Name the players that you always think of when assessing a player from your team, and why...

An example... Ryan Burton is linked in my mind with.....
- Doedee.... (Crows chose him over Burton in the draft)
- Jed Anderson.... (North swapped picks that the Hawks used on Burton)
- Andy McGrath.... the Rising Star battle

Tonight, it was Petraca and McCartin

That is so absolutely not what star crossed means...

You could be right... Wikipedia says....

"star crossed... also refers to destiny and the inevitability of the two characters' paths crossing. It usually but not always refers to unlucky outcomes, since Romeo and Juliet's affair ended tragically"

Perhaps this is what you mean by "absolute" misuse... that you don't prefer this definition/usage found on Wikipedia.

:D

Fantastic selective quoting!

Your snippet says "the characters", as in Romeo and Juliet, or other lovers, in the context of the actual definition, that bring found in the full entry as per below.

It might refer to some players, of course, not that there's anything wrong with that :D

The broadest possible definition you could use is simply thwarted by bad luck, so maybe Scotty Gumbleton was star crossed; but a crossing of star players is surely mangling it beyond all recognition hahaha

"Star-crossed" or "star-crossed lovers" is a phrase describing a pair of lovers whose relationship is often thwarted by outside forces. The term encompasses other meanings, but originally means the pairing is being "thwarted by a malign star" or that the stars are working against the relationship.[1] Astrological in origin, the phrase stems from the belief that the positions of the stars ruled over people's fates, and is best known from the play Romeo and Julietby the Elizabethan playwright William Shakespeare. Such pairings are often said to be doomed from the start.

The phrase was coined in the prologue of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet:

From forth the fatal loins of these two foes,
A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life (5–6).[2]

It also refers to destiny and the inevitability of the two characters' paths crossing. It usually but not always refers to unlucky outcomes, since Romeo and Juliet's affair ended tragically. Further, it connotes that the lovers entered into their union without sufficient forethought or preparation; that the lovers may not have had adequate knowledge of each other or that they were not thinking rationally.[1]

Just on Burton and McGrath

The two standouts from last years Rising Star - McGrath narrowly got the nod that caused some debate at the time (and still does)

Early days into this season but i havent seen anything from Burton this year that puts him ahead. In fact gap may have increased in Mcgraths favour

Burton is going through a slight dip in form as I’m sure McGrath will at some time. Both young excellent players and I doubt either team would swap what them

Burtons been shocking, should of rested the ankle after round 1. Now he has no confidence and his movements still not right. McGrath not exactly setting the world on fire either. Guys like parfitt, Taranto and Fisher have started the year a lot better

Eh? McGrath has been good this year

Going in pretty early on some of these. I remember Rioli and Palmer was a massive debate, everyone forgot after a short while. At least compared to Buddy v Tambling which will always be hilarious considering the gloating of Terry Wallace.

WAY WAY AHEAD. In fact Doedee looks like the better player this year.

Mate, are you the same person who taught Damien Barrett what a 'Sliding Doors' moment is?

You didnt watch the game on ANZAC Day I guess. About the only touch McGrath had was throwing the ball back short and giving away a 50m penalty taking the Collingwood player to the goal line.

In a game where Essendon had 400 possessions kicking back and forth across the defensive 50 and going nowhere, he still only managed 10 possessions.

Both of them havent been particularly good this year. But it is still early. And they are now expected to play as well as anyone in the team, rather than play as well as any of the newer guys.
