The Sliding Mids - KA

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

I know this thread is called sliding mids and that there will certainly be some sliders, but what are the reasons that make you think that Adams will slide to #22 to us when he is quite quick, good in traffic and like you said avg. 30 possessions in the TAC cup? most posters on BF rate him top 15 material and I even rate him top 10, plus he has leadership qualities, which are something clubs value a lot these days, especially for a new club such as GWS. Don't get me wrong, I'd be over the moon if we get him, but I am just interested in your opinion as to why Adams will slide that far in a supposedly weak draft.

Clubs would see Coniglio, WHE, Tyson, Wingard, Greene, Kavanagh, Buntine, Sumner as all better midfielders and prospects (thats 8 he is behind). Patton is a guaranteed top 2 pick. I stated the reasons why Brisbane will take 2 talls. One if not both of fremantles picks 16 and 20 will be tall at least one i feel. GWS as i said in my above post have enough mids and i have them taking all talls for the rest besides Devon Smith who i think will be used as more of a small forward early in his career and from what i know GWS dont really have many small forwards.

It basically comes down to Brisbane and GWS having 13 of the top 14 picks and both require talls.

If you look at Gold Coast from last years draft they had 8 picks in the top 13, 4 were talls and 4 were mids and they certainly had a lot more talls and players that they picked played other positions besides genuine midfield which is what i see GWS having (Scully, Palmer, Ward ect). GC picked guys like Brown, Brennan, Frasier, Coad, Z.Smith, Harbrow, Stanley ect who were suited toother positions than midfield and yet they still picked half talls and half mids with 8 top picks.

GWS midfield players which are all young guns besides Power, Scully, Ward, Palmer, Coniglio, Tyson, WHE/Wingard, Buntine, Kennedy, Shiels, Treloar, Ugle, D.Smith (slightly forward aswell) thats plenty for the future.

Than the buldogs picked up 2 very good mids with Wallis and Libba and have plenty of other areas of need and as i said fremantle will take one tall with pick 16 or 20 IMO, they desperatly need upcoming talls (Houghton got delisted as a tall forward, Sibosado delisted as a tall back, Pavlich not much longer left, Sandilands same as Pav, Anthony lucky to still be on the list, Mcpharlin not long left, Grover last year, Johnson and Kepler iffy talls.

If Adams, Sumner, Greene dont slide than D.Smith, Buntine, Ellis types will but those 3 will be seen as ealry in there career as (small forward, utility, small backmen) and would all fill a position for GWS and i know Fremantle are very keen on Ellis and he fills that hole as a small defender and wont look out of place at pick 16.

I certainly hope what you said is same as what the recruiters from other clubs think. people have said this is a weak draft but I can see some quality players you know what they say, you can never have enough quality mids.

Pick 8 - Adam Tomlinson (Bris)
I think he could be a bit of a bolter or go a bit higher than some think. I like what i see in him, his versatility to play back or forward is great, he is really well built 90kg+ but can still run 10.30 3kms and 15+ beep test i think he was the best of any tall at draft camp. His kicking skills are also very good. Im still not sure if he is a CHB or CHF which is why he is good for Brisbane. Hes not undersized/3rd tall type so he will play a key post on the ground when he is ready and he may develop quicker than other talls which is why i cant see him going any worst than pick 15 and why he is also a great fit for Brisbane. Along with his great fitness, has a good attitude, looks really composed for a big man on the field and has great kicking skills. Can see him playing sooner than later. I see him as the stand out 2nd tall behind Patton.
Range: 7-15
Player Comparison: See alot of Hurley in him with his kicking and versatility and the way he goes for grabs. Also a bit of Henderson from carlton.

