On February 17 the mighty Grunk Denham said the Hawks' Achilles' heel, if they've got one, is Max Bailey. Today with the reality that Bailey is out for half a season, Grunk called the loss of Bailey a "hiccup." What has changed in a mere twenty-seven days of pre-season to turn a heel into a hiccup? Well, he didn't say.

Could not agree more with you. RSN with Christian and McGuane is great to listen to in the morning. A good mix of all sports without mindless waffle.

The only shows I can listen to now on SEN are KB with Turfy and I can take some of Finey, but the rest is absolute horse poo.

Their format at SEN is tired and dated.

I've gone from SEN to Sport 927 (or RSN) for the mornings. Better discussion & they spend more time on it.

Maher & Watson are so self-absorbed & talk too much waffle.

Plus 927 doesn't do the normal breakfast format of filling the hour with news till 8 minutes past the hour, ads and more ads, traffic, weather, promotions, etc.....

I listen to Francis on Grandstand on Monday and Friday mornings.

Other than that, I switch between SEN and RSN. Can't stand Watson or McGuane

I was listening to Matty Lloyd on AW before. He was saying he was hard on Essendon, as a critic, despite his status. I was thinking "Yeah, because Knights was there, you won't give any s*** to Hird, whenever it's reasonble".

It got me thinking, now that Lloydy has jumped off to AW, do you think any of the presenters on the station, especially Finey, feel like flogs now for defending him so hard when Knights completely destroyed him?

Hungry for TIGERLAND​

I applaud Richmond for giving Damien Hardwick a two-year contract extension. Anyone with footy smarts can see the club is on the rise. Hardwick has not put a foot wrong in his development of talent, like Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin, Tyrone Vickery, and Alex Rance, are examples of a coach who knows what he wants. Hawthorn greats, David Parkin and Dermot Brereton both acknowledge Hardwick has done a good job but question the timing of the extension, and was it necessary? What it means to Richmond players and supporters, is Hardwick has the full confidence of the club to not deviate from his style and direction. Coaches are no different from any other individual, they’re always portrayed as having a tough exterior but they are not bullet proof. They too have families and concerns for the future. Hardwick has now been given peace of mind, but also, a clear mandate – he is the man.

Wow, a clear mandate? Well, that “mandate” won’t mean jack to one of the most rabid fanbases in AFL football if things happen to go the normal Richmond way. But that’s not worrying KB today as all things is all good at Tigerland. Forget the NAB Cup with the undefeated pre-season stars being Adelaide and West Coast because the March Champions have been declared: Richmond Football Club. So pop the corks on the Tiger tequila for a morning Mango Margarita, as KB is joined by that journalist ghoul with venom, Grunk Denham.

Grunk thinks the timing of signing Hardwick is perfect and Richmond is all about 2013/2014 and beyond. KB uses the Alistair Clarkson situation last year evidence that the Tigers made a good move eradicating the coaching distraction this year. “I think quite clearly everyone in football can see Damien Hardwick has done a good job,” declares the former Tigers’ player, coach, and re-born cheerleader. … That coaching extension only leaves McKenna and Sheedy as coming out of contract. Grunk says McKenna will probably get a two-year deal and it may be done within days. The GWS position will be left up to Sheedy and what the GWS board thinks, which tells us absolutely nothing.

After that brief discussion – it’s talkback. … Tiger love from the start as the first prediction is Hardwick getting the Tiges into the eight and showing Essendon their mistake by not appointing him their coach. Grunk starts waffling until KB interjects to defend the ex-coach who played his first game under then-Tigers coach, Kevin Bartlett.

KB: I’ll always stick up for Matthew Knights here, Barry. Matthew Knights actually made the finals in his first year and the Bombers hadn’t played finals, I think under Sheeds for probably two or three years. So Matthew Knights made the finals … there’s a lot of young kids coming through now which Essendon people are getting very, very excited about that Matthew Knights actually gave the first opportunity to. And went down that track of recruiting those players so, I think Matthew Knights gets a hard deal, I think, from a lot of Essendon fans.

Defend Knights if you must KB but ask the average Dons fan about him and you’ll get epithets about the whole ill-gotten tenure until flight control punted his yellow and black backside down Napier Street. … Grunk returns to his interrupted spiel about the wonders of Hardwick’s improvement which, of course, was “evident already in the NAB Cup.” … So now the pair stay on Essendon as Grunk refers to an article in his paper about Patty Ryder being very, very, close to agreeing to terms on a two-year deal that will remove him from the grasp of GWS and Michael Hurley’s prospective (read very, very, very close) signing being common knowledge, as the agent said he would be surprised if Hurley left and very confident of him staying, and there was talk of a four-year deal … KB interjects cutting Grunk off again.

KB: But hang on, we’ve had about three stories already on Michael Hurley, that he’s about to sign, he’s going to sign, he’s about to sign-
Grunk: No. no. No, I think, no, no-

KB: There was one the other day in the Herald Sun saying there was something to do with image, the image of players, that’s the only hold up. So-
Grunk: Nah, Robbo wrote that. Robbo wrote-

KB: It seems to be taking quite a while for Hurley to actually sign doesn’t it?
Gunk: Robbo pointed that out in his story earlier this month that, you know, there was just a few little hiccups with CBA things and I think they’re minor things such as, you know, your image and etcetera, etcetera. But, ah, I think the club, I think the club’s pushing for five years, I’m not sure … Hurley would probably accept four.

