Received a couple of bottles of that stuff myself as birthday presents and I have to say it was an enjoyable drop.

But then again my usual favourite is Jim Beam so my taste isn't the most refined :oops:

Been enjoying some Hellyers Road this week.

Has an unusual flavour. Almost like almonds. Not really one for the purists, but allright for chilling out on a weeknight and reading about your club falling apart.

Oban 14 is usually my house scotch. Sweet and rich and malty good.

Macallan 18 is probably my fave though....
 
Had this bottle of Hellyers Rd 10 year for a few weeks now, and I've come to the conclusion that it's probably not worth finishing. Drunk about half of it, but it just tastes strange. Kind of like almonds. Not much like whisky.

Not on my recommend list.

I did recently invest in a bottle of Lagavullin 16 year and that is definitely on my recommend list. Very peaty. A Scotch you have when what you want is a Scotch and nothing but a Scotch. I suspect if I was a more experienced taster I'd appreciate it even more.

So this week I've topped up my supply with a bottle of Cragganmore 12, which I haven't had before. Mild tasting scotch, some maltiness, some sweetness, not much peatiness. Pretty good for chilling out after a week at work.

Last week I was at a (faux) Irish pub and feeling extravagant, so I ordered a glass of the Macallan Amber. The barperson looked a little anxious at anyone spending $25 on a shot of anything, but I can tell you it's well worth the price. Wonderful dry sherry aroma that complements the fruity, vanilla flavour. Brilliant.

I'm still on a voyage of discovery to figure out what type of whisky fan I am. I think the journey might be more fun than the destination.

Having my first taste of the Glenmorangie Lastana this evening.

Has the fruitiness and slight spiciness you expect from whisky matured in sherry casks. Not quite as aromatic as you'd imagine, but fairly strong on the palate. There's a slight sense of overripeness in the flavour but you get over it after a couple of sips. Interesting without being overpowering. A good Scotch for mellowing out.

Funnily enough, I was tossing up between that and Oban for my weekend tipple. Both on special. Went with the Oban.

Good to hear both Ironmonger and dlanod mention Dalwhinney. It is definitely my favourite Scotch, but probably one of the mildest (as in non-peaty/smokey) Scotch whiskys. It has very pleasant honey flavour, but for all its mildness has a lasting aftertaste.

The whisky aficionados will have just a half-teaspoon of water to bring out the flavour, but I prefer a couple of ice-cubes so it starts off strong then mellows as the ice melts. I've actually visited the Dalwhinney distillery - it's reputed to be the highest in Scotland, and run by only a handful of people.

Usually try to pick up a couple of litre bottles coming into Aust in duty-free, but these days there's not a hell of a lot of savings over Dan Murphys.

One interesting thing I noticed coming back into Australia today is that the airline duty free stores can be pretty impressively priced. Example, for Scotch: http://acdutyfree.com/glenlivet-year-single-malt-scotch-p-425.html vs https://www.syddutyfree.com/categor...the-glenlivet-12-year-old-malt-whisky-1-litre. That way you don't need to worry about having enough time to get stuff sent to gate, etc, because of Australia's dumb extra security arrangements.

I read that first URL as acudutyfree and thought acuguy had changed occupations and beverage preferences