Dont want to pump my tyres up too much, but just letting a bit of air in

My first round thoughts have changed a bit

1. Coniglio (GWS)
2. Patton (GWS)
3. Tyson (GWS)
4. WHE (GWS)
5. Buntine (GWS)
6. Wingard (Port)
7. Tomlinson (GWS)
8. Greene (Bris)
9. Longer (GWS)
10. Adams (GWS)
11. Haynes (GWS)
12. Mcinnes (Bris)
13. Crozier (GWS)
14. Bolger (GWS)
15. Sumner (Rich) - Bargain
16. Ellis (Freo)
17. Docherty (WBD)
18. Markworth (North)
19. Kavanagh (Ess) - could be a steal
20. Kersten (Freo)
21. T.Mitchell (Syd) F/S
22. Manson (Carl) - I know carlton fans wont be happy with this
23. Newman (WCE)
24. S.Frost (GC)
25. T.Elton (Stk)
26. D.Smith (Rich)
27. Forster (Adel)
28. Trunbridge (WCE)
29. Lockyer (Freo)
30. J.Dobosz (Bris)
31. M.Grigg (Ess)
32. B.Mckenzie (Geel)
33. S.Nelson (Hawks)
34. A.Boseley (Geel)
35. Talia (Stk) - need a tall backmen and he is ready made (doggies will want him at 39)
36. Sheridan (Melb) - would be chasing a midfielder he is the next best IMO
37. Seb Ross (Stk) - Will be looking for a genuine midfielder after getting Elton and Talia as tall stocks (replacing Dawson and Kozi)
38. Sam Kerridge (Hawks) - cant see them taking Curran after denying him F/S as early as this anyway
39. Brody Mihocek (WBD) - After missing out on Talia who they are keen on than i reckon he is the next best tall back AA u18
40. Paine (North) - some north supporter said they needed a tall forward, also wouldnt mind seeing this guy developed as a backmen, close to next best available
41. C.E.Yolmen (Adel) - local boy who is a genuine midfielder and wins alot of it, maybe Curran as a look for a tall
42. E.Yeo (Stk) - can play anywhere and after getting Elton (KPF/Ruck/IAS product), Talia (KPD ready made), Ross (mid) they will look for an allrounder who they may see similarly to see Sam Fisher
43. T.Curran (Syd) - After getting one of the best players from the draft at 21 and already developing plenty of talent and youth through the middle i think the swans will look to to fill the loss of Johnstone, Bradshaw and Bolton. He can play either end.
44. C.Smith (Carl) after crying about Manson i feel you will go best available mid (Smith, Woodward, Waldhunter, Hill, Dagleish, Merrett) are the options. Smith i picked because of his outstanding carnival ability to play a tagging role and his more ready made physique which could help play a role in soon success more so than the others.
45. Murdoch (Port) Utility type who can play any flank or midfield. Smooth moving, lovely kick, lightning fast (2.76 20m sprint) and very agile. Has also played as a lead out full forward so has some nice aspects to his game, local lad just adds more to what Port need, they seem covered for talls in the short term with Carlisle, Chaplin, Trengrove, Butcher, Lobbe, Westhoff all signing on and getting Renouf to replace Brogan. Will be looking to Jump in before crows next pick.
46. H.Schade (Adelaide) Must go tall back, he is a genuine tall at 195cm probably one of the tallest defenders. Has got a pretty decent kick on him aswell, meaning he can setup play. They just need to find some assurance for Rutten if he was to go down, should fill out well and add weight easily under an AFL program.
47 (Brisbane)
48. Jackson Merrett (Geelong) It seems you have to be 6 foot one or taller to be at Geelong (Smedts, Duncan, Guthrie, Menzel, Horlin Smith) are some of there latest early additions via the draft and none were genuine midfielders. So with this i have them following along similar lines drafting from their backyard but taking a genuine midfielder in Merrett.

lol why put Manson there if you know we won't be happy to risk it on a player like Manson? As days go by, I like our increasing chance of maybe snatching Kavanagh at #22, now that would be a Wayne Hughes special.

Tend to agree with you KA.
I reckon bondy & lloydy would have plenty of discussion if Ellis & kavanagh were available at pick 16.

1. Because carlton fans arnt recruiters
2. Carlton fans have no say in who they pick
3. Phelan has heard that calrton interested in Manson
4. At the same time the above was said Emma Quayle tweeted Carlton interested in a left field pick
5. Carlton really dont have that many great tall forwards and there best one is on his last legs and is lucky to play half a season
6. The tall forward they picked up last year has more injury worries than Paul Chapman and we know the hit rate of tall forwards, usually hits 1 in every 4 i reckon

Yeah the reason ive picked Ellis is because your (freo) bloody keen on him. Kavanagh has little exposed form, played 8 games of TAC cup football in 2 years and it seems he is falling down the list by the day due to clubs being so concerned by his injuries and not really having the runs on the board anyway. He hardly said pick me as a top 15 pick avg 15 posses a game in the TAC cup and being out for half a year with a hamstring injury.

I mean clubs would really have to be on their game by watching him in the little amount they could have (3 games really this year) to be confident of picking him as a top 15 or so pick. Recruiters/scouts from one club arnt always at the games/every game.

Would be a great pick at 40

Come on KA, can't you just stretch it out another two picks? :p

I did mate gone to 45 still undecided on ports pick at 45 though.

I have you guys with Clay Smith at pick 44 after his AA efforts and his inside hard nosed ability and also capable of playing a tagging role (i have written a little thing next to him).

Other midfielders in consideration after Manson at 22 were Woodward, Murdoch, Brad Hill, Dalgleish, Merrett and Waldhunter (who im not a fan of).

Would be stoked with Paine at 40.

If we could nab Docherty/Kavanagh/McKenzie at 18 (not so much Markworth) then we'd be doing backflips.

I think thats probably the middle of Paines range 35-45 so every chance with the roos looking to add some height after Bastinac, Atley, Cunnington, Harper a small at 18 like you said i think you guys would have to look tall at 40 and Paine could become a good forward. Has the size/height and grounding/base is similar to that of a Jack Riewoldt, Roughead at a young age he could develop/fill out very well.

The roos pick 18 is a hard one, they seem to be keeping everything close to their chest. Only player i have heard they are keen on is Markworth, he will be available if the dogs dont pick him so i cant reason to give it to anyone else any more. Cant say the roos exactly have to many similar players to Markworth as a good half forward flank/tall wingman type. Remember the club if they are picking Markworth that highly will see him as more than just a half forward flanker they will see him as a true midfielder who can push forward or start his career forward.

