porps played pretty well in the midfield today, but it wasn't exactly a struggle for us. got close to 30 touches and a handful of clearances, inside 50's and tackles.

played without any shoulder strapping too interestingly.

Jono Beech would have to be looked at for AFL wouldnt he?

I dont think Porp will get back into the Crows.

Looking at today and who they are playing next week. Smack for Petrenko is likely to be the only change. Possibly Talia if his cork doesnt come up, but that would be Porps only shot.
 
Osborn did some nice hitouts in the 1st Q in Debut for the Doggies. Seems to take a couple seconds to make a decision with his 2nd efforts. Lyons a couple nice touches, but a little quiet. Around the ball but just not getting the breaks. Josh Glenn for Centrals was impressive. Very neat skilled, has good pace and composure. Would fill Smith's spot well allowing Smith to play further up the ground.

Like Jolly, think hes worth a late pick. Lyons getting plenty of it but isnt/cant work hard enough for mine. Hopefully if he hangs around we can get him super fit over pre season. Osborn pretty good on debut.

Jolly doesn't look too skinny and they seemed to suggest he was bigger earlier in the season. It isn't affecting his performance too much though. After a slightly quiet 1st quarter, Lyons has been pretty good. A lot classier with ball in hand than nearly everyone else out there. Osborn made a couple good chases and even manage to catch a wingman. :eek:
 
13 clearances for Lyons?

I bet Sandlewood's just itching to get him back in for some more vest-laden positionless small forward games.
 
Lyons had a pretty good game in the end with 30 touches and 13 clearances. Probably should've got 2 shots on goal dead in front if the umpires rewarded his tackles, when Centrals players blatantly tried to take him on and failed. Osborn started slowly, but improved as the game went on. Showed some good signs.

He doesn't have the tank to play significant midfield minutes. He can barely manage a whole game as a forward. What do expect Sando to do? Have him as a liability for half the game?

Look, I really like Lyons, but like Petrenko, he doesn't have the tank to spend a full game in the midfield, and outside of one game hasn't offered a lot up forward. Outside of the Collingwood game he's kicked one goal. I'd still have him in the side over Petrenko, and probably Wright, but its stupid for people to go on about how he should get more midfield minutes when he's so visibly struggling with the workload as he is.

His fitness/endurance is an obvious problem which is unfortunate because he has such elite clearance skills.
I think that Douglas should give him whatever fitness regime he carried out since last season.

Yes, Lyons is too slow unfit and has poor disposal skills. He must be very lucky however given the ball falls into his hand 30 odd times a match at Glenelg.

First we heard that Crouch wasn't ready for AFL at the start of the season and needed to spend some more time at Westies :rolleyes:, then it was Kerridge was tired after his BOG performance (didn't look that tired yesterday), then it was Grigg that was too slow.

Last year Lynch was too slow to ever make it as an AFL footballer and Brown that was not ready.

In the meantime we have pumped games into Dogga, Stiffy, Porps and Nutta.

Whenever Lyons has been played in the midfield for the Crows he has looked good.

There is a massive difference between the intensity of an SANFL match and and an AFL match. Lyons is a very good midfielder, and obviously is dominant at SANFL level in the midfield. But have you watched him play in the AFL? He tires pretty quickly, its obvious. Obviously this can and hopefully will be fixed as he gets better, but its pointless denying this. And he isn't quick, and his disposal isn't great. Just because he's a promising young player doesn't mean the flaws in his game can't be pointed out. He has a number of attributes that make him promising, but there are problems.

Kerridge looked very tired and sore in the two games before he was dropped, and he only had 10 touches in each, with minimal impact. Its been 15 weeks, if he was still tired you'd be questioning what was wrong with him, how do you know he'd be playing this well without the break? Its his second year, he doesn't need to play every game to develop.
Same with Crouch. He doesn't need to play every game, and if there are things he needs to work on, he should be made to work on them.

As for Brown, he was a first year small defender who was physically very slight. He probably wasn't ready, and we managed him well by giving him 3 games, just so he knew what was required. He wasn't dominating the SANFL last year, he was solid. His improvement this year shows that he was handled fine, he didn't need to be forced to play AFL before he was ready.

Fair enough, yet another Sando sycophant.

Every time a developing player has been given a decent chance (love the way we dropped Grigg after the Port match) to give Porps and others yet another chance, there were always plenty of guys like you trying to justify it.

Grigg wasn't dropped after the port match. He played the next week, and was he was a late withdrawal after failing to recover from a hip injury the following week. What are you talking about? Why blatantly lie in an effort to push your point? You haven't actually argued any of the points I made, you just accused me of blindly following what the coach says when you just made up your own bullsh*t to follow it up. If you're gonna contribute something you should at least have a vague idea what you're talking about.

I absolutely don't agree with all the selections this year. I would have given Kedge one more game before he was dropped, and I would have brought Grigg and Kerridge into the squad earlier than that. They've shown a lot of faith in Brown, Laird and Lynch, and haven't dropped them even when their form hasn't been the best.
 
Of the players currently playing SANFL this weekend I'm only really interested in the form of Lyons, Ellis-Yolman and Siggins. The rest...meh

It doesn't make someone a Sando sycophant just because they agree with Lyons non-selection. He hasn't played that well at AFL level. Fair enough that some senior players like Mackay and Porplyzia haven't either but they are completely different roles to an inside mid. We have half a dozen of those playing well at AFL level and in my view were rightly selected infront of Lyons (who wasn't playing that well).

I haven't been a massive fan of Sando's selections this year, but I do think we underestimate on this board how difficult it is to get a team of 20 year olds to do what you want. It certainly hasn't gone well for Melbourne.

Also, if these blokes come in and play well, doesn't it mean they've been managed well? We all seem to point to it a reason they should have been playing for us when they we still in primary school. . .
