Re: Mark Doran
I don’t listen to Doran much any more as I find him one of the stiffest people involved with sports media. Here’s a few gems from the Guru of the
Good Oil:
a) From around March/April this year:
“the Foo Fighters? Who are they…I’ve never heard of them…”
The Foo Fighters are pretty popular rock band and have been around about 10 years.
b) A few weeks later on a pre-game:
“Jessica Alba? Who’s she…no I’ve never heard of her.”
His colleagues in the booth were amazed. The star of Dark Angel, Sin City, Fantastic 4, and perennial top three finisher in myriad magazines’ hottest woman in Hollywood, was in Australia (and at the footy) to promote Fantastic Four 2.
c) While doing an advertorial a couple of months ago for weight lifting equipment he paused after saying
“a smith machine” to exclaim,
“whatever that is.”
I may be alone here but anyone that has ever been training or excising in a gym knows what a smith machine is. This bloke puts forward all sorts of opinions on what athletes do and go through, but may be clueless as to what is involved in heavy gym training, as it sounds like he’s never been in one.
d) A young disappointed talkback caller rang in after the death of wrestler Chris Benoit only to have Doran quickly take the I’m-too-smart-for-wrestling stand, asking the caller if Benoit was an ACT-or or a real wrestler. He then quickly boasted that he
“wouldn’t know Hulk Hogan if he walked in the door,” and moved to the next caller.
Wrestling’s fake? Nah.
I’m sure Doran’s under 40-years-old. Hosting a sports show aimed mostly at the male demographic he should be more clued-up than he seems.
