injury for Matty aside)
  • Scotty Lycett, boy Port could've use him tonight and may have been the deciding factor - maybe. (really think he's underrated - premiership player).
  • Big boy McEvoy, probably not the heights of some here but has popped up in critical moments.
  • Mummy has had his moments, was good against the Pies.
  • EDITED: Forgot Tim English, has had impact of late.
Is the big man making a come back? Providing more presence than usual resting forward and back (Marshall tonight did a lot of forward work)? Guys like Gawn, Goldy and Grundy (the triple G) becoming the extra mid?

Discuss.

I fully expected it.

Ladhams was third in line to Ryder, of course he'd beat him, especially in the centre where Paddy beats most.

Though going fwd I think Ladhams is as good second option as any. Cant knock the decision.

Went through this Phrase where you simply looked for a 200cm dude to hit the ball after every goal

Now you have to be very dynamic, Tim English is playing some absolutely brilliant football. Ild have Goldstein as the AA ruck, with if there was a second spot grundy, as he does a lot of link up play, Gawn has found form, Liked Pittonet, while untidy has moved clubs for a chance and has looked great

It's not about taking the odd mark anymore, You either have to act as a midfield, Legit threaten and be able to go forward without messing up the forward structure, or run hard enough to be involved with a zone defense. I think in general ruckmen are becoming more talented and fitter

Take a look at the premiership rucks over the past decade... hardly the competitions elite.

It's probably the last position you look at when building a premiership side.

I don't see their impact as any better than previous years. When you look over time you can see a definitive shift in the role of a ruck but what it is now has been so for years. I think all you are doing here is pointing out that rucks can be very useful. Of the list you write few have been really good each week which is typical of previous years.

This is an embarrassing statement. Absolutely embarrassing.

An OP by a Collingwood supporter that lists 11 good ruckmen in the league - not one of them is NicNat. Following day NicNat puts on a ruckwork clinic and dominates Grundy.

Delicious.

I'm sure it was an oversight. He missed English initially and both Soldo and Nankervis are missing....

Witts has been fantastic for us. Starting to take contested marks around the ground as well. Works his absolute ass off every game

Geez Brody looked a bit of a nancy boy tonight, I thought NicNat made his peesence felt with some key moments, and displays of strength.

Which was the last team to win a flag with a dominant ruckman?

When the best ruckmen in the comp have got to play in the GF in recent years (Grundy 2018, NicNat 2015, Sandilands 2013) they've all been on the losing team.
Collingwood may have lost in 2018 but we had 2 ruckman tag him the entire game.

Shows that oppo coaches do put a lot of thought into stopping the best ruckmen.

Number one player in comp according to player ratings. Although you wouldn't know it with how the media fap on about Grundy, Gawn and NicNat.
Outstanding effort for a bloke in a team anchored in the bottom 2 with the season shot and nothing to play for.

Rated best player in the comp, and his team is 2nd last...

Once again, it seems the influence of a dominant ruck isn't all that much.

These days you often see a ruckman winning total hit-outs and 'hit-outs to advantage' but being on the losing side.
e.g. basically any loss that Goldy or Gawn play in.
