The problem is that the only people who can be bothered to fill in the old fashioned ratings books on which the radio ratings are gathered are mostly your old age pensioners with nothing better to do, your stay at home mums and the unemployed. Not exactly SEN's target demographic I would have thought !!!!

Of course this audience is great for a staion like 3AW so I would imagine they would be fighting to keep the existing system.

Radio ratings also do not include people who listen in cars, listen whilst walking/jogging or who listen via the net at work.

Someone once mentioned here that the ratings for the sports station in the UK went through the roof once they abandoned the old fashioned ratings book and went to an electronic way of measuring the listening audience.

Your true figure is much higher than the ratings indicate and if I had a product and an advertising budget I would have no hesitation in advertising on SEN mainly because you would be getting great value for money - ie paying less per slot than what you should.

So, then, the people who are at home during the day are the only ones who count to the ratings? How many people sit at home during the day and listen to the radio? No, not many in SEN's demo, I wouldn't think, either. So, it probably fair to assume that most of our ratings are actually about 15-20. :)

Exactly.

you can bag the ratings system all you want but it didnt stop sen pumping themselves up last time the results came out so it works both ways

great post from the equalizer, sen got very cheap during the holidays and it bit them on the ass

When the ratings are good the system works when they are bad the system is not true.
Blah Blah Wank Wank cant have it both ways it is true when the football was going along nicely Sen had every person saying what good ratings we have Blah Blah and now the whole system is wrong.
The ratings system has to be wrong how could 3AW be number one again.

Both fair enough points.

I have spoken to a few who work at Sen some on the air and others who work behind the scenes on shows and a few all say the same thing.
The mgt have had so many managers who just dont have the guts or smarts to make the hard call when it is overdue.
The ratings were so bad but they still showed a few truths
Run Home least affected by ratings and best show on Sen
Doran huge drop in ratings and long overdue to be sent on his way
KB and some of his old fogeys just to old now sam thing been going on for years he and the Patrick Smiths etc
Billy not needed at Sen unless they start a big wheel promotion at footy clubs bring him back to spin the wheel but not needed in morning at all.
The Sen people I spoke to all say that the current mgt Johnson Quick are like many before them dont have much talk to those at Sen and they seem to think that just because someone started at Sen when it began that gives them life membership to stay on Sen
It shouldnt work that way and some at Sen think the only reason some are not told they are not in the future plans is simply because Johnson and Quick are scared to make hard calls and dont want to hurt peoples feelings.
Cohen , Allen , Tony etc etc Harford plenty of the weekend people all could do as good a job in the ratings on some shows and might even surprise a few and inmprove them.
Instead of trying to work out why the ratings were so bad the Sen Staff have already been told to just ignore the ratings as one of those bad days
3aw tv stations all would have been ringing the changes by now but the gutless lack of forward thinking mgt at Sen just let it be shell be right mate.
Like I said plenty at Sen scratching their heads at the ratings and also scratching their heads at the way the mgt handle things or dont handle things

Harford?? Are you kidding me. I think he is very average and has a very limited knowledge of sport outside of footy. He is not better than any of the presenters during the week. Someone like Cohen could defintely come into a position in SEN, either hungry for sport or the good oil. He has knowledge of a wide variety of sports and I am always impressed when he fills in during the summer. I agree that Billy shows a lack of interest/knowledge in everything bar footy and cricket.

The ratings period that were just released were for a 4 week period during the middle of the tennis in the middle of summer when a lot of people are away and not listening to the radio all that much. If you compare it to the last radio survey that was taken in 2007, that took in account 3 months from the middle of September to the end of November, SEN had a 4.5% share. This period only included 2 weeks of footy, so I would much rather take a 3 month survey over a 4 week survey at the start of a year. If SEN has 2 or 3 bad surveys in a row then I would be worried.

Mate i was just throwing names up and even though i know Harf i was just putting his name up with a few others.
What i was saying was a few have been on at Sen for long enough and a change isnt going to hurt the station and might even improve it but it couldnt do any worse.
Only probs is the current mgt and the ones before them all seem to think the hardest decision to make each day at Sen is what color slurpee to get from next door .

In the Herald Sun today it has the SEN chief executive Barry Quick saying they are pretty happy with the ratings and they know there is no sport over summer
What about a league soccer cricket tennis golfing events english premier league soccer horse racing swimming athletics
Where is he going with that comment

Ratings stayed the same right through last summer. The ratings system is not to blame.

I was expecting a small drop off over summer. I didn't think they'd lose half their audience though.

I suspect there has been a significant flow on effect from their dreadful Christmas/New Year programming of endless repeats of interviews from months ago that have no relevance to current day events. Recorded, pre-packaged garbage repeated 10, 15 or 20 times turned people off the station and who knows if you can get them back.

