great start by SEN....ive only heard last nights game and parts of the carlton essendon game tonight

i didnt think matt granland would be a good signing as i couldnt stand him when he did saturday nights on AW 2 seasons ago, but he has improved 100%

REVIEW OF THE FOOTY ON SEN SO FAR

Kangaroos vs Collingwood - Friday 23rd February.
Anthony Hudson: Classy performer, we already new he was good and did well first up.. Did sound a little nervous to begin but once he began seemed to settle downa bit. 9/10
Matt Granland: He is good... has the potential of becoming an absolute gun radio caller if he wants to be, I think he is a gem of a get for SEN. 8/10
Dermott Brereton: I am a fan of Drmie, I know he is not everyone's cup of tea but if people gave him a chance they may realise that the insight into the game that he offers is sensationla and the amount of times he picks what is about to happen in the play makes him one of the best special comments men in the league. 9/10
Chris Scott: He was quite good I thought, not a fan of Scott as a player at all but putting that aside he slotted into the special comments role quite well and had good repour with Dermie... 7/10

FOOTY TALK
Matt Thompson: This show worked really well today I thought and it is what SEN have been needing for a while. MAtty was very energetic today and enthusiastic which was great. You could feel the excitment he was feeling and he hosted in great fashion I thought. as host he gets a 8/10.

Ben Dixon: Benny was good today, he seemed to be nice and relaxed and not to scared to give his opinion on a few different issues. HArd to rate as he is a curent player and not a regular but well done to benny. 7/10

Western Bulldogs vs Sydney - Saturday 24th
Matt Granland: See above, although i believe he was more relaxed and performed at a 9/10.
Andrew Maher: Am not a fan of Andy Maher normally, but Radar is a very impressive caller. For me he is an accurate caller and easy to listen to, if I didnt have a past opinion of him then he would sound even better. 7/10.
Daniel Harford: He is good Harf, knows how to enjoy himself while still providing comments that will help listeners get an idea of what there team is doing right or wrong. 8/10

Carlton vs Essendon - Saturday 24th
Anthony Hudson: Huddo once again was good and PRO, has good repour with the whole team. 9/10 again!
Mark Readings: This guy will be good, will take a bit of getting used to but seems to be smooth and I noticed alot quicker then some of the other callers, will be great for SEN from Perth. on his performance tonight i would rate him a 9/10.
Dermott Brereton: Have talked about DErmie earlier was once again great as well as after the game he was good tonight. 9/10.
Tiffany Cherry: Tiff was good, she knows the right times to speak and knows her limits and only comments on what she knows which is good. I liked her performance tonght and think she can be good. 7/10.

sen can stick it

how can they cut "on the rise" from its best timeslot 10-12am for a crap motor racing show its a joke

youd think that they have the footy now they would like a nice lead in to the game but its typcial sen crap lets stuff it up and talk about cars and then everyone will switch off and we wont get them back again!

if they touch spotlight its all over

No, I don't think so.

Part of the reason I think its ratings are so low is that with the sample for radio ratings being relatively low, a few people could determine the ratings fate of an SEN show. Now this isn't a huge problem if they were a 3AW which already has a big audience, but with SEN's ratings already poor, it makes it even more important that those people with ratings diaries say they listen to SEN.

Personally I think the radio ratings system is deeply flawed. You essentially have to tick a box for what station you are listening to, for each 15 minute period of the day. Further, you have to tick a box to say where you were listening. And then there are another few pages where they ask you about your 'buying habits'.

Seriously, even if you do take an interest in the media, it is still a boring, time consuming exercise. People's lives are busy enough as it is, and they probably have better things to do than tick boxes.

I think they really need a serious marketing campaign. There are many sports nuts in Melbourne who haven't even heard of the station. My cousin said to me last week he was following the A-League via the web because he doesn't have Foxtel. He hadn't even heard of SEN, let alone know they were broadcasting Victory matches.

