Never understood what people saw in this Jack Nicholson hamfest.

Kubrick's worst film IMO.

Actually I agree. I normally love Nicholson, but he is a spontaneous actor and Kubrick's rigourous rehearsals and numerous takes resulted in a pretty dreadful, over-the-top performance, whereby he is obviously a nutter from the start and the Overlook Hotel hardly worsened his demeanor.

Although the film really does not work, it still has a number of memorable moments and the acute sense of claustrophobia is worked up nicely.

Saw this for the first time last night.

It goes without saying that I knew how the film would go having grown up with The Simpsons, but I really enjoyed the film all the same.

Hard to believe it is 32 years old.

the most recent south park episode has randy playing the nicholson character. Pretty rubbish ep though. How they managed to make a randy episode underwhelming is beyond me.

Rewatched this today. It is a masterpiece. It is a horror movie but it doesn't rely on the usual cheap tricks. It is about atmosphere. It starts slow but just builds and builds. Apart from the hotel decor it hasn't dated.

It's got some great scenes - Jack chopping the door with an axe, his chat with the barman, the kid riding round the hotel corridors, the wife finding that his writing is page after page of the same sentence, the mild mannered waiter who gradually reveals himself to be an evil madmad.

Nicholson seamlessly goes from regular guy to arseh*le to psychopath. He overacts at times but the role demands it.

8/10.

I liked it but I don't think it's the masterpiece it's made out to be. I think there are a lot better Stephen King adaptions. The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Dolores Claiborne and Misery to name a few

Stephen King is salty as this film adaptation made changes (apparently, never read it) and is more successful than his book was. He can't even admit it's a good movie.

I watched the three hour director's cut of Doctor Sleep today. It's a fine sequel. Incorporates a lot of the original in content and style then takes it in a slightly different direction.

7/10.

It is an absolute classic of cinema, and one of the 10 best from 1980:

1. Raging Bull
2. The Shining
3. The Falls
4. The Empire Strikes Back
5. Ordinary People
6. Coal Miner's Daughter
7. Altered States
8. Breaker Morant
9. The Long Kiss Goodnight
10. The Last Metro
HM: Hopscotch, Airplane!

Some interesting trivia. The closing scenes from Blade Runner where they are driving away through the countryside include outtakes from the beginning of The Shining.
