I think you're missing the point about people bringing up double standards.

You're missing the point that some double standards exist for good reasons, and only seem unfair when you deliberately and disingenuously remove thousands of years of social context from behind your comparisons.

Edit: that doesn't mean I like what Gayle did, I don't, I'm just dumbfounded when this happens in reverse and no one blinks.

Just fyi

Feminism is literally about fixing attitudes like the crowd's in this video/screencap.

Others are missing that point that the accept equality in it's truest form, requires a clean slate and a new start, leaving the past behind. Maybe society isn't ready for that.

More like it's just not the way things do, can or ever will work.

By exactly what process do you imagine this slate-wiping would happen?

I never said there wasn't a good reason for the double standard existing - I'm saying if we want equality we need to eliminate double standards. The two are bound together. It's idiotic to think otherwise.

Agreed. Feminism was originally about equal rights, not the men hating stereotype we now think of.
By definition, I think I'm a feminist...

I think a lot of the man-hating stuff is a test; it certainly works like one.

eg. its great for exposing guys who think that women should only have rights and respect when they are nice to men. The kind of guys that are usually also `I love women, my wife/daughter is one'.

Please show me the example of a woman sexually harassing many different men off and on camera, all the while not being encouraged by a single one of them?

Watch the Angels on one of the morning shows 7 or 9 I can't remember which, do it consistently. Every time they talk about men, imagine a group of men saying the exact same thing about women and them get back to me. The hypocrisy is immense.

I do remember a bit of controversy with the VC medal "winning" (I don't know if that is an appropriate word to describe a medal awarded for how good you are at war...) Soldier, forget his name, but he was being objectified by The Circle or whatever it was. It does sometimes swing both ways.

Yeah just flick on The Footy Show

OK... and what is the watershed event that is going to bring about equality, exactly? Everyone just agrees to pretend that none of history happened, and we start again?

That's pretty plausible.

Don't forget mother!

I don't know if you've watched it recently, but take away Sam and footy show would be incredibly bland and safe. To label the other people on there as anything else, is wide of the mark. Newman is the only one behaving in a risqué manner.

In that particular incident they insulted his intelligence because they saw a photo of him in the pool and he is a 2m staunch monster. I was please the public got involved. However, I'm not sure if it would have happened if he wasn't in the armed forces and a VC winner. Generally people Are very respectful of the defence forces....

Yeah no doubt having served in the army does grant one an extra shield from criticism or judgment, but in this case, what he done for the country as a soldier, considerably more than a sports person or reporter, the conversation should have never gone in that direction. It was truly a disgrace.

It's a touch more complex than that, something like taking an oath to move forward and break the shackles of the past.
Seriously though how is this idea grounded in reality even by 1%

Wow we need to get you guys involved in the Middle East peace talks and quickly.

It's not my best idea,
It's the only idea.
You can dislike it all you want but the only way to move forward truly is to treat each other equally. Saying it on the surface but holding onto it is why I was called sir by black people in the Deep South. Which freaked me the F$@k out btw.

In reality it will probably take a generation or two until we are no longer around to remember.

Because it's about you doing what is right, bugger what everyone else is doing. Call people out, male or female on sexism. Black, white , Asian , Indian about racism. It doesn't matter who is doing it, it matters that it's wrong and should be erased.

To quote Paul Kelly - "from little things, big things grow"

All people have to do is leave the past behind. It's that simple. I don't see what is so incomprehensible about it?

I guess so many are invested and rooted in the mistakes of the past.

Why would it take a generation or two? What you're talking about is a literal miracle, so you might as well claim it can be done with the snap of your fingers.

It's almost as if it's too simple...

I'm guess so many are invested and rooted in the mistakes of the past.

Yeah those experiencing chronic institutionalised oppression can be finicky little darlings sometimes.