KB: Five years?
Grunk: But I’m pretty sure it’s getting there. It’s gonna be close to five years. Yeah, so ah, I’m pretty sure that he will stay but whatever happens, Ryder will be done first-

KB: How many years for Ryder?
Grunk: Two or three. So, that, as I said-

KB: Why not five years for Ryder?
Grunk: Well, no, different age, different, different-

KB: Well he’s only twenty-three isn’t he, Ryder?
Grunk: Ahh, well he’s older than Hurley I know that. But, no, two or three years is fine. That, that’s great. So I think the Bombers are in; now the Bombers, it’s interesting, the Bombers are yet to lose a player to Gold Coast or GWS, and I don’t think they will now. So I think they’ve done very well to keep their stars.

Hmm, let’s hope in this case that “hiccups” don’t do the opposite of Grunk’s opinion of Max Bailey and turn into an Essendon Achilles’ Heel. It seems close enough is good enough for Grunk who is clearly not going to make the Fevola “won’t happen” mistake again. Dons’ players are all locked up and sealed, but there kinda not quite signed up yet, kind of thing.

Back to Tiger talkback and the new Tiger folk hero with only one name – Deledio! … Is he signed, asks the caller? … KB’s concerned but Grunk thinks Richmond is confident he’ll remain at Punt Road. Grunk says the following: “Everything’s a concern until you sign on the dotted line, isn’t it. You know, as I said, with Bastinac at North Melbourne, etcetera; Hurley is still a concern until he actually, uh, uh, the documentation is completed and in the hands of the AFL.” … Yes, Grunk, so what’s with the nearly- almost-close articles you blokes keep writing? … Grunk doesn’t think Deledio is going anywhere and the Hardwick extension has possibly enhanced the chances of him staying.


An excited KB now interviews Damien Hardwick. Let’s see if we can find some progressive, contemporary, coach-speak that may seem at odds with the once tough Don-Port defender: “a period of sustained success” gets a mention … “believe in the journey that we’re on” and I reach for my own Mango Margarita … “going forward” has me leaning back with a frown … and “robust discussion” has me vomiting that margarita right back up.

Score alert: After speaking to Hardwick, KB now feels conservative about his standing prediction of a Richmond winning margin of 108 points against Carlton in round one. He’s increased it to 120 points.

Back to talkback and an alleged Carlton supporter (you never know with radio) gives appreciation for Hardwick stating there’s not a cliché to be heard and KB agrees suggesting that may be part of the appeal because there is a lot of clichés in football such as “on the right track,” “going through the process.” Nah, he never used any clichés, as I continue to clean up my vomit! … Grunk is not happy “with a couple of the newer coaches that have come in this year. They seem to stand up and talk like they’ve been around for three or four years.” Whoa, a back-hander to Mark Neeld if ever there was one from the Dees-hating venomous Denham.

KB quips that most football fans will be starting to see Richmond as favourites for round one … Next is a familiar SEN Tigers fan who’s excited about the membership, good news, and the team’s gonna be one of the big four again. KB reminds Grunk that Richmond supporters never get ahead of themselves but reiterates his concern over the non-signing of Deledio … This time a legit-sounding Blues’ fan asks KB for his serious prediction of round one based on Carlton’s pre-season.

KB: I think the Tigers will beat the Blues. I’m very confident about the Tigers beating the blues in round one. Carlton’s pre-season hasn’t been very good … I think even Carlton fans have got to acknowledge that. A lot of things have gone wrong with injuries and missing the first game, and some coming back, and it’s been a difficult pre-season for Carlton. …

Grunk stays on the fence and says it will be closer than people think. So edgy is the Grunkster.

Prospective punter wants KB to talk the Tiges up even more so he can cash in on the Blues in the opener for 2012 … Usual clueless Grand Prix discussion temporarily diverts from Tigers-Blues gabfest … Collingwood fan Jake from Greensborough gets things back on the straight and narrow circuit by complaining about Richmond supporters as the season hasn’t even started and KB reminds Jake that “we never get ahead of ourselves at Tigerland. We’re realists at Tigerland.” A wretched pre-season for Collingwood too, proffers KB to the disgruntled Pies fan … Grunk clarifies his earlier whack for new blowhard coaches by extricating Nathan Buckley from that bracket. Just more hard evidence that he’s whacking the Dees’ coach. … Grunk adds his concern for St. Kilda’s defence. It’s good these fellas don’t put much value on the pre-season.

It’s got to be close to 10 O’clock as the next Richmond fan believes other supporters hate Richmond because they’re worried about what happens when Richmond do become strong. KB warms to this suggesting they’ll more Tigers fans at round one and there’s more passion indicated by 2012 membership sales and he lauds the caller for being very good. At this point I am disappointed to be flat out of mangos and tequila … Now some belated Blues push back:

KB: I’m going fantastic today.
Tony: I bet you are. The comments you just made earlier, I nearly ran up the car’s arse in front of me. Look, year in year out, you keep lauding this group … but every year you fall flat on your face. You end up looking like Dick Tracy.

KB: No, no, no. Last year, don’t forget the Tigers led at three-quarter time last year. …
Tony: The end result, KB. Look, Carlton haven’t won a game this year and I guarantee you the time comes we’re gonna play you in that first round, nothing’s gonna change.

KB: Well, I tell you what, Tony from Taylors Lakes, give me a call after the first round I’d love to have a conversation with you. Do you hate Richmond because you fear them?
Tony: I don’t hate Richmond, KB, but you’ve got a passionate dislike for Carlton. All over these years you’ve just got a dislike for Carlton.
Grunk: We’ll you’ve hit the nail on the head there. There’s no doubt about that, Tone.
KB: I admire Carlton!
Grunk: Well you don’t sound like it.

Certainly he doesn’t sound like it. Only fourteen more sleeps until KB is wrong yet again or Richmond’s 31st rebirth kicks into overdrive. Don’t let us down Blue Baggers! By the way, Crows and Eagles that are in the NAB Cup final never cracked a mention which should indicate first 2012 TV blockbuster in the Melbourne market for Channel Seven.