However, they are sometimes their own worst enemy sometimes. The website still says Huddo is on The Run Home and makes no mention of Francis Leach. In the Green Guide today, the listings say SEN is broadcasting 4 matches of something called ALF Football on Saturday and Sunday. Now, I don't know whose fault it is, and it is obviously a typo, but it also comes across as unprofessional. And what's on SEN next Mon-Thu? "Listings Unavailable at time of going to press".

While I agree that the radio ratings system is flawed to a certain extent it doesn't explain why SEN's ratings have slumped so dramatically. With the same rating system in place the station has maintained a consistent figure over the previous couple of years.Poor marketing may explain an inability to grow but not this drop in support,I mean KB lost nearly half his audience!
I suggested that soccer may be to blame because, while as a Melbourne based sports radio station they had to cover victory "wall to wall",a significant part of their demographic remain largely unmoved by the soccer "phenomena". Soccer in this country is still parochially based. Check the coverage the World Cup got pre and post Socceroos elimination . Similarly the A League GF last year got largely "minor sport" coverage in Melbourne. It seems to me the only ratings indicator between last year and this year is a successful local soccer team.

dont blame the soccer mate the coverage was quality

if it wasnt for the victory they would be talking cricket all summer and who the hell would want that

im stilled pissed they cut on the rise by 2 hours for a crap car racing show with schibecci the guy is on during the week for 30 hours your telling me he cant talk motor sport then

richo and harf are guns

I'm not blaming the soccer coverage per se. The coverage of the soccer was quality to the nth degree. What I'm saying is that a key element of their demographic couldn't relate to this and were alienated and turned off. This element probably would have preferred "talking cricket all summer".

I think SEN has actually killed my love of AFL, the over-saturation where I just get the feeling sometimes they will talk about just such trivial matters of AFL clubs and players lives, and particularly the key shows i.e: Run home and MorningGlory as those are the major two I listen to, and now basically all day 12-7 or whatever AFL on the weekends, I wont be able to escape it...

I just want to hear about something else.

I would think that SEN's overall ratings would be highest in September, and lowest from Nov-Jan, purely because of the AFL interest. It'll be interesting to see if SEN can get up to around 4-5 in the ratings, i think management would expect so given new listeners to live AFL.

I agree with that.

I love my AFL, but there is simply too much of it on SEN at the moment. They would much rather talk about Joel Bowden cutting his front lawn than talk about another sport or sporting event. I mean the Melbourne Tigers are in the GF and I've heard it mentioned once in 3 days.

They are SPORTS Entertainment Network, yet they don't cover all sports. It's simply AFL, AFL, AFL, AFL and more AFL. Even when they are talking about another sport, they'll always find a way to bring it back to AFL.

I now rarely listen to SEN for this reason, but given AFL's stake in the company probably expected.

I tuned out of Morning Glory also because it is childish and cringeworthy to listen to.

Ay men to that brother....even if you call up during the 'soap box' or whatever, the big calling-in sections, you'll get a "good call mate" and they quickly move onto the next caller to talk about how they had to crawl through a fence at Telstra Dome:rolleyes:

good article written on AFL.com about the first weekend of SEN footy coverage..
http://www.afl.com.au/Season2007/News/NewsArticle/tabid/208/Default.aspx?newsId=38446

A couple of interesting quotes by Ross Felgaltaub (footy producer):

**good to see they know it wasnt perfect.... and will admit it: “We know we've got a couple of tiny little technical glitches we need to work on, and we'll do that in the next couple of weeks. So by the time the season proper starts, we'll be up and running and firing on all cylinders."

** they are relativley happy with the overall performance: “But we did the five games and all of them definitely had a pass mark – the callers gelled really well and Anthony Hudson really held together the Friday night team."

**and an insight into when the real season starts: "We're going to start our preview before any other radio station does. Most of them start at either 6pm or 7pm on a Friday night, and we're going on-air, from the ground, at 5pm," he said. "We're also going to be on-air at 11am on Saturday and Sunday. All the others start at 12, but we'll be on at 11, and our Saturday preview show will feature Hudson, Watson and Brereton, and Mark Robinson from the Herald Sun."

