Dowdell played college basketball in the US, and was often fouled out due to his rough style of play. Osbourne may have been the same though, I'm not sure.
I found and article about Osborn in my edited post above. He played college ball but I think I was getting the rough style of play mixed up with Dowdell.

They had the option of playing him in R1-5 as well.. he wasn't only available in R6 you realise? JJ played all 5 games from R1-5. Lynch played 2 of them. LJ didn't even make the emergency list until Tex got injured.

Same story last year.. LJ was pretty much available all last year and never got a look in, despite Walker & Tiprat missing a heap of games. Couldn't even get near the emergency list.

But go on.. keep making excuses for him. If they wanted to select him then they would have, just as they've created opportunities for so many other players over the last 18 months. How many times have they bothered to select him again?

Ohh FFS how many times to we need to explain this too you.

Johnstone and Lynch completely different players.
Johnstone and SMack different players
Johnstone and JJ different players.

JJ and Smack are the only 2 of that quartet that are comparable.
Why you might ask? Because they are ruck forwards.
Whether its 10% or 50% of the time they are picked to play a role in the ruck. Something in which LJ Lynch and Tex cannot do.
Otherwise, if like at North Adelaide on the weekend when lead ruck James Craig goes down, we are stuck playing key position players in the ruck allowing the opposition to dominate this area. Lachy Button had 61 hit outs against North on the weekend when this occurred.

Now for Lynch, he is a 3rd tall, flanker floater type. He is mobile and has a good engine. Two things that LJ doesnt have. Lynch is comparable to Ricky Henderson.

The one and simply only player on our entire list, let alone best 22 that you can compare LJ too is Tex. They are the only two players who are simply out and out Key Position Forwards. Now since an opening in this position has happened there has been 1 week when LJ couldve been picked. For this 1 and only week they decided to bolster theyre ruck stocks trying to make that weakness a potential advantage. It didnt work and LJ has been injured ever since.

Is this simple and clear enough for you to understand? Or should i draw pictures?

Garbage. Smack spends more time stinking it up in the forward line than he does relieving Jacobs in the ruck. If Tex was available, then Smack wouldn't be playing (and LJ would be even further away from selection).

You can make all the excuses you like for him, but there's not a skerick of proof to suggest that the selectors have any interest in LJ at all. None. There is, on the other side, ample evidence to suggest that he's a last resort option who they would only play in the direst of injury list emergencies.

So jacobs gets injured 30 seconds in like Reilly did. Who rucks if we pick LJ ahead of Smack??

Not sure I agree with your assessment of Lynch v Johnston, have watched Johnston a few times and I'd say he's a fair bit quicker and more agile than Lynch, certainly a better contested mark and kick. It just comes down to work rate, attitude and ball finding ability, where Lynch seems to have him. He's also probably 2-3cms too short and 10kgs too light for his ideal position as a KPF at AFL level.

I'd really like to see Johnston given a decent run though. We didn't exactly get him for spare change, with Rendell rating him extremely highly. Considering our season is next to shot and we've struggled to find anyone resembling a consistent or reliable goal scorer, it couldn't hurt to give him a shot.

He doesnt have the running ability of Lynch.
Whether its attitude or just abilty, he doesnt.

Hence why at this stage they arent comparable

Lynch can cover a hell of a lot more ground, his work rate is phenomenal and he burns his opponents similar to the way Riewoldt does, however he is slow, Rutten/Walker kind of slow. Johnston is reasonably quick for his size.

Reserves stats are up. Standout performances are probably (1) Atkins who had 22 touches, 6 marks, 5 tackles and a goal. Ran at >90% kicking efficiency as well. (2) Osborn on return from a long term injury had 13 touches, 6 marks (including 2 contested) and kicked 3.2.

Are there hitout stats for the reserves? Or did he play solely as a forward?

I'd say Lynch has middle of the road speed. He's not that slow :/

He got a handful of hit outs. About 6 from memory. Centrals had 2 blokes get 20-odd so it looks like Osborn played exclusively forward and did a bit of forward 50 rucking, if I had to guess.

For the record Sam Shaw played and did not have the influence that LJ did. Lewis had a day out, albeit against my witches hats. I think Shaw will come into the crows and Hendo will go forward. I like Shaws ability to hold down a key forward as well as provide run. We've missed him this season

Sorry, Jacobs slow was a bit harsh, but he is not quick at all.

Your acting as if a player is either fast or slow, and no in between or varying levels?

Lynch is average pace, and if he was quick it wouldnt really change his game.

Most fast players touch the ball 10 times a game anyway, and lynch gets a lot more ball than that

Lynch is an elite field kick, Johnston isnt
Their goal kicking is similar, with Johnston having more distance ill give him that
Lynch rarely gets tackled, seems to be very strong or have good core strength
Lynch is a a better footballer, simple as that, he can play midfield or back if need be
Lynch is also a very hard match up, to small/agile/quick for Key backs, but he also is too tall/strong/fit for small backmen

Contested marking is almost gone from AFL level. Theres maybe 1 or 2 a game these days, and it will be walker and jenkins job to take them next year

Johnston cant play lynch's role, he doesn't have the petrol tickets to run all over the ground, he is in competition with walker. He cant ruck, so he wont take Jenkins role. If he doesnt play in the next couple of weeks i think he is done, because when walker comes back, he will never get in

But in saying that, i expect him to get a run in the coming weeks, maybe even this week

Jenkins who has rucked for about 5 minutes per quarter is going to ruck for the whole game, right

Whilst I agree, Johnston can't be compared to anyone at AFC, I disagree that he is most like Tex. I reckon at AFL he want be a key position forward but more of a 3rd tall leading player. Somewhere between Lynch & Tex. I think Johnston will always be fighting Lynch for the spot.
