Emphasises McVeigh's proficiency by foot that he is nowhere to be seen despite getting as much of the ball out of the back line as Malceski does. His skills are just impeccable.
McVeigh is indeed ranked a lowly hundred-and-something for clangers even though he is #4 for disposals in the league.

Malceski - 3rd
Hannebery - 8th
Kennedy - 17th
Parker and O'Keefe - equal 20th

Clangers just means ineffective disposals? Not surprised our mids are in there if that's the case. Shovelling handballs out aren't the most effective way to do it, and we all love ROK's roosts out of the middle.

Mal is the standout surprise for me, but probably because he tries to be too cute sometimes. And with the volume of kicks he gets, some are bound to the be clangers.

Said it elsewhere, but I won't be able to understand it at all if Malceski gets an AA spot over McVeigh on a back flank. Mal doesn't not deserve it but McVeigh's first 6 weeks on a forward flank plus his last 14 rounds on a back flank have to get him a starting spot.

Clangers are turnovers, out on the fulls etc. Ineffective disposals are usually short disposals not to a teammate, <40m to a contest if I remember correctly.

For example Malceski's breakdown is 73% effective, 15% clangers, 12% ineffective.
McVeigh's breakdown is 75% effective, 8% clangers, 17% ineffective

Clangers are:
- disposal that goes directly to an opposition player
- free kick against and also 50m penalties (separately counted)
- dropped marks under no pressure
- screwing up the kick in by overstepping the line.

Just saw this posted on Facebook by Champion Data

Average metres gained per disposal (100+ total disposals):
30.6m - L.Jetta (Syd)
26.7m - N.Malceski (Syd)

25.6m - S.Hurn (WCE)
25.4m - M.Maguire (BL)

24.5m - L.Thomas (NM)
24.4m - M.White (Rich)

Game v Geelong

Season best
  • Hitouts against 24 (previous best 29 v RIC)
  • Stoppages against 15 (previous best 18 v GWS)
Season worst
  • Disposals against 433 (previous worst 410 v ADE)
  • Uncontested possessions against 283 (previous worst 258 v RIC)
  • Centre clearances 6 (previous worst 7 v FRE and CAR)
  • Inside 50s 37 (previous worst 38 v COL)

The tackle differential (as opposed to the raw tackle counts) probably would have been up there with the season worsts as well, I think it ended up something like -30, and Geelong had so much more of the ball!

Hawks leading the comp in one percenters, led by Gibson with 172 (presume most of those would be spoils). We will get slaughtered in the rebound 50s if we bomb it in long all the time (I keep thinking back to that 2011 semi-final when we constantly kicked it to Gibson), but having said that we could still stretch their defence with our tall forward line, Tippett (2.0), Pyke (2.2) and White (1.6) are averaging more contested marks than Franklin (1.4), Hale (1.2) and Roughead (1.2).

That final gives me nightmares, he spoiled everything

I have a question for the fine football minds on this forum (and anyone else who is interested). I have noticed that a few on the board have criticised Champion Data's stats in the past as only the club knows what our true performance indicators are. Obviously, that is the club's intellectual property and I certainly don't think they should be giving that information out, but how much attention do you pay to the official published stats?

Personally, I don't read the stats in isolation but I tend to look for trends. For example, if a player is routinely getting very low disposal efficiency, or the team is getting smashed in contested possessions every week. They can tell you if a player is having a blinder or a shocker, but apart from that they may not mean that much unless they are read in the context of a game.

Some of the stats are very misleading, the worst being disposal efficiency. It is utterly atrocious, and the way they measure it results in backline ball butcherers like Heath Clanger having better DE% than star users like Ablett and Cotchin. It rewards long kicks to a contest, and short kicks to unmanned opponents.

As to your point about trusting the club's indicators - why? Longmire stated that his key indicator is contested ball, which we have done well in while getting smashed in games - such as the Hawthorn final. Time for a better indicator Johnny.

Clearances are another one that can be misleading as sometimes they don't tell you the result of the next kick or handpass after winning the clearance.

Re the club's indicators not being perfect, that is a very good point. I think contested possessions are still an important one because they measure effort and we have been a side that relies on everyone giving maximum effort to win. Whatever the indicator is it needs to be clear and simple enough for the players to follow on a footy field during a high pressure game.

Some of those rankings for the Suns are incredible for a team that's currently sitting 7-3.

Not really, just a reflection of their draw so far.

That's exactly my point, despite their favorable draw, they are still 15th in kicks and LAST in uncontested possessions, marks and clangers!

SYDNEY SWANS

THE GOOD

Take out the opening four weeks of the season and the Swans have been the best team in the competition. They play the game in their half of the ground. Offensively they are the third most efficient team in the competition and defensively they absorb momentum the second best in the competition. They are 8-0 in that time and have a percentage of 167 – 30% better than the next ranked team. Except for last week against Port Adelaide, they have been absolutely dominant at ground level winning 136 more groundball-gets than the opposition – a differential 79 better than any other team.

THE BAD

The midfielders are masking the problem with their ground level dominance, but since Round 5 they have won 72 fewer gathers from teammate hitouts than their opposition – a differential 49 worse than any other team in the competition.

GAME STYLE

As per usual they create a lot of stoppages and make the opposition win the footy in a contested manner. They use hands in tight, in particular behind centre, then when it is time to kick they go direct kicking long the second most often and forward the fourth most.

THE IMPROVER

Playing more midfield and as a tagger, Ben McGlynn has had an outstanding season averaging career-highs in disposals, contested possessions, clearances and tackles. Under the Champion Data pressure points system, McGlynn is the clear leader of the competition. He is only player to average double figure physical pressure acts.

Those first 3 losses hurt when you look at how good we have been since! Those Derrickx bashers may have something to it, but I still like his effort :p

This week we had no one with 30+ touches I think that's the first time in a very long time our highest was Malceski with 26, in fact we had only 5 players with over 20. Richmond had 4 with 30+... Richmond 400 disposals Swans 330
