The Shae Mac Experiment

I think your looking a bit too much into it, simply due to cash we are highly unlikely to be able to lure any top line basketballers. The money they can make playing ball even throughout europe would trump anything we would be able to offer. I think it's as simple as the guy was a super athlete with good size and there was / is nothing to lose by giving him a go and seeing if he can get the hang of the game, obviously if he does with his athletic weapons he is going to be a decent player.

I am sure the marketability of a having a yank and the lure if he was to make it was considered but I don't think it featured highly in the decision making.

I am interested in this description, Shawthing. I have seen him play a couple of times, and haven't seen any evidence of this. I actually thought he looked slow and without any great agility.

What data do we have to support this notion? We can certainly cross endurance off the list of athletic traits he has. What else can he do to justify the above description?

He can jump!

As for being a test pilot for train up a ruckman from being a basketballer, you'd think Brogan from Port has already proven it can be done. It's worth a shot, maybe more likely to happen from an Aus basketballer who know AFL, or someone young at least.

As answered below the obvious one is his leap, he isn't majorly agile but he is still very well co-ordinated for a big bloke and has a big verticle for his size.

He doesn't take up a rookie spot on our list. He is an international rookie outside the list. He essentially costs us nothing except his salary. Well worth giving a chance. Also I thought he was 25 next year.
But if he doesn't make huge ground in 2011 we should try another international rookie - one about 18 years old and probably from Ireland where the better athlets can strive for a living from Australian Rules.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere we have an Irish kid who is going to be added to the rookie list for next year which is good news.

Irish rookies are not considered international rookies and take up a rookie list spot. International rookies are outside the list and as far as I know you can have as many as you want.

We rookie listed Paul Cribbin this year - somehow listed him outside the list despite being Irish. I'm guessing he has a citizenship somewhere other than Ireland which would get him around the rules.

We have comitted to selecting Caolan Mooney next year as an Irish rookie.

I think that the club would be hoping for some vast improvement in 2011. For someone totally new to the game it is understandable that he should be given one season to learn as much as possible and to start gettin comfortable with the skills, rules etc. This year however he needs to start to control games through the ruck and as a KPP if he us to ever make it as a seniors player.

I give him some chance if making it. Not likely yet well worth the risk.

I thought it a good idea to give the guy a chance after all his self promotion. Whether Shae fails or succeeds, the experiment has been an interesting one.

Fair enough, thanks for the education.
