I actually prefer bourbon to scotch so I've tried their bourbon. It's actually ok for the price, and I would personally rather drink it than jim beam. My main criticism of it is that it's quite light tasting and finishes quite short. It's fine for mixing though.

I reckon cheap scotch is worse than cheap bourbon though.

What is it called? For a minute I thought you were speaking of the Costco brand bourbon which is actually sourced from Beam. There are good cheap scotches and there are good cheap bourbons. Many cheap scotches are still ok neat, though I couldn't drink Beam White that way. Beam products I drink neat are the bonded, the rye and the Old Grand Dad range (have to look for this as it isn't officially carried in Australia). I'm sure the black is fine, but it has been sometime. The Old Grand Dad range uses the same mashbill as Basil Haydens (Beam has two mashbills as far as I'm aware - the aforementioned one for rye heavy bourbons, the other for everything else Beam including the old favourite, Old Crow).

Aldi bourbon is called bluegrass. Packaged similarly to jim beam, if you've ever seen Fraser briggs one of their beers, like that is a cheap rip off of James boags premium.

Jim beam black isn't what it used to be. Old crow is no longer available in Australia afaik (probably because it was better than jbw). They also cut the strength of makers mark.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the starward. Very different to other aus whisky I've had

Again, not scotch, but really enjoying Gentleman Jack of late. I'm not usually a Jack Daniels fan either - think it's overpriced for what it is.

Single Barrel and Silver Select are also worth your while too.

And the other limited edition one? (43% tastes like Jack used to before they cut it down to 40%)

Thanks might pick up some Single Barrel sometime. I like American whiskey :thumbsu:

Love JD as an everyday drinker but don't like GJ. Silver Select or Single Barrel for me. George Dickel no 12 too.

Elijah Craig 10 is worth the money too

12 year old? Think it has recently lost its age statement. 18 year old is sensational, though price these days has become too high in light of bourbon boom.

What do people like from the bottom shelf? I like alcohol too much to get quality stuff all the time. :$

Teachers and J&B for me.

Teachers is ok. No J&B for me - don't like it. To be honest, I'll buy Johnny Black if I'm swigging scotch with no regard for anything but getting a buzz.

New to scotch game myself. Had a good go of a few over last couple of weekends. A Spey Side 12 yr single malt which I found quite agreeable and also some Dalwhinnie 15 yr single malt that I thought was delicious.
Tried a local in the Hellyers Rd 10 yr. I didn't rate this one at all. Was a bit much. Don't know if it's no good or if my palate isn't up to it yet as the first two were said as good beginners whiskey.
Also can any of you recommend some quality Irish whiskey? Want to get in to them on genetic grounds. Don't mind a Jameson but haven't had much past that

Got a bottle of JW Double Black for my birthday a few months back.
I'm not a normal JW Black fan.
The double black is smoky and is very bloody nice I must say.
I have a few top shelf single malts in my bar, but this is a nice Friday night drink.

Try Teeling. Woolworths import it and is readily found in Dan Murphy's.

I went to the Sydney whisky show yesterday and tried 51 different whiskies.

Highlights were the Balvenie 21yo Portwood, Glenglassaugh Revival, BenRiach cask strength, Douglas Laing Scallywag, Glendalough Mountain Strength Poitin and the fact that I was totally plastered when Norf thumped Carlton.:drunk:

Must be feeling a little worse for wear today...
