Some would make the argument that the Simpsons had such a profound effect that society conformed to it rather than the other way around.

It definitely made everyone more cynical about the world with the way we look at ourselves

One thinks the viewers just grew up and got on with life

Heck, imagine if everyone in the world approached life like how the Simpsons saw it, (regardless of the fact it was an American television show) we'd all live in a better world

Granted, some of the humour is dated, I refer to the episode of the Japanese restaurant when Homer ate a blowfish, the 'joke' that there are directions to the hospital on the back of the menu, my parents were insulted by that

I was looking at my pay slip today and noticed the Flood Levy for the first time, which automatically made me think of the Bear Tax as 'The largest tax increase in history.' I was laughing pretty hard and I began to look for a rock that would keep cyclones away.
Kyptastic, I want to buy your rock.

One that I use every now and again in the real world.

I bought S14 on DVD. Wow, it's really not good.

A lot of people tend to blame Mike Scully for ruining the show, I actually thoguht his run was pretty good. And listening to him on the commentaries I really like him. Al Jean's run however seems to be what's killing it. Although he's admitted that by now it's nigh on impossible to think of good ideas that haven't already been done.

I love how they and Futurama (and South Park, to a lesser extent) do commentaries on every episode. Gives a great insight into what goes into making the show and how they have evolved over time.

That said, I've only bought up to Season 9 of the Simpsons and I doubt I'd buy any more. For me, it really starts to get uneven after that.

Futurama commentaries are great. Cohen and Groening together are hilarious. Example: The episode I, Roommate

Cohen: So the history with this episode is that the network wanted us to stop doing so many crazy space episodes and to just do a grounded, simple story just on Earth. We listened to their feedback all the way, did everything they asked. And what was their reaction when we showed it to them Matt?
Groening: Worst. Episode. Ever.
