Coaching panel
Not so sure that there's anything wrong with Spike or Mathews. The new development coach who knows. Probably lacks authority. Buchanon not so sure. Definitely at least one short. Spike should be a decent senior assistant. McPointy seems to be struggling with the VFL side but I felt it was the right move at the time. 🤷

Taking a dig through some historical data.

Where this team has really lost its identity is throughout the variance iterations of Swans teams over the past 2 decades. We've always had a defence that was ranging from Solid to Elite. Even in years where we couldn't make finals, our defence tends to hold up. We just can't kick a winning score.

In 2025, on current trajectory our offence has fallen to 2019 levels and the defence is on track to being the worst it's been.

Priority number 1 has to be figuring out how to stop oppo from scoring so easily. Building a reliable back 6/7 at draft/trade time.

This article on goal kicking accuracy has us 5th worst in overall accuracy (not surprising) but 2nd best from set shots (surprising). Which must mean our non set shots are deplorable

Wish they had added xG in there to give some context whether we are taking bad shots in general or missing the kickable ones

I really love the look of that CBA chart.

The more Errol and Chad don’t have to attend & instead act as runners, the better we look in my view.
With Sheldrick establishing his spot in the team & Mills and Papley back we have a very long list of players who can rotate through there now which is a huge asset.

Thinking about the first 2 items, so we can move the ball to F50 almost as good as any in the comp, but that last kick inside F50 we are almost as bad as any in the comp.

I also remember reading a stat saying we are one of the best in slowing opposition ball movement from their defensive half into our D50, but once it gets in there we are one of the leakiest sides in conceding scores per I50 conceded.

In other words, between the arcs we are strong, but the bookends at both ends are weak.

I think that sounds pretty reasonable, particularly the conversion issue, with the makeshift forward line we have had all season.

Thanks for this Grim. I think we can all see our weaknesses, especially up forward, but it sure does help getting some clarity on it to confirm we're not just imagining things with our own bias.

Club have been desperate for a leading forward since before Buddy retired to replace him and we have had no luck. Our forward 50 entries aren't making it any easier for the ones we have.

Defence has been vulnerable in particular due to our injuries but again its a weakness need to improve on.

Not disputing your info acquirement Grim, really appreciate you finding & sharing it all, but this just cannot be right. I'd go so far as to say our biggest weakness as a team, to my eye, is allowing the opposition to go end-to-end virtually uncontested. We don't look like we can defend ball movement at all. It happens soooo much that I just can't believe that most teams in the competition are actually worse at it than us.