Docherty would suit but he is gone (in this draft). Mckenzie i think has been overhyped on BF but for every reason IMO. I would take him at 4 or 5 i think.

All fair enough but we didn't even interview Manson, I'm a fan but from everything I can gather we'll be going in a different direction.

Wouldn't be too bad at all :thumbsu:

Hmm where did you hear this? Link, very hard to know who the club actually interviewed unless your a recruiter for the club or were at the combine which is an official event only.

I cant see Phelan just making this story up and its weird that Emma Quayle said it is quite out of the blue the player they are thinking about.

If i was going on percentage's and a betting man i would bet on the below as the greatest chance of happening. Top 13 just about locked i would say, 13 players i am comfortable of that will go top 14. (Coniglio, Patton, Tyson, WHE, Buntine, Wingard, Adams, Greene, Sumner, Tomlinson, Longer, Haynes, D.Smith all confident these 13 will go top 14 and either Crozier or Docherty will be the other depending on who lions take at 12)

1. Coniglio (GWS)(still think number 1 because of his decision to pick to play for GWS and not wait another year)
2. Patton (GWS)
3. Tyson (GWS)
4. WHE (GWS)
5. Buntine (GWS)
6. Wingard ((Port) very happy with this, i dont know why GWS arnt picking him)
7. Adams (GWS)(from being invited to draft and Emma Q tweeting GWS or Brisbane where will he go?)
8. Greene (Bris)(They should pick Tomlinson meaning they get Sumner, Smith, Docherty with pick 12)
9. Sumner (GWS)
10. Tomlinson (GWS)
11. Longer (GWS)
12. Docherty (Bris) (backing FOJ1 that they are keen on Docherty, D.Smith will be another option, if Smith goes here or Tomlinson than i think Docherty will fall to the tiggies and GWS wont take)
13. D.Smith (GWS)
14. Haynes (GWS)
15. Markworth (Rich) (If Docherty goes before, otherwise Docherty and will snap Adams* up if hes here)
16. Ellis (Freo) (keen on Ellis well speculated, surely not Bootsma or Kersten at this pick, how keen are they on Kav?)
17. Crozier (WBD) (Probably their man, or was Docherty or Markworth on the list before him, pick 12 and 15 will decide who they pick from these 3, whoevers available)
18. Mckenzie (Norf) (elite kick and hbf who can play midfield and has a wonderful size about him, polished and agile like Heppell. Everything points to Kav being next best though, but is the dad fiasco pushing them away or was it all a bluff or overhyped media rumble, we will find out on Thursday)
19. Kavanagh (Ess) (he would be favourite by the bookies to go at this pick with north a close second)
20. Kersten (Freo)
21. Mitchell (Syd)
22. C.Smith (Carl) (Murdoch who i rate highly is a big chance, will they snare him from the eagles grasp and is that why the eagles did a quick medical on Hill yday with the intuiton their man may go one spot before them)
23. Murdoch (WCE) (Initially i thought Talia because the crows will pounce on him and its the pick before the eagles second. Could still well be Talia or Mcinnes a chance, hes the reason they pass on Talia at this pick)
24. (Only god knows) Yeo (GC), maybe a tall back sounds like the biggest chance (Frost, Mcinnes, Talia, Schade)
25. Elton (Stk) (Snared before the tigers, I still think Bolger a chance but Emma Q doesnt seem to think so)
26. Really dont know now (always had them with the chance to snare two of Docherty, Ellis, D.Smith, Mckenzie, Markworth but thats changed now).
27. Talia (Crows)
28. Mcinnes or Newman or Hill (WCE) (It sounds like they are keen on a big back aswell as a small forward, i sloghtly favour Newman as Emma Q didnt say keen on Mcinnes and hes a local lad, although examined Schade and Talia as tall backs. Eagles doing a late check on Hill is interesting, maybe just as backup to Murdoch)
29. Bootsma (Freo) (People saying they are looking at him with pick 16 and 20, Wow i hope not. That could well be so GC dont get him at 24, i say he should be available at 29 and they are too keen on Ellis and Kersten and if they are available they shouldnt try anything silly.
30. Bolger (Bris) Maybe Mcinnes, they always love a WA kid and have taken a few over recent times and been interested in plenty of others
31. Sheridan, Ross or Kerridge (No doubt about it. Kerridge will either go at 27,31,33,37 or 41 no later and if Kav aint available Kerridge could be looked at at 19 i reckon, Markworth probably has to be unavailable aswell, i see the dons having at least one of the above available, hes my fav for this pick now considering the crows will find it hard to past on him at 27)

29. Bootsma (Freo) (People saying they are looking at him with pick 16 and 20, Wow i hope not. That could well be so GC dont get him at 24, i say he should be available at 29 and they are too keen on Ellis and Kersten and if they are available they shouldnt try anything silly.

Is there any noise that another club is even remotely interested in Bootsma? I haven't read anything about his skills and abilities that makes him likely to be a bolter at all. Sure there is talk that the Dockers want him, but most of it is linked to us asking about him as a F/S.

I think let him drift to the next selection if we actually want him. In reality he sounds like Rookie material.
