Some people just have 'it' aerobically. There's an Australian guy, Jimmy Whelan, who has just transferred from professional cycling back to running and dropped a 62-minute half marathon first race. It’s interesting peoples running profiles. I have a friend that was a high level cyclist who took up running as it was less expensive. Basically “just runs” and only really averages 5km on his runs. Despite this his fastest ever 5km (17:49) was done during the Puffing Billy run (13.5km) and his best 10k (36:58) & HM (1:18:30) times came during a marathon that he ran 2:46:48 with a stress fracture in his foot.
I’m the same. My 1km “sprints” are barely quicker than my 5km splits which are barely quicker than my 10km splits![]()
Granted their training is a lot different - 4-5 hours of aerobic work with longer threshold work, there's a decent amount of crossover. I rarely do bike sessions but I was surprised at how much distance I could cover over 40-60 mins.