**** Looks like the end of saturday spotlight the way that reads....

I think Sat Spotlight will stay - but will probably lose an hour, and be 9 am - 11 am.

I can't see the Motor Racing show staying in that 10am - 12pm timeslot it ran at this week, it would be an awful lead in for the footy.

You may see something like On the Rise go from 9 am - 11 am, with the footy kicking off after that. Personally, I would love to see The Insiders back!

That leaves early Sunday morning free for one of the specialist sports shows. There is also Sunday night, and also the late night slots during the week when they are running The Day in Sport highlights show. I think it is important SEN doesn't go overboard with the AFL, and ensure shows like Born in the USA, The Four Diegos, and even stuff which I'm not a huge fan of like the Motor Racing Show still maintain a presence during the footy season.

Can someone Please...PLEAAAAAAAAAASE tell KB to turn is freaking mic off when someone else is talking so we don't have to hear his f/n mouth noises. It makes me sick and I can't stand listening to it.

I can't for the life of me understand how someone hasn't pulled him up on it yet. He does it EVERYDAY!!!! It's revolting!

lol whats the point of going to the ground at 11am that is rubbish

atleast now they will see the motor racing show is rubbish and should either be on schibecci's overnight show or get rid of the day in sport and start it at 11pm during the week

motor racing on a sunday morning give me a break

dont stuff up spotlight or else they will get a reality check come rating time during the year because spotlight is a winner on sat mornings and if people know they footy is coming on they will stick around

You should be the program lineup guy! Day in Sport is BORING as.

thats what im saying mate i love my sen but they have no idea

get rid of the day in sport and put all the good interviews on your website via podcast

then during the week you can put some quality shows at 11pm that are a bit more fiery etc then your normal during the day stuff

its just all politics and who has shows and blah blah

I hope born in the USA stays....having footy basically non-stop from 5pm Friday till 8pm Sunday is going to ruin my weekend.

Those guys should be picked up to do a TV show they are fantastic

The Run Home which is already the best show will lift anbother notch during the AFL season we already know about the rocket and robbo show on a thursday now add a great monday review segment: Listen out for Brownlow medalist and Collingwood star Nathan Buckley who will join five-time day and night premiership player, Dermott Brereton on Monday nights throughout the AFL season.

Thoughts??

My thoughts = overkill.

About time, it's only been that bad for 2 years now.

The AFL have no stake, if you've listened to the station for the past 3 years you'll know they always have a huge focus on footy...it's simply the main focus of Melbourne sports fans and why not. Even during the summer you get people ringing up saying "I can't wait for the footy".

But yeah it'd be good to see more coverage of soccer and basketball on the station but the problem is the presenters don't have a clue about anything other than footy which is why they're out of their depth and it's useless for them to discuss any other sports.

The thing is, you can't even swear on air after midnight or the presenters go crazy. Is there a regulation on that? Surely saying "********" on air every now and then and if it's not gratuitous doesn't do any harm?

SEN are so behind the times, how many radio stations these days don't have podcasts? Maybe 3AW don't, but that's an old people's station.

yeh they have podcats but they are rubbish

there are just too many goody goody hosts for my liking they need a show that just speaks the truth and doesnt try be all nice to the supporters so they keep listening

the promos have started for that new motor racing show with schibecci what a joke get the footy but lets talk about a sport no one gives a rats about

ill be sleeping in sundays and listening to triple m

The SEN website is also very far behind the times. I have sent them feedback many times on the website and it should be updated. They still have the pics of Huddo with Ox for the run home. On the saturday and sunday presenters. If you aren't an expert in all things sport, you wouldn't have a clue who is who in those pics. I know two or three of them. but the others? No idea.

If they are going to have pics of presenters, at least put the right presenters attached to the right shows.

Hold Ya Horses doesn't go near long enough. 1 hours is too short, they are always rushing through the tips and guests stay on 1 min. or near enough to.

But seems they don't listen to too much feedback.

I'm a morning glory fan, but Billy is starting to be too damn stupid lately.