Original, live programming is the only way to go, and I'm guessing management today just got that message. It might cost a bit more, but it's better than having half your audience head elsewhere.

They had a few good surveys, got complacent, took the audience for granted and copped a 2.6 for falling asleep at the wheel.

I listened closely during the holidays when the ratings started again and couldn't believe how most programs formats were exactly the same as they were before they went on holidays. Plain and simple, some shows just went stale.

Finey was the only one who tinkered with his show and although his ratings got hit the hardest, his show is enhanced because he showed some foresight and didn't rest on his laurels. His figures will bounce back, no doubt.

The Morning Glory is directly in the firing line now. A massively expensive show to produce and not delivering the goods in any way, shape or form.
If the cost-cutting starts, as it envitably will with the ratings slashed in half, it's reasonable to assume Morning Glory will have be copping it in the neck.

Bartlett's and Doran's programs do an adequate job, but it does seem both spend plenty of time on auto pilot and just go through the motions. Perhaps such a poor rating figure will have them examine their shows and freshen them up.

The Run Home seems the only consistent performer for the station and doesn't have much wrong with it. Perhaps they could beef it up after 6pm and try and compete with AW, because the show seems to fall away badly after 6pm.

I enjoy the station, but have to admit I don't listen as intently as I did say 6 months ago. The shows have to evolve over time and improve and that means not being predictable like most of them are now.

Today will be a shock to the system at SEN. Tomorrow is the day to shake things up and improve on what you haven't delivered on previously.

The world passes you by, if you stand still. I'm guessing management found that out the hard way today.

I guess like the Tigers, the only way is up.

in the same article Chief Executive Barry Quick says none of your reasons at all for why the ratings suffered
Only reason he gives is sport takes backwards step in summer

I don't think any of us regular listeners are suprised by that result. It's a "mates" club at SEN, so'n'so is mates with someone so they keep their job it is so obvious.

Rita is someones wifey, just like Caro was someones daughter. Nothing will change.

Seems the presenters who are the best, i.e. Dave Culbert, Ed, Steve, Richo & Mark Allen are the least heard on SEN. Breakfast show isn't working, way too many ads (I tell you that Holden ad is bordering on painful), lack of chemistry between hosts (seems Watson, Brownless V Maher) & interviews that generally add any stimulation.

Think Rita is Rohan Connelly's shag.

disregard previous crass post, remember reading this now about the schoolkids.
for them not to reply shows a lack of class and a holier than though attitude.
fwiw, morning glory is now not compulsory listening in my house or car anymore. i'll make sure i listen to the run home, casual fridays saturday spotlight and on the rise as compulsory. try to catch born in the usa and fineys show but i'm always up at 5am for training so i can't stay up too late. agree with the "stale" comments regarding mg, kb and to some extent doran. doran is actually getting some great guests on his show which is interesting listening.
hope they get eddie for the footy, might be the shot in the arm they need.

I'm a lot like you, don't listen to monring glory most days cause it just aint that good. All my 'compulsory listening' shows are on the weekends except for Casual Fridays and the first 90 minutes of The Run Home which is great.

I'm pretty annoyed with Saturday Spotlight being pulled so Craig Huntchinson can get on the radio again:mad:. Hutchie is the worst talent on radio, he sensationalises everything but then goes out of his way to make excuses for the footballers or teams who he has just been "breaking a story" about. It must be his way of staying in the players good books. Whatever it is its shit radio, he wasn't any good on triple M or AW, why do they think he is going to work on SEN? Last year they stuffed up and pulled Saturday Spotlight for some snorefest hosted by Leach, this year they are making the same mistake.

Agree with the best hosts being the least used. Ed and Steve are really talented and the best shows are the ones where the hosts have good chemistry like Saturday Spotlight, On The Rise, Casual Fridays and Born in the USA is great even though I don't know much about baseball or gridiron. because Ed and Steve are so good together, its good to listen even if you are not that interested in those sports.

Rita is definitely not Rohan Connelly's shag. I've seen him with someone else at where I work for almost a year, longer than Rita's had the kid anyway so they are not together.

WTF! Is this true, how have i not heard this before?
what a freaking joke, in the top 3 shows on the station and they can it for some tabloid, car chasing paparazzi w***er!
whoever is responsible for this decision, mark johnson or barry quick or even bloody billy from west heidelberg needs their arse kicked all the way up and down swan street.
get your ****ing act together sen and get back to doing what we started listening for.

