What I like about the gather round is that it puts footy to the outback small clubs.
It would be amazing to have that down tassie

...within an hour of the main stadium. Im not even sure the AFL would want them to split between Hobart and Launceston (3 hours)

With all of these concerns about Mac Point not being 2028 ready, remember that, while Carrara Oval was being renovated, the SUNS played its "home" games at the GABBA.

And trained out of shipping containers!

OH SHIT!

Forgot about those.

Real portables at school like.

At least there's gonna be a training base this time around for the newbies.

Don't forget Mac Point wa an abattoir, railway yards and a container terminal. At one stage had the second biggest railway roundhouse in the southern hemisphere:

This is not green bushland.

It is similar to where Marvel stadium is (on a smaller scale)

Old railway yards/sheds and largely empty, but adjacent to the water.

Don't forget the RSL were prepared to drop all their objections for a sling. That's how real their objections are/were.

"So we would expect to hopefully have everything in place to start(construction) around May 2027,"

Could you explain why the RSL was so opposed to it for those unfamiliar with the situation?

It was never going to make 2028... 2029 was ambitious, 2030 is most realistic timeline allowing for the inevitable "things that go wrong". I am pretty relaxed about - most important thing is to get it right rather than get it quick given that UTAS will be OK and Bellerive is temporary.
It does not matter that much to start with, more games at UTAS in first couple of seasons maybe and just have to put up with Bellerive for a bit.

Watching it on TV, Bellerive looks more aesthetically pleasing.

But, yep.
There's no rush to this.

No need to be within an hour, Launceston will be great for 3 games in a gather round.

Look at Adelaide - both Mt Barker and Nuri are within an hour - people have to travel out of the city to matches and back. Thats not possible with this split - but then the AFL might be content for that anyway as its not really doing doouble headers so much

I know many believe cost blow outs are all most certain although I still think it's a fair chance it could be kept on budget. The building contract is what's called a p190 and that means it is 90% likely to come in on budget. They also have commites set up to monitor costs and processes set up to keep it on budget. The government is clearly under huge pressure to deliver on budget, so I think people may be surprised how close it comes in on budget. They have also said that if the costs look like going over they will build it down to cost. I honestly don't see when you consider all this that this build will blow out a lot.

We could always move the cricket to UTAS, and local footy to other grounds.
Bellerive land values (with a view of the Derwent) would be higher than UTAS.
Im all for selling it off, you instantly save money in upkeep, then put the sales money into health/education and to a slush fund for any extra stadium costs so as not to draw the ire of locals.
Can't see them moving the games to Launceston as crickets new performance centre is being built down near the airport. It would be a bit silly to have the home team needing to sleep in hotels for a 4 day shield match on their home turf. It would be a turn off to players.

It's more likely that they develop the new HPC with limited seating options to host the shield there like Junction Oval in Melbourne and Cricket Central in Sydney.
