I don't think it's that. I genuinely think there's too much of a talent drain going on in the Australian media landscape that they're getting rapidly promoted for unearthing stories first instead of doing quality journalism, and it's promoting people above their abilities.

They're getting whatever the journalistic equivalent of a wartime promotion and then failing because they're not really officer material.

Where exactly is this "Talent" being drained too?
The mainstream media in Australia is made up of hacks who do little more than re-publish News releases or the edict of thr "publisher/owner.
If it were not for ABC journos there would bee almost no actual journalistic integrity in the entire county, and they are being gradually driven out and replaced by Murdoch lickspittle.
There is no drain on talent where there was little to begin with.

Away. To other industries, likely to need writing skills. Marketing departments, business. Some of the more affluent will start podcasts.

It's pretty well documented that journalism is a dying industry, as print shrinks, TV isn't watched and executives frantically look to cut costs and meet minimum demand whilst competing with the speed of new media.

If you want to be a serious journalist here, you need to leave the country; otherwise, your options are to rise through print journalism that isn't tainted by Murdoch - tricky to impossible - or you need to get a gig at the ABC, the Australian or Fairfax; and even then, you're subject to deadline pressure, financial problems and editorial direction from on high.

Excuse me, but there was plenty of talent within Australian media. Every now and then, something exceptional is released; the Christian Porter 4 corners; the journalists who broke water theft; the origin of the BRS allegations.

So, why isn't more coming through? Because there's no money in it; no real interest in research or investigative journalism; it's why groups like Independent Australia, FJ wind up doing the work of investigation and receive the leaks. These groups have small funding, reliant on patreon and donations for funding, and have essentially stepped in to do what the ABC can't anymore.

The less people within an industry, the worse performing that industry is; the less quality people in that industry, the less quality it produces; the less development of talent within an industry, the less people become both good and experienced.

Journalism has issues, but it's not a lack of talent but the direction that talent is pushed to follow, the speed with which people are promoted (frequently before they're ready) and the continuous deprecation of funds away from investigation, in pursuit of profit.
