Crows: Converting pressure into points
The Crows are elite in the defensive side of the game, particularly in causing turnovers and converting those turnovers into goals. They rank 3rd in tackles, 2nd in pressure acts, 2nd in turnovers caused and 1st for goals resulting from turnovers caused. Combined with a raucous full house expected at Adelaide Oval, the Swans will need to be ready for their onslaught.

Swans: Emasculating teams all over the ground
Contrary to what some media pundits have been spouting in recent weeks, the Swans have conceded the least inside 50s in the comp. This is a stark contrast to the trend in the Longmire era, particularly in 2012, when the Swans would employ the "rope-a-dope" strategy of conceding many inside 50s, backing their defenders to win the defensive contests and hitting the teams on the transition.

The Swans now don't give an inch all over the ground. In addition to the lowest inside 50s conceded, the Swans also rank top in marks inside 50 conceded, metres conceded and 3rd highest in disposals conceded

Carlton's unique game style

1st in kicks, 18th in handballs, it's no surprise that Carlton leads the league in the kick-to-handball ratio stat, miles clear of second placed Port Adelaide.

Carlton's main struggles lie in the offensive end. Coach Bolton has been very public about his aim to improve the Blues' defensive game first (however stats show they are still below average on the defensive end) before aiming to expand the Blues's offensive capabilities in the years to come. 2nd last in inside 50s, 2nd last in goals and 5th last in marks inside 50, where the Blues really struggle is in converting turnovers to goals. Despite causing their opposition the 3rd most turnovers in the league, they rank 2nd last in goals resulting from a turnover.

In a nutshell, Carlton are still shit & apart from all the fluffy love that goes with a coach from the Hawthorn school of coaching, this mob are once again challenging for a wooden spoon, on the back of totally depending on older players such as Simpson, Murphy, Gibbs (who wants out), Kreuzer.
Once they finally get rolling in two years, these guys that are keeping them 'together' in games, will be gone.
So much hype from the Vic media when they should be under more pressure than the Pies.

The nothing achievers, even though they are the beneficiaries of the go home factor from GWS.

Sorry folks, I judge this rabble hard & the same goes with the Magpies as they seem to be the clubs in Victoria that players from interstate want to go to, making their recruiting staff the laziest & most unnecessarily overpaid in the land.

You may have seen and heard this week, on TV, radio and print media, that Essendon have a chance of beating the Swans. The following numbers were probably used as the basis for this viewpoint.

All stats from the last 8 rounds of the season
The Swans as we all know finished the season with a 14-2 record, with the 2 losses coming against the Hawks. The key to their success, especially in the first meeting, was the Hawks's control of the ball with their game plan based around keeping the ball, having plenty of uncontested possessions and marks.

Well Essendon have racked up some pretty impressive uncontested numbers in the past 8 weeks. They rank 2nd in uncontested possessions, 2nd in uncontested marks (no prizes guessing who ranks 1st) and are 1st in disposals overall.

Over the past 8 weeks, the Swans have kicked the most goals (126) and Essendon the 2nd most (119). However while Essendon's goals have resulted from a large number of forward 50 entries (1st), the Swans are only ranked 9th in this category but have been the best team in converting their opportunities, scoring a goal from 29.58% of inside 50 entries compared to Essendon's 26.10% (ranked 5th)

While the attacks of both sides are similarly potent, on the defensive end the Swans have the clear advantage. The Swans have been extremely miserly in the number of goals conceded, not only ranking 1st in the AFL but have almost conceded 2 goals less per game than the next best side Port Adelaide.

It's a similar story in the goals conceded per inside 50 conceded category where the Swans are clear #1 while the Bombers are below the AFL average.

Get the ball first. We're better on the inside, and just don't let go. We're playing pretty direct these days as well, we just need to make sure we're smart on our inside 50s.

Surely if the Bombers play an uncontested brand of footy that limits their ability to use their speed?

Despite what the stats suggest I don't believe Essendon are as good as Hawthorn at that style of play and if they try it I reckon they'll fail miserably.

If they play with speed, as expected, they are prone to taking risks and turning the ball over which we feast on.

Despite losing to the Hawks via uncontested footy I don't believe that's where we fall down nor is it where the Dons will get us. The Hawks defend very high up the ground and we struggled to get out of their 50. We defend very deep, we'll concede a lot of possessions against even the worst of teams but turnovers in our 50 are what kill us.
 
Here is how I see it based on Grim's stats of the last 8 weeks.
Essendon have only played 1 top 8 team in those games, against Adelaide at Etihad & had 20 scoring shots to Adelaide's 35. They should have been totally demolished. Prior to these games they were beaten by the wooden spooner in Brisbane.

That table for uncontested footy is headed by many teams who finished outside the 8.

I think that if we just play true to form & if it was a H & A game for percentage, we would win this by 50 points plus pulling away but because it is a final, we may go into self preservation/defensive mode in the last. This game should be decided by 3/4 time.

Along with that, Buddy is rendered useless up against his old team for some unknown reason. We lose by a kick each time with some arsey long range goals in both games & without Lloyd for both & Reid for nearly both.
He loves playing against Essendon. The drug cheats have no hope other than a false one provided to them by MR Outside Uncontested Beast, Brendon Goddard himself.
For Christ sake they shouldn't even be in the 8 & it is only because of the charity draw they have been dealt by the AFL.

Yes, Grim. But we're freaking awesome. So Kryptonite merely brings us back to the field and leaves us vulnerable to a small margin win/defeat to our opponents. ;)

ps: Heard Luke Parker on the radio today. Outside run and uncontested play are absolutely a focus for our club. It's a thing!
 
It's funny I think the biggest mistake we make against the Hawks and their gamestyle is that we get so caught up in how to stop them and in the process we forget how much we can do as a side (we are ****ing lethal when on) and that's the mindset we have to take in against the Bombers. Don't fear what they bring but make them fear about what we bring.
