johnston just copped a pretty solid knock to the knee in this piss poor game.

i blame westies for this mass of defence and slow moving play. it's always their fault.
I thought it was a great game myself. :D

Copied from the LJ thread:

The injury happened 5 or 10 minutes into the second quarter. It was from a collision, no weird twisting or landing. He got assisted off the ground (only about 10m) and limped to the bench. He and the team doc tried to "walk it off" along the boundary and about halfway through the second quarter he came back on for a few minutes but could barely jog and looked to be struggling. He came off again and went straight down to the rooms. After half time he was on crutches.

My guess is nothing too horrible (nothing broken and no dreaded ACL) but possibly a bone bruise or bad corky.

mckernan hardly disgraced himself. deserves a second crack next week

Like i said all week. McKernan was great for us mainly through structure. It meant Jenkins could stay forward. By doing so (if he kicked straight) he couldve dominated

McKernan was not great for us and yes did help with structure but as individual was ordinary with his one arm attempts to mark the ball and how many times did he stop and not attack the ball to try to tackle which usually didn't .
Yes will probably get another game and will probably play worse but guess we can keep on hoping.

This shits me. He's a huge man, forget wrestling and just go up with two hands! Make them do the work to wrestle/spoil you and you might get a free kick out of it.

Was unlucky not to get a holding the ball decision right in front of goal in the 2nd quarter - Tackled a Hawks player who didn't dispose of it legally..

Would've been a real confidence booster (had he kicked it!)

Was a great tackle. Eddie was barracking for a free and rightly so. Feels weird agreeing with Eddie McGuire so often..

State game this week vs the NAFL

A few players can rest up but will also miss out on pressing for selection.

You are criticising McKernan for his tackling?

Seriously?

The guy who consistently brought his opponent to ground in the tackles...that Smack?

The guy with the second most tackles, that Smack?

For a first game back in a different league, he was alright. He still has a way to go and scoreboard pressure will be key to his success. I'd also point out that hawthorn kills any team that bomb it in to a key forward...and that is the way the ball was fed to Smack...that was his role, he didn't take any marks in those contests...but not many players do against the Hawks

So any news on how Rory Atkins has been going? Haven't seen his name anywhere.

Played the first few games for Sturt and was generally picking up about 10 touches before being dropped to their magoos. The one game I saw him play he didnt get heaps of it, but looked very classy when he did. Doesn't have an SANFL tank, let alone an AFL one, but I'm confident that with a few pre seasons under his belt he can be a good player. Moves incredibly like Didak.

Jenkins had what, 6 shots on goal? 2 didn't make the distance/went OOTF. He actually looked better without Walker there and McKernan playing further up. It was McKernan's first game in forever and he looked OK as a second ruck. If he loses his inconsistency and actually improves, we might be OK.

Hi guys,
I dont normally get a chance to watch alot of SANFL matches. Although good to see Sauce playing better against the Hawks, How has Graham been going this year??? I remember when we traded him he suggested that he was going to be trying to make the ruck spot his....

Jenkins' kicking was pretty ordinary, but the positive is that he earned every one of those 6 shots on goal. Let's not forget that this was only his 17th game at AFL level and he was asked to be our #1 KPP forward for the first time. Jenkins is on one massive learning curve right now and I find it very difficult to be overly critical of his game. I loved his aggression and willingness to attack the ball, something which McKernan would do well to emulate.

If I am totally honest, his game currently has two flaws - one is his tendency to drop in & out of games (he dominated Gibson early, but was totally missing in the 4th quarter), the other is his kicking (which occasionally makes Tippett look good).

McKernan was a handy 2nd ruck. Jacobs played better this week - but I can't really say whether or not McKernan's presence had anything to do with that. I suspect the effect was more psychological than anything, given that Jacobs was poor from the very first bounce last week (indicating that his problem is not caused by fatigue). McKernan was (apparently) reasonably handy around the ground. I still think he needs to do more as a 2nd KPP forward though. He did have one goal assist, but his own scorecard read 0.0 - that's not nearly enough output for a KPP forward. Jenkins was averaging just over a goal per game as 2nd banana, with Walker copping all the attention; McKernan needs to be contributing on the scoreboard at a similar rate. I'm not expecting him to kick 5 goals every week, but 1 goal assist and 0.0 off his own boot is pathetic - Petrenko averaged much more than that and was quite rightly dumped for failing to perform.

McKernan now has something he's never had in his career - positional security. With Walker & LJ out of the picture, his position in the team is completely secure. That means he has the opportunity to settle into the role and make it his. I hope, both for his sake and the team's, that he is able to lift himself to the AFL standard. If he doesn't, then the consequences for both him and the team do not bear contemplating.
