The Serious Covid Thread - For Those Who Want Serious Discussion

Bit of an issue for the prospect of overseas travel.

Be Many More Years before we can think of Traveling Overseas.

Even Risks during going to Different States with Possibly getting Stuck into Lockdown/Quarantine IF you are in the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time

So the current big news story in Australia is the banning of flights from India.
While we all have sympathy for those stuck in India, should the Government be compassionate and repeal this act, or should it continue along the path of “protecting Australians on Australian soil”.
Im firmly in the latter course of action. I note people stating that we didn’t do this when the virus was raging in England and the US, pointing to the current laws as an act of racism.
I would argue that we have learnt a hell of a lot in the 12 months since the pandemic raged overseas. We have learnt that we are an island, and that being an island gives us a massive advantage. An advantage we are now using to keep you and me Covid free.
I fully support the actions of the Morrison Government in this current climate.

I agree we should not letting anyone in from India.

When you are having 100's of Thousands Cases a Day the Chance of it coming here from Return Flight is almost Guaranteed.

Too bigger risk

Overseas travel won't occur whilst a country is targetting zero covid. With the vaccine and overseas travel, other countries are going to trial it well before Australia - Israel is about to allow tour groups in with the aim of allowing regular travel in their Summer. Other countries will have a heap of data of living with covid in a vaccinated environment before Australia opens up. The question with the vaccine is whether it lowers the rates of infection and hospitalisation to the point where it is just another disease we can live with.

I think vaccines will make covid just like the flu before too long at which point Australia should open up, but there's a fair bit of water to go under the bridge before that occurs, and there's also the reality that it will takes ages after data shows it to be just the flu before the Australian population start to view it that way and are willing to allow the government to open up without dramas.

Bit of an issue for the prospect of overseas travel.

It isn't an issue at all.

It's an example of media stupidity and the fact that politicians are complete and utter kh$#ts.

Anyone that read the trial data would know that some in the vaccinated groups developed Covid. It's just that they were vastly outweighed by those in the placebo group who did.

If the Morrison government had started building proper quarantine facilities with its billions of dollars of stimulus 12 months ago we wouldn't have to choose between relying on poorly equipped hotel quarantine facilities with likely leaks into the community or stopping Australians coming home.

TD you can travel overseas now if you have a good reason. It won't be 'many years' before we can travel overseas. What is the point of getting vaccinated if you are just going to confine yourself to this country or not allow anyone into Australia. Might be OK by you, but for most people who wish to travel and experience other countries and cultures, it's a ridiculous proposition to remain locked away for years in this island country.

Leaving may not be an issue, it isn’t now if you have a valid reason.
A holiday is not a valid reason.
But no matter the future ability to leave, it will more than likely remain a condition of re-entry that you do 14 days quarantine. At your expense. For years to come.
The resurgence of Covid in new variants will continue to be the issue, vaccination or not.
This is nonsense. Even the Australian government have said they are likely to drop the quarantine for vaccinated citizens. There is no way this condition will last beyond this year. People are not going to spend the next however many years as prisoners of their own borders by a virus for which vaccination is available and kills less than 1% of the population and probably no one if everyone is immunized.

Where is the first place you would head if COVID disappeared tomorrow?

I have no doubt about that.
What I do doubt is the Government’s opinion that the virus can be locked down by vaccination of the populace.
The virus has already exhibited its ability to mutate in short time. The Government have already exhibited the ability to shut borders, under threat of fines and jail time, in short time.
To believe that the Government will deliver on a “promise” of zero quarantine days is simply to ignore the precedent set by the same Government in the last 12 months.
Equally, to think that the country will be locked off from the rest of the world for years by a virus from which the vaccinated vulnerable will be protected, while Europeans and Americans are able to freely travel much of the globe, is beyond reasonable and frankly unbearable.

There was a statement from another poster about chasing a zero Covid policy. That’s simply unachievable, but that’s what we appear to be doing.
If the Morrison Government does up the quarantine facilities, outside of cities CBD’s, then unfettered (for the majority) travel may still happen in 2022. But there will always be regulations about this travel. Negative test within 48/72 hours of return, 14 days in government/home isolation. The bare minimum that must be enforced for years to come.
I am pessimistic about this country's ability to realistically deal with the dangers posed by the virus, but I think your pessimism is totally over the top.

It’s not pessimism. It’s just reality as I see it based on the history of the last 12 months. Be it Government, international reaction and dealing with the virus, or the ability of the virus itself to throw a curve ball.
I’m actually looking for international travel for October to celebrate the big six O. New Zealand is my only option and I’m struggling to find a decent tour at a decent price, and I understand that if I purchase there’s a damn good chance that I’m not going anywhere.
This is the reality of 2021 and I believe 2022.
I will get out of here longer term in the second half of the year if I have to otherwise I doubt I could survive being imprisoned here for 2+ years. I am dog sitting currently for someone who has gone to NZ. Flying to NZ is also a way of getting out of the country as unlike Australia it is possible to fly out of there to overseas destinations. As you say the problem is re-entering Australia. My US mate is heading to Europe from the states for a couple of months in summer - he is already fully vaccinated with Pfizer. Makes me jealous when I hear what people are able to do from other countries.

You know I still detest the line “imprisoned”.
This is Australia. For all its faults, it’s a pretty good place to be stuck in.
I like you GG. Would love to have a sneaky beer as I’m sure our common views outweigh our differences.
But you need to respect your “prison” much more than you do now.
Agreed to some extent re 'prison'. I loathe Melbourne winters, my Thai mate's life is unravelling without my presence and I really miss socialising nightly with my expat friends in Cambodia. But I agree with you about having a beer. I think we'd find some common ground and have a bit of a laugh at our sometimes overly precious forum behaviour.

One case.
And the media go wild!
The reporting is really over the top here, there is good news, contacts of the positive case have tested negative. But the news services don’t lead with that.
They lead with outrage and scare tactics.
It shits me.
Besides, I don’t think this positive case is real. Because every positive case that has possible contact venues listed (even in NZ) has always, ALWAYS, had a visitation to a Bunnings store. Yes even NZ!
No Bunnings visit = fake news…….
The media have shown themselves to be nothing more than panic merchant clowns in handling how to come across with information.
