Callinan is so useless defensively that you can't even say that he fills space on the field because he is so tiny. Highly skilled with great instincts but lacking any hint of athleticism or defensive drive. He would have been great 30 years ago when athletic demands on players were much lower.

I was watching him today and he was running along the wing at Elizabeff and it looked like he wasn't even moving.

His legs were pumping up and down but he wasn't even moving.

Ha ha ha

Yeah, ok. You went to mars during last years finals series?

Just saying.

This.

There's absolutely no point in playing Callinan if he's useless in finals. The best prediction of future behaviour is past behaviour and we may as well have fielded a dildo last year.

He should have been delisted because what's the point of a player hogging a spot during the season if he can't play finals.

We did the honourable thing upgrading Nutta. He has done everything we could have asked of him (except kick goals in finals). I don't mind that we treat all our players with respect but I just wish some of them (Bock, Davis, Gunston, Tippett) would reciprocate.

Just out if curiosity, where was that respect to Tom Lee, Allen Obst, and other players delisted after oe year?

I don't mind what you said but it works both ways.

My point was that we usually give players more leeway than other clubs. Obst and Lee didn't deserve the benefit of the doubt and Obst subsequent showed that the decision was correct. The smart decision was to keep Callinan as a rookie and promote Laird (as I suggested during the off season) with Nutta acting as a back-up to be promoted after round 11 if required.

It's a bit like our attitude toward the AFL. Never complain, always be good boys and they will look after us. That worked well.

Any North fans see James Craig play? His stats seem much better than last year; wonder if we cut him too early.
Good tap ruckman at SANFL level but too small for the AFL. Is getting a little better around the ground but still doesn't make the most of his height advantage, rarely takes more than a couple of marks. Has no other strings to his bow, can't go forward and be dangerous.

Nope, doesn't work like that.

If clubs want players to be loyal and respectful to them, they must follow suit. If the AFL suggest a rookie contract should be 2 years, they should be given 2 years.

I don't have a problem either way but don't bitch if a player isn't nice to you if your respectful to all players as well.

Martin's playing pretty well, Jaensch not so much but has gone on a couple of dashes off half back and at least tried to create. Graham has been presenting OK up forward and has a couple of goals.

Haven't seen Henderson so I'm guessing he's on standby for tomorrow.
Martin has to be given a decent crack at AFL for once and a real one at that

Strange in that it was actually on the big stage, not the SANFL, and he shit himself? He was completely useless, and no amount of standout finals series in a second tier league is going to make up for that.

Are you one of those people in the crowd who sits there and tells anybody who criticises a player out on the field to go out there and do better?

I don't really feel that it it is right to slag off the SANFL and all of the guys playing it every week. Not many good footballers get to play SANFL. let alone AFL.

It's not slagging off the SANFL, it's a simple fact that the gap between SANFL finals and AFL finals is massive. We're talking about the best in the country vs the best in semi-professional state league. Just doesn't compare.

Unfortunately for Callinan, he just lacks the size and pace to go up againstthe battle hardened, experienced, quality AFL players found in the majority of finals sides. His class allows him to overcome this against sides in the bottom half of the ladder, but not the top. It's a shame, I enjoyed watching him play and he seems like a top bloke and I wanted him to do well, God knows we need a decent crumber. I would prefer no crumber however, than to one who is 30 years old and cannot compete with top 8 quality opposition. I'd rather just play another midfielder who can contribute in other ways.

It's the best predictor if you have a reasonable enough sample size. Three games isn't enough.

What's the point of someone playing if they won't get us to finals!

Did you get off the ground and immediately come post, Brodie?

It has to be enough. Finals don't grow on trees and you need to take that opportunity; Callinan didn't that opportunity, he didn't even come close.

I did think about that, but the alternative is to play Callinan for 22 games and then blood someone else in finals. Sounds like a stupid idea to me.

Assumes playing the worse player still gets you to the finals.

Also assumes that every game of football is the same as the last. Injuries, form, matchups are much more influential than "I can't play in spring".

Was the same in the prelim - he busts his arse trying, but just doesn't cover enough ground.

Martin's stats are great - again. Anyone at the game able to tell whether he was as good as they suggest?

It doesn't assume that at all. It is a decision that carries risk like any, but it's about is the risk being worth it considering the alternative is stupid.

Nope, it doesn't assume that either. It's an assessment based on available information.

In my view it's not worth the risk of putting games into Callinan, at the expense of someone else, to find out if he's shit in finals or not. He's too old for that and missed his opportunity when he was deplorable in last year's finals.
