If he lifts his shoulder the onus is on the pissweak tackler to lock him down correctly. So he can't lift his shoulder. Problem solved.

Many here instead suggesting rewarding s**t players for s**t tackles, or expect Joel to not evade the tackle and get caught holding the ball. I wonder if they realize how stupid they sound

That’s fine he’s got every right to break the tackle. Just don’t give him a free for it.

Unfortunately its been lumped in with ducking into tackles (shuey, christensen) and diving ( thomas, poupolo). But they are all very different.
So what are you trying to say here, Selwood is fine but Shuey, Christensen, thomas and puopolo are not?. Now there is the classic "One eyed supporter". Jeez.

We have seen something like Selwood.

And his name is Billy Picken.

Between 1974 and 1983, Picken received 709 free kicks. Yes, that's right, 709. And he played 207 games in that 10-year span, compared to Selwood's 225 between 2010-2019.

The mandatory high free kick for Selwood was fairly predictable, but always felt he at least earnt them.

Noone though compares to that little s**t McLean from the dogs. Going into the 2016 GF we discussed whether his mandatory arm raising free kicks would be a deciding factor....are we allowed to even touch the guy ? Yepp. It happened on cue. As predictable as it ever gets.

Funny how his career has gone since his "talent" was highlighted.

He doesn't duck, he leads with his head. More stupid than brave.

He lifts his arm no doubt. The free should be based on where the tackle starts, not where it ends. Its hard to see in a split second so the umpires should use commonsense and not pay these frees to known arm raisers and knee droppers. Everyone knows who they are.

Great player still, but he'd be greater if he didn't carry on like a pork chop when he doesn't get a dubious free kick.
If that was the rule players would deliberately develop tackle techniques that involved ripping players heads off.

But no one to the extent and length of time that Selwood has. That’s the difference

Every player who is tackled around the neck or head throws their head back. Selwood at least keeps playing on as umpires often dont give him frees he deserves. Most players just stop and assume they will get the free.

This isn't really an unusual number for the era, TBH.

If you look back at the numbers, it wasn't unusual for teams to "earn" 35+ frees each in a game in the '70s and early '80s, which is nearly double what is awarded today, despite far more closely contested and stoppage situations in today's footy.

So now he’s hard done by from the umps?? Imagine if he wasn’t!! Would have close to 1000 free kicks lmao

And we all thought the game was over umpired today.

Free kick numbers have declined over the years, going down in the mid 1990s, on average there are 25 - 30% less free kicks today, as compared with the 1970s.

Note here that Selwood is the only player to have played post 1996 on this list.

1970 - 1979 there were 108,500 free kicks given.

Ian Nankervis from your mob got 743 free kicks 1970 - 1979, Don Scott had 680 as you said.

By contrast 2010 - 2019 there were 76,627 frees given.

So trying to bring up Don Scott as a "much greater rate" is a farce, as Don Scott only had 9.3% more frees than Selwood, compared to the 29.4% more free kicks in the period of 1970 - 1979 as compared to this decade.

Selwood is at a far greater standard deviation.
Did you factor in the three extra games each round?

So have we established that Selwood is a cheat, and that Geelong fans are swimming in a river of denial? I think so.

I remember how the apologist commentators (Ling, Der-Wayne) would praise him for “drawing a free kick”, and the rearguard action to protect his gaming the system for as long as possible.

Can’t wait for this blight on the game to retire.
