I think it's disappointing that we recuit players and never play them, even when they are the last man standing. If we don't have the faith to play them at that stage, don't recuit them in the first place.
With Smack & JJ injured, surely we could give him one game for the season.
I would be happy to see one of our rookie ruckman get a game. We won't be able to get by with Jacobs alone.

I think some are forgetting Lobbe is a far better and fitter player than this time last year. Sauce has gone the other way, he'll need a hand. Plus if Port go with the Hoff or Spudgrove as ther 2nd ruck its a perfect opportunity to jump into them.

I wouldn't say that Kurtze has over taken him. I think Graham plays a better forward/ruck role than what Kurtze can.

He has taken some very good marks as a key forward but I'm very sceptical if he can transfer that to the AFL.

Maybe the club wants to develop Grahams forward play ?

I don't mind a tall player pinch hitting in the ruck (actually, I hate it, but when all of your other options have dried up it's better than trying to turn Graham into a mobile second ruck) but why Talia? He's one of our most important players structurally. Why wouldn't we take, say, Henderson or someone like that to pinch hit in that role?

Wouldn't want either of them in the ruck, as you've mentioned, Talia is far too important to have playing in the ruck and Hendo would get injured far too easily in the ruck. Rather have another midfielder in the ruck then either of those two options. I'm sure Danger would be willing to give it a crack! :D

Edit: How would Otten go in the ruck? He's only listed as 194cm tall (Stevens was 195cm when we used to send him in) and I'm not sure what his jump is like compared to other players. But being a player that was a midfielder in the SANFL earlier in his career at the Crows, it wouldn't be the worst way to work him into the midfield (although haven't seen him talked as a midfielder in some time now). Not sure he'd provide much in the rucks contests, hopefully just enough to make sure it isn't an easy tap out but possibly give us someone a little more mobile around the ground that would make up for that? Don't like it that much and possibly similar to cmndstab's Hendo decision, just every time I see Hendo in a contest he seems to come off worse for wear so I couldn't imagine him in the ruck! :p

Henderson would be a good alternative. I was trying to think of our tall options. I don't see Lynch, LJ or Rutten being given the job - so that left me with Talia. I didn't consider the possibility of Henderson doing it. He has a good leap and is reasonably tall - there are definitely worse alternatives available.:thumbsu:

But my defence of playing Graham is he is only replacing McKernan so what have we got to lose --- a few frees given away -
missed shots right in front -- a few stupid errors -- jump up in mid air nowhere the ball or opposing ruckman at centre bounce . I am sure Graham can stand around looking at the play or his opponent taking a mark and running off him.
To recreate our forward line and use Johnston as decent target we either need Graham to spend time down there or switch Talia or Truck up forward.

Surely we can find a better replacement for McKernan, even if it's bringing in an extra midfielder instead. Why replace one non-existent player with another?

Yes would be a real gamble but we have stretch their defence somehow as after Chaplin and Trengove they are small now with Jonas out suspended . With Hartigan doing ok and Truck return might be able to switch him or Talia down there.
But prefer a gamble on Graham than have Petrenko down there again who poses even less threat and still have someone to help Jacobs out.

I doubt Petrenko will be playing this week anyway.

I only see 3 changes in our future.
OUT: JJ (inj), McKernan (inj), Hartigan (omit)
IN: LJ, Dangerfield, Rutten

Tambling drops out if McKernan gets up. I can't see them making more than 3 changes this week. I'd love to see Grigg & Kerridge back in the team, but I don't see them making 4 changes - let alone 5.

Why?

Jacobs is capable of rucking for 80% of the game, or more. He has rucked 100% before. So, potentially we're talking about bringing in a player who is only functioning for at most 20% of the game (assuming he's pretty much a dead loss in any other position). Effectively, we'd be down a player for 80% of the game.

Is playing Talia in the ruck, for 10-15% of the game, going to hurt us as much as being a man down for 80% of the game? I doubt it. Particularly when you consider Port's backup ruck options, which aren't that crash hot to begin with.

Vader remind me to never talk about team structures or list management with you ever again. You clearly have little idea what you are talking about.

The main issue I have with the idea of playing "an extra midfielder" as a ruckman is that that extra midfielder is going to get absolutely smashed to pieces.

Imagine spending your day jumping into/wrestling with a huge ruckman 60 or more times in a match. And then you're expected to help win the ball around the contests even though the other team's ruckman will be able to hand it to his teammates on a silver platter, all while bruising the shit out of you.

All day long the opposition ruckman will have no tall opponent, so he will be used as a target time and time again while you are unable to do anything about it.

Yeah, in the mean time the team has a (probably) faster midfielder able to provide another outside target, but there is absolutely no way this makes up for getting destroyed in the hitouts and allowing the opposition ruckman to put them to advantage more often.

It is 100% clear that you must play ruckmen in the ruck, if you are able to. If you are not able to, then you're most likely screwed, but your backup must only be an inch or two off ruck height, and must spend minimal gametime actually rucking. Any more than that and you're just asking for trouble.

Play no ruckman and 4 mids...

Or try and find a solution that works, I dont know. I'm sick of 2013.

cmndstab - nobody is talking about having a non-ruckman go at it all day. My suggestion of using a pinch hitter, instead of replacing McKernan with Graham, is still predicated on Jacobs rucking for the majority of the game. I'm talking about employing a pinch hitter to do 10-15% of the ruck work, not 100%. I also started by looking at the tallest non-ruckmen in our team, rather than asking a midfielder to do the job.

I'm pretty sure a couple of people were, or was that a different thread?

A good move.
What his talking about often only applies in a vacuum simulator, he does spend most of his time in space after all.
Lot's of assumptions made that people are actually talking the same subject, not a lot of imagination mostly reductionist philosophy.
I just don't reply when the point has been completely missed.

Johncock doing it all by himself in the Port Magpies forward line... Kicked every single goal for them against Norwood tonight... both of them -

Norwood 13.5 83
Port 2.8 20

Was it raining alot in Adelaide tonight?

Norwood looking good for back to back?

It's cold, but not raining.

Rained during the second quarter.

Stiffy has let himself go already and he's still playing, imagine what he will look like in a year. Used his body well to jag a couple of goals.

I'm biased but hopefully yes will be back to back. Doing well considering injuries and the number of juniors playing.
