You can tell how open the Hawks like it when you look at their contested marks, uncontested marks + possesions.

I'd say if it's going to be wet our superior tackling and contested possession advantages could be very handy. Not to mention it will reduce the uncontested advantage the Hawks seem to have. Sorry to those of you who have to sit out in the thick of it but I hope it buckets down....

Important points to note

• Swans still sticking to their contested and direct style of footy (1st in CP, 3rd in CP% and dead last by a long way in uncontested marks) but the Saints are the complete opposite (2nd in UP and last in CP % and 1st in disposal efficiency).
• Despite our inability to mark the ball inside 50 (11th vs St Kilda's 3rd) we are much more efficient in converting our inside 50s into goals (3rd vs St Kilda's 14th), mainly thanks to our amazing goalkicking accuracy (1st v St Kilda's 11th) and goal assists tally (1st v 6th).
• We may have the most clearances in the league but we've also conceded the most clearances and more tellingly haven't had a positive clearance differential yet. This highlights the common misconception that we are a great clearance side. We are not, we just force a lot of ruck contests with our style of play.

That difference in contested and uncontested possessions between the two sides is telling, isn't it? Even though it's very early in the season, worth noting that both sides have already played Gold Coast and GWS in the first four rounds.

It's not as meaningful to compare teams based on stats after only 2-3 rounds, by round 4, you at least have some idea how teams are going...

I was joking because I was unaware that you couldn't just click on the champion data stats that are printed for every game in the herald sun the next day, I messed around with google and couldn't do it myself. Sorry about that you were being serious. If I knew how to send them to you the next morning I would as I always have the paper by 7am. I could always cut it out and post but it would be better if you got them sooner. Malfan has a great idea surely someone from Melbourne could scan them to you?

So we can see that Brisbane are atrocious in putting points on the board. Last in goals, goalkicking accuracy, disposals / goal even though they are relatively high in inside 50s and marks inside 50.

That's a really interesting list. 6 of the top 8 on the ladder are in the bottom half for clearance differential.

Hmm, I wonder if it says something about how these teams are setting up at the clearances. Perhaps it could be part of a deliberate strategy, where sides are willing to concede the clearance but work harder to defend the next kick. Interesting though!

EDIT: Doesn't explain Melbourne's differential though, that probably just means they're bad

Fun facts for today:

Luke Parker is 6th in the AFL for clangers

Nick Malceski leads the AFL in rebound 50s (13 ahead of the next highest). Perhaps why we struggled so badly when he was smothered by Hawthorn's tag, expect other teams to do the same.

Josh Kennedy is top 2 in clearances for the 3rd year running. Quite remarkable, he just doesn't get enough support (notable exception being O'Keefe)

Everyone already knows superstar Mike Pyke is 1st in the league for contested marks, he's also 5th for hitouts
