There was a problem with the signal from the studio they were recording from.

They tape that show out of Craig Hutchison's CrocMedia studio off site from SEN and there was a problem with it on Saturday morning. The show started at 10 and went for an hour, with Allen filling in for Pickering.

There are lots of different opinions on SEN's content. One of the things that is for sure is that those that post here listen to a fair amount of SEN radio.

So it's difficult to let misinformation pass without being challenged when it's clearly erroneous. Forget mathematics, surely anyone can tell time.

Just as Wyhow intimated in a previous post, I was listening the other night to a American radio guy doing a similar timeslot to KB giving a rant on an athlete convicted of dog fighting, right up to the top of the 10 O'clock hour where he ended with "after the break, NBA, the exciting NASCAR finish - back in 90 seconds." After a Sportscenter update and an ESPN promo he went straight into the NBA. Just interesting how the different cultures work. The Yanks cover about 5 or 6 sports comprehensively and that's it. Benny from Sunbury would get the shortest of short shrifts. Want netball? Make like Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor and claim Australia! Want current affairs? You know where to go. Syndicated sports radio is all sports, all the time.

As far as those time breaks go, yesterday's Dr. Turf hour on KB's show definitely had the full-on 7 to 8 minutes news/commercials/ weather/traffic updates coming out of 11 O'clock.

In regards to the Morning Glory's content, for anyone to suggest that the breaks are only a handful of minutes is simply not paying attention. Sam Newman recently appeared on MG for a 90 minute block. This is how it broke down.

After coming out of a several minute news break at 7:37am there were breaks of;

7:04 - Sports Central, commercials, and traffic
9:11 (just as red+black stated) - sponsor's plug in to the top of the hour news, Sports Central, commercials, traffic, weather
6:30 - Sports Central, news promo for what's coming up in the news, commercials and weather
6:37 and 6:50 breaks in the last 30 minutes. Note that the second break (6:50) in the middle of the half-hour was longer than the 6:30am news break (6:37). Why?

Around 47 minutes in total of material and 43 minutes of miscellaneous content.

This seems to be much like other non-syndicated radio in this talk genre and I guess it's understandable for the reason of running this kind of business. Trying to appeal to a cross section of listeners, news every 30 minutes for those just starting the day, hold listenership with those in travelling in vehicles and, attempting to fit in as much profit-making spots as possible without alienating listeners to a point that they switch off.

And this is where MG can become a strain to listen to. Throw in the technique of making a joke out of doing an in-segment plug for a sponsor (often accompanied by the familiar cash register sound) where we listeners all laugh along with the hosts and guests because we know that they know that we know it's a, wink-wink, plug for an advertiser. This technique once used ad nauseam by the Footy Show became a favourite in the US during the 1990s but lost steam as savvy teenagers were quick to spot the marketing gimmick. Sprint soft drink had huge success with NBA players.

Then you add the "this segment is brought to you by [insert sponsor here]" such as Watto's Waste, and one starts to understand how listeners get the feeling that the station is piling it on. Also with SEN live football coverage the piling on effect becomes apparent as every statistical category seems to have a sponsor attached.

And moreover there is also a case that as Andy is a journalist not known in the past as a comedic genius and Tim being an ex-footballer is better known for sitting next to Rebecca Madden and more famous for jumping over a pack of Carlton players than his jocularity. There is also some struggling at time to extrapolate on topics - humorous and serious - which sees a scramble back to the safe confides of AFL discussion pre-empted by the daily papers. Again, the piling-on theme re-emerges as for many the AFL topics can be redundant and end up morphing into gems such as a 20-minute AFL nickname segment. This becomes nothing but filler for many listeners.

Who's better than T & A? Dunno. What's the best morning radio format for this city's sports culture's broad sporting likes? Too much diversity in likes and dislikes for me to say.

But SEN sure need to pay attention to calibrating their product with their listeners and diminish any angst, as listeners seem to know what they like and don't like - and... when it's being piled on.

I usually only listen to SENs commentary when I can't watch the games Ie. on Foxtel so I don't see the quality of every goal kicked. But from their commentary, every goal is goal of the day so a plug for the sponsor can be mentioned every single bloody time.

Usually by the 3rd consecutive goal of the day, I switch stations.

On a side note, I've been listening to some AFL podcasts one which features Bruce Eva. He had a nice little dig at SEN on Mondays show. Were discussing how a "low rated station" went chasing the Terry Wallace story last week.

No relation to Simon, it's Maddern actually. Anyway, I would have thought Tim's "friendship" with Jennifer Keyte was what he was known for.

And I'll never forget that 1981 Escort Cup final. But when I bought the DVD a few years back, the quality of the football wasn't quite as I remembered.

Caught up with a couple of my ex SEN buddies and had a laugh about the latest shit happening at the swan st crazyhouse. Francis (I'm Australia's best broadcaster) Leach is proving to be a bigger tosser than even Mark Doran. He had a huge ego when I was there but its got worse apparently. Feel sorry for Ox having to work with him.

They need to start treating Finey with more respect. He knows his stuff and has done the hard work to get where he is. Would be good tohear him prime time.