Yeah its definitely true, I read it in the paper and also saw it discussed here awhile back. It's a really dumb move. Saturday Spotlight works becasue Mark Allan and Liam Pickering are great together and it would work just as well in the footy season as it does in the off season. Maybe have it run from 9 to 11 and then have a footy pre-match show before the afternoon game. Its really stupid to get rid of one of the best shows on the station that will have people tuning in before the footy. To replace it with Craig Hutchinson is just mental.

Its funny cause I'm not a huge fan of Allan or Pickering on their own but when they are together its great radio. Whoever is making the big decisions on SEN obviously doesn't value Saturday Spotlight because they pulled it last year once the footy started and the show that replaced it was weak.

Like it or not the industry revolves around ratings - that's where the money comes from and there isn't much individual stations can do about it, and the bigger networks don't want to for various reasons. The ratings system has a number of flaws - everybody knows that (some try to deny it publically but they know the problems) but the solutions aren't as easy. The diary changes they've made this year and the people meters Steve refers to (which are a long way off being used here) may help a bit but there'll always be significant flaws in the radio and TV systems.

maybe a lot of SEN originals are sick of so much soccer being talked up,soccer is good but is not as popular as many SEN presenters think.this is not me bagging soccer, but i know a lot of people who hate it and have turned off SEN.

give it a chance you might like it ,hutchy is nowhere as bad as that dog tony jones and he's mates with pickers so it could be good

I managed to get in the draw to win the trip to the US Masters.

I've won lots of prizes on SEN before, but this is a fantastic prize.

Fingers Crossed. I'll have a 1 in 64 chance.

I really shouldn’t post again about Dave from St. Kilda for concern of upsetting the regulars in this thread, but I thought this night time stuff might just be too good to pass up one more time for those not au fait with SEN’s biggest talkback tosser. So I stayed up last night after 1am working in my home office while checking out the IPL auction, and…viola! The droning hum of "Diamond" Dave from St. Kilda.

An edited version
Dave: not looking too good there for the Olympics is it with Spielberg pulling out as artistic director of the opening and closing ceremonies?
Phillips: …I don’t know how big a deal that is

(Now pop the champagne cork for this)

Dave: but as you probably know I do have Chinese ancestry, you know, going back to the gold rush a hundred years before John So came out here. But, you know, I’d love to see it do well, part Chinese ancestry
Phillips: stays silent:cool:

(back to the ET guy)

Dave: but they say the sticking point, you know, the former actress Mia Farrow has been pressuring Spielberg to pull out of the Olympics, is obviously, they said on the news that China buys 64 percent of the Sudan government’s oil and there is genocide there taking place at the moment. I think 200,000 people were killed so far and the Chinese government I gather is the exclusive arms supplier to the Sudanese government. It’s not very impressive is it?
Philips, now probably aching to talk about Shaq vs. Kobe this afternoon plays with a straight bat and says we’ve known about Chinese abuses for some time.

Dave: my view is…we’ve had Olympics in developing countries before…I just would have personally preferred my own view, not that they’d pay attention, but we would have had it in a developing nation that is a democracy, say, like India or Indonesia where you can write in to your local newspaper…and criticize your government and still have your personal liberties and there’s no surveillance.
Is this guy crazy or what.

So much for that Chinese ancestry appreciation. At this point I’m thinking Dave should head on over to East Timor or West Papua or even downtown Jakarta and feel free to start penning those letters of dissent for the friendly neighbourhood Indonesian newspapers. Good luck with your liberties and no surveillance, pal. And it takes about 2 years to start a business in India after you’ve got through the bureaucracy and paid everyone off, too.

Just can’t wait till "Dynamo" Dave realizes a number of the new IPL teams are owned by petrochemical and concrete companies. Hmmm, I wonder if he has any info on India’s version of Worksafe? I’m sure he’ll be bending Phillips and/or Franklin’s ear just a tad on that one. He also said in the past that Glenn McGrath shouldn’t go to India because he’s earned enough money from cricket. Unbelievable moonbat.

Phillips finishes off by setting him straight on his football observations of Libberatore and Chris Bond and swiftly moves to the next caller. I must say, Brett Phillips is easy to listen to, letting most of this stuff go through to the keeper.

So, in keeping with the popular verbiage of early morning SEN: Dave’s a DUD.:thumbsd:

Doran had my blood boiling again today, basically calling Andrew Symonds a mercenary. Doran says that because Symonds came out and said on the day of the auction that he couldnt tour Pakistan, thats why he was paid the big bucks, and it was all part of the plan.

Doran u twit, Symonds has been saying for 2 months that he doubts he will tour Pakistan! Everytime he has been asked about it, as he was yesterday, he has said the same thing. If you kept up with the world of sport you would know this! And if the Indians are offering him 1.4 million for 3 years, do u expect him to say no?

I bet if 3AW came along and offered Doran 3 times more than what he gets at SEN, he would of course say no...
