Appalling behaviour from Gayle. It is simply sexual harassment in the workplace and Mel McLaughlin was clearly uncomfortable no matter how professionally she handled it.

Seems Gayle has form off-field too.

It was not Gayle's first negative interaction with a female journalist - ESPNCricinfo writer Raf Nicholson wrote in 2014 that Gayle responded with a lewd remark to a female reporter who asked him about the pitch conditions before a day's play.

Canberra Times
journalist Fleta Page also tweeted that she had experienced Gayle's advances before an interview.
I was sent to interview Chris Gayle a couple of years ago. He said no to the interview before hitting on me. Dickhead is his default mode.

That is the worst comparison I have ever heard on any subject.

Possibly, but the massive over reaction to this is mind blowing.
All Gayle was trying do was have a little fun, which is what the BBL is about.

If he gets sanctioned over this today, I won't be going to the cricket tonight, or even the last game.

Good for you.

would it be ok for a male employee to make similar comments in the workplace? I dont think so

Imagine if a female BBL player made the same remarks? no body would even bat an eye lid.

In your imagination is the female BBL player in question making those remarks to Mel McLaughlin or to a male journo?

You know the answer is "it doesn't matter because it's inappropriate" right?

So let me get this straight... you're going to avoid going to the cricket if Gayle gets sanctioned for doing something that was clearly inappropriate?

*sigh* Going into a situation expecting to be judged on your sexual attractiveness and compatibility with a partner is significantly different from going into an interview expecting to have legitimate questions answered and instead being flirted with.

As I said, there's a time and a place for such things...and that was neither. If he legitimately wanted to ask her out, do it after the game off camera.

And not just "politically" correct either! I know what would happen to me if I tried that in my workplace........ It would be "Hasta lavista" comrade.

Could see the wheels turning over in her mind at the time - "will I tell this w***er to **** off, or do I just be a professional, and keep my job?"

She elected on the latter course of action. Came across as the winner hands down - good on her too. CG came across as the fool and a complete numpty.

Hopefully lesson learned by said self proclaimed gift to all women - now move on.

I hate it when people over react to things that don't have an adverse effect on me too!

Both, you know nobody would bat an eye lid to it. Right.
Would you argue that calling a white person a cracker is the same as calling a black person the N word?

No, because even though the actions are similar the context is not.

Ok... Gayle shouldn't have said what he did but who the hell cares?

What should have been an asinine comment but in typical media fashion makes a mountain out of a molehill, sure it was stupid but just leave it at that.

Just my opinion.

It would appear that a lot of people care.

You don't care that a person who is incredibly good at their job was reduced to nothing but her appearance by some ****ing tool being a jerk?

If there were any doubts about his intent or his attitude, the "don't blush baby" clears that up pretty quick.

Given that this isn't the first time from him, it's heading to nick kyrgios levels of dickheadedness.

The trouble with this attitude is it amounts to tacit approval of Gayle's comments. He should be called out on it and it should be done publicly so people realise it's not ok.

Imagine (seeing as that seems to be the theme of the defenders) if McLaughlin had replied 'At least you could see me blush. Stay cool n*****'. She would have been sacked on the spot and rightfully so.

Huge strides have been made with regard to shining the light of discrimination with regards to racism and stamping it out. As the thread title indicates this often starts with the small things. Sexism is discrimination and harassing comments like Gayle made are, to use a cricket pun, a power play. It's not acceptable and it is right to highlight this.

I agree, the day of the 'loveable larrakin' is past it's due date. Take note Sam, Aker, Tex.
