I like how much Vader still backs himself in when everybody and i mean everybody has told him hes wrong.

At least he sticks by his guns. As wrong as they may be
Having a different opinion doesn't make me wrong. I will be wrong if Callinan is delisted at the end of the year and LJ is given a new contract. Note that I've given LJ a 50/50 chance of surviving, so a new contract alone does not make me wrong (particularly if we only turn over a few players due to the Tiprat penalties). Callinan being delisted would definitely make me wrong though.

What weapon did Symes have - ordinary disposal, not overly quick. Apart from giving 100% he didn't have any great attributes.

LJ is a proven goal-kicker at SANFL level & accurate kick for goal. It's not like we are overflowing with goal-kicking forwards at the moment...
Symes also had the unhappy ability to get the ball, particularly in contested situations. He obviously had weapons which were better suited to the SANFL - given that he won a Magarey Medal.

LJ might be a straight kick, but that's not much good if you don't get the ball in the first place. He's not overly tall, not overly strong and not overly quick. Like Symes, I fear that his weapons are well suited to the SANFL, but ill-suited to the AFL.

Truth be told, I would love to know why he's so badly out of favour with the selectors. On the surface his SANFL performances appear to be pretty decent, yet he's never even mentioned come selection night. There has to be a reason for it, one which is not apparent to the average mug punter like you or I.

Agree that a reason LJ has not been given opportunities.
But regarding point in not getting the ball enough even though great kick .
I suggest would be not that hard to get the ball more times than other forwards picked on regular basis
Petrenko
McKernan
Callinan
even Johncock end of last year.

And yet the selection panel consistently chose those players over LJ. Ever wondered why?

Hopefully next year he becomes a "depth player" and is gone by 2015. I have no problem with that at all.

What I have a problem with is people suggesting that he should be delisted this year, solely on the basis of age, when there are at least 8 candidates ahead of him on the chopping block, none of whom are performing anywhere near as well as Callinan.

So much rambling so little idea.

If you cast your mind back to late last year Callinan was not going to be upgraded onto the main list. It took Tippetgate and one PR nightmare after another to finally get him onto the senior list for 2013. I love Nutta nearly as much as SP but if you think a promising young key forward like lewis Johnston who has dominated games in the Sanfl is getting delisted before a 30 year old slow midget forward pocket you are more deluded than I thought.

Your problem is you have never seen Johnston play and you go off stats which makes your opinion near worthless. Callinan needs a big finish to the year and is 50/50 to stay on at best. LJ wont be cut.

reason .....he lacks the competitive spirit ....contested ball an intensity
agree with all your thoughts .......depth player at best ...delisting a strong option

Except this slow old midget was the 2nd equal goal kicker and was always going to get upgraded last year.

He is now the highest goal scorer from last year who is currently in our side.

Where on earth did that come from? Callinan's upgrade last year was never in any doubt after he played 20+ senior games as a "nominated rookie". The only question was whether or not Laird would be upgraded as well - he wasn't.

Callinan may not be on our list next year - but if he's not then we will have cut very deeply indeed, because he's #9 on the chopping block at worst. LJ ranks somewhere in the range from 4-6. He's safe if we only cut 3. He's in trouble if we cut more. I'd suggest that the odds of Callinan being delisted would be around 5-10%, LJ at 50%.

Please someone tell me .
I wish I had the answer myself.

I can point to the fact that he's never been selected and only rarely made the emergency list. Others can point to the fact that he kicked 60 goals in the SANFL last year, which is a feat not to be sneezed at. They have a valid point. What I don't understand is why a player capable of that feat has played just 3 AFL games in 4 1/2 years and why his name is seemingly never mentioned by the selection panel.

Wrong. He was going to be kept on as a rookie but then we lost all our draft picks and Kurt.

Has not put it beyond doubt this year nowhere near. I hope he can.

Funny.. but I think you're the only one with that recollection of events. Callinan played 20+ games last year and was our equal 2nd highest goal scorer. His promotion was announced long before Tippett even made up his mind where he wanted to go. It was a fair accompli long before the end of the season.

The only debate about rookie promotion was whether or not to promote Laird as well.

Mate i listened to trade week radio and 5AA every day for the whole trade period, before and after. Noble mentioned in several interviews they were keeping all options open in regards to Callinan.

Callinan to the senior list was no certainty. Cornsey was having a fit and kept talking about what a disgrace it would be and how the rookie list takes advantage of players.

If you go back and look at when his promotion was announced you will find it was well after trade week and Tippett leaving. Apology accepted.

ADELAIDE has found room on its senior list for veteran goalsneak Ian Callinan.
Callinan, who booted 39 goals in 23 matches this season, was elevated from the rookie list this season. But now the 29-year-old has the security of starting on the senior list in 2013.

"Ian was always part of our plans for next season," Crows list manager David Noble said, adding Callinan has signed a one-year contract.

"But we needed to delay the decision to upgrade him until we had a closer look at our primary list numbers through the early stages of the trade and free agency periods.

That sounds to me more that they were holding off to see if they could trade in a better player before upgrading him, rather than waiting to get rid of Kurt Tippett. They already knew well before then that Tippett was leaving.

Of course this happened well after we knew Kurt was gone. But if Tippett stayed that would have been another spot taken on the senior list.

The point being he barely made it onto the senior list after kicking 40 goals last year. With his age and form this year it will be touch and go again. I hope he can have a big finish and get another year.

To suggest he would be retained instead of Lewis Johnston is just stupid.

Only time will tell. Right now Callinan is in the team and LJ is about 3000 miles away from selection, having been about 2999 miles away before injury struck. I know which one I think is more likely to be given a new contract - and it's not the kid who has played just 3 games in 5 years and is lucky to still be on an AFL list at all.

Just because you don't agree with it doesn't make it stupid. I have seen Lewis Johnston play and there is nothing to suggest to me he is nothing better than avg depth player. Plenty of players have kicked big totals of goals in the SANFL never to make it in the AFL. Alan Richardson, Benkie (not sure about spelling) and even Scott Hodges struggled for the most part of it.

Nutta is pure and simple our best small crumbing forward. He has probably the best footy brain at the club, clean hands and a brilliant eye for goal. I think both will be retained for at least one more year but Nutta has the runs on the board at AFL level. Johnston only has blue sky.

I read that as he was going to be promoted, but they needed to work out via which route.
I thought we were going to pay Tambling's contract out and possibly give Callinan his spot. Then when the shit hit the fan we decided that they both would be better than draft pick #396.

It's the guy who didn't play an AFL game until he was close to 30?

And he's in a tie for 19th in our goalkicking this year. Should we bring back Modra as well?

I agree with your point overall, but Scott Hodges has the second highest goals per game average in AFC history. His biggest struggle at AFL level came from within his own club - once Modra burst onto the scene there was no spot for him.
