bought a bottle of JW 18yo the day my son was born, only 14 more years till we can open it together!

This thread is making me thirsty

I just started out 3 weeks back, I've navigated my way around a couple of bottles of blends now (Chivas 12, Johnny Walker Double Black, Bailie Nicol Jarvie, Glenmoor - cheap aldi stuff)

Only have one single malt, the cheap old Glen Moray without any age information - struggling to enjoy it to be honest.

Does anybody have any suggestions? Would be greatly appreciated. It seems I absolutely love intense smoke but I'm still learning. I was planning on moving on a bottle of Glenfiddich 12 for $50, Glenkinchie 12 for $61 or Glenlivet 12 for $55.
 
None of those are particularly intense with the smokey flavour. Glenfiddich in particular is quite light.

Glenkinchie is quite nice though. Nice full flavour to it.
 
Went to that Burranows (spelling) bar last Friday. Great range of whisk(e)y and for smokers, cigars. On the corner of Glenferrie and Burwood. It's a 'club' so cigars can be smoked inside. If you dislike cigar smoke, avoid. Great service (table) and some nice beer (Sierra Nevada PA, Murray's Wild Thing) as well. A lot of Ardbeg there.

THis is one great collection. Top 4 there are some of my favs. The only omission would be Bowmore 15 or 18
 
I went along to a whisky tasting at World of Whisky in Double Bay last weekend and tried some great - and not so great - whiskies. The Overeem Sherry Cask Finish, from Tasmania, and Redbreast 12yo, an Irish Single Pot Still whiskey, were the standouts. The Arran 10yo was also good and has been added to my 'to buy' list.

The Overeem, in particular, was amazing. I can't believe a distiller that's only been in production since 2007 can produce something that good. It is going to be a staple in my drinks cabinet for years.

I'm heading overseas next month and am planning how to use my 2L duty free allowance. I'm thinking Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or and something from MacAllan. Or maybe an older style Glenfiddich or Highland Park.

Depends where you're buying. Unless you're buying bottom shelf, most whisky in Australian duty free is about the same price as retail stores. The only attraction in Australian duty free is the sometimes availability of product exclusive to the duty free market. I usually buy overseas (got some great American whiskey in Singapore last time) and bring it back in. Shanghai in August, so I expect to be able to get some good stuff there.
 
The only real value at Duty Free is the twin packs of spirits, i usually pick up something like the below to stock the liquor cabinet for cocktails.

Yeah, I've done a bit of research and a rule of thumb for duty free single malt seems to be that the price is the same but you'll get 1L instead of 700mL. Not great, but better than nothing.
 
Caol ila 12yo and Laphroaig 10 for the odd treat/special occasion. Also pick up a bottle of Johnny Green when it's on special at Dan Murphy. I reckon it's the pick of the JW range. Everyday thank-god-its-5.30 scotch is Glen Moray/Glenlivet/Chivas, although I might give the baillie nichol jarvie a go after reading this thread.
