Selection for a team in India is pretty easy imo. Must play two spinners. With Henriques in the team, you only need two quicks:
Warner
Cowan
Hughes
Clarke
A batsman who can play spin
Henriques
Paine/Hartley+ (a keeper who can keep to spin)
O'Keefe
Pattinson
Siddle/Bird
Lyon

Maxwell wasn't that horrendous tbh sure he got out for crap all but he didn't look too bad whilst he was in and tried to use his feet to the spinners. Not sure he is a test batsmen though.
Him and Quiney could produce the best looking partnership of all time thenMaxwell wasn't that horrendous tbh sure he got out for crap all but he didn't look too bad whilst he was in and tried to use his feet to the spinners. Not sure he is a test batsmen though.

Why "Must play two spinners"? We're flat out finding one who is good enough. Where is this second spinner coming from and what is his name?
Their names are Lyon and O'Keefe/Beer. Most touring spinners in India have a tough time (Warne's figures there are pretty mediocre), but they're still necessary because of the nature of the conditions there.
Oh, ok. So even though they usually get smashed we should still pick them because of the conditions.
The conditions are irrelevant if we don't actually have a spinner who can bowl with control.
All three can bowl with control.
All three can bowl with control.
Lyon bowled with control all of the Australian summer.I didn't mention Maxwell or Doherty. I said O'Keefe and Beer, both of whom bowl with control. When was the last time any of Lyon, Maxwell and Doherty bowled with control for any more than one over in a row? I can bowl with control too, every now and then. Should I play for Australia?

Indeed.Or a spinner who bowls to the conditions, to be more exact. Lyon bowled like he was bowling in Australia. He's in India. So he got smashed.
Still seems nuts they pick a spinner like lyon out of obscurity, he then exceeds all expectations and takes 60 wickets@32 leading into this series he then gets belted by a rampaging dhoni in one test and bang he's done.
Did this selection group not see what the last lot did to haurtiz?
You don't judge your spinners long term prospects on a few innings in india, a place where shane warne was made to look like a park cricketer.
Well said. When I started this thread, I was arguing that Doherty should have been selected as well as Lyon, not instead of him!
As Gerard Whateley said on Offsiders this morning, this tour has been a spectacularly well planned disaster.
